Well, for one thing you can easily request that no MSG be used.  Secondly, the quality of Chinese food varies wildly.  Many US Chinese take out places are of the most wretched standards, and it's no wonder that it causes spontaneous explosive diarrhea of the worst kind.  However, if you can locate a really good Chinese restaurant -- as in one where actual Chinese people will eat, then I personally never have a bad experience.

What exactly are you ordering anyway?

It's usually the rice that makes a person sick. They usually pre-cook it, and if it's not re-heated properly, there may be trouble ahead....

Really?  Well, that's easily solved then.  How hard is it to cook your own rice at home.

I'm craving Chinese food now, and really miss the place in NYC I used to go for crab meat soup dumplings.  All of the Chinese places close to where I live here in Philadelphia are what I call "Ghetto Chinese" because you order your food through bullet proof glass.  Horribly glamorous.

I worked in a supposedly "high end" Asian restaurant for a number of years and its appalling at the amount of MSG used in a single dish.  Ask your server to have the chef leave the MSG out, though honestly a lot of times it still finds its way in.  Many places will even say they don't use MSG at all, even though they'll go through buckets a night, for fear of losing customers.  I would say that if you think it's the MSG making you feel ill, avoid dishes that are wok fried, pan seared, etc. where there is the potential for MSG use and try and stick to things like salads, certain soups and sushi (if your health allows), though the best way to enjoy healthy Asian cuisine is just to make yourself at home.  Just my two cents.

Well the chinese food we eat in the good ole USA has very little in common with real chinese food... Why not look up recipes online for chinese dishes... its very easy to make and if your worried about MSG... you'd be suprised to whats in canned food, heat and eat food, your ketchup, sauses etc... almost anything pre-prepared has MSG in it unless otherwise noted on the label... Anns right its probally the rice not being properly reheated... I eat my own cooking an I sometimes add MSG too it but, very little... I have a friend who swears they know when MSG is added to their food... LOL theyve eaten plenty from my house and never knew it at all... I guess I'm the MSG smuggler aliitle wont hurt!

Here on the Russian River, chain stores are not allowed.  We have 1 Safeway Market and 1 Union 76 gas station.  The local Starbucks got past the ordinance and was allowed to open only because they are located inside the Safeway store.  Otherwise, they couldn't be there and the local rarely buy their products.  For any business to survive even one Winter Off Season, they better be good.

There is a family who owns a Chinese restaurant in Forestville.  I go there because the food is always quite good and their Lemon Chicken compares with that of the Chen family in Long Beach.  Mae Chen was 85 years old, ran her restaurant at night, a self-help group for women in the day and at 85 has bungie jumped off the bow of the Queen Mary.  I hear Chinese food is the healthiest food in the world.

If my doctor is correct and I do live to see  my 85th BD, I'm going to Chens and then bungie jumping  ;D  Have the best day

About alll I can tell you is that some people can have very serious problems with MSG's. The Chinese restaurant that Ed and I go to, advertise they are MSG free. Just wondering, you don't have asthma do you?

What a load of racist tripe!  Snopes has a good redux of the various forms of this fiction:

http://www.snopes.com/horrors/food/chinese.asp

My only complaints about my favorite Chinese carryout hole-in-the-wall near home are that they don't the orange beef hot enough for me--even when I say "Asian VERY spicy, not American spicy"--and that it's hot as hell in the customer area regardless of the time of year.

When it comes to sensitivities to Chinese food, in particular, it's almost always due to a problem with glutamates, specifically the MSG added as a flavor enhancer to many spices produced overseas.  People taking Dilantin/phenytoin should demand MSG-free food to avoid the risk impacting drug levels and inducing seizure or aura.

Best,
David

I LOVE spicy food too.  Another reason I like cooking at home.  No place ever seems to get it quite hot enough.

I haven't gotten sick from Chinese food.  Thinking back, I don't recall that I've ever been sick from eating anything.  I may have AIDS, but at least I can eat most foods, seasonings, etc!   ;)

Not so sure about that General Tso sandwich, but General Tso Chicken or Combo 11 is my favorite and actually the only thing I order from the Double Dragon which is my favorite and  the only place I eat Chinese food from.  I have their number on my speed dial!!  Not too worried about the rice since the only thing I like is that spicy deep fried sauce covered chicken.  Hopefully it will never make me sick!!

I have not gotten sick from eating Chinese food for the past 20 years.  There is a place about 12 blocks from my house that I have gone to for the last 7 years.  They too serve customers from behind a 6 inch plexiglass protector but the food is delicious and they don't use MSG. The place looks spotless. I also see the staff there eat the same food they prepare for the customers.  I am assuming that remains a good sign since I see the same people all the time.

In a certain Chicago neighborhood north of downtown there are a few vietnamese family-owned restaurants in the neighbor. Residents complained their off leash dogs quickly went missing and could never be located at the dog pound.

What a tired way to exploit cultural differences. So what, they eat dog, big deal. I'm sure some Chinese blogger is posting right at this very minute some of the weird cuisine of Americans.

The silly Vietnamese Restaurant rumor of throwing your pet Pomeranian in a pot is not confined to Chicago. Cmon now.

Amen!  Observant Muslims and Jews eet neither pork, nor shellfish;  and plenty of the world's people do not eat meat at all.  They must really roll their eyes over our diverse animal protein consumption.  Urban myths like the ones quoted here are designed to highlight non-existent cultural differences to the end of continuing bigotry and strife.

So true. You can never find "orange chicken" "brocclie beef" or even "fortune cookie" anywhere in China. But they do use a lot of MSG. My dad uses it on every dish so I must have gotten used to it. I am just back from a China trip and I gained 10 pounds in 2 weeks. I stay away from dog and donkey, even chicken feet.

Yum yum! Chicken feet...

Oh they look GOOD! Duck testicles.. or whatever, I mean I didn't even know ducks have balls. ;D

My favorite Taiwanese dish is however pig testicles soup.

You first boil some water, then add the same quantity of traditional Chinese rice wine and black pepper, and some herbs. Then you add the, er, "balls" and let them boil some more. Before serving you can add some vegetables like water spinach in the soup.

Super tasty!

I didn't know too much about MSG so I googled it. I've heard stories about it making people ill and usually every time I hear MSG mentioned its in a negative way.
I don't get sick when I eat Chinese food so I assume I don't have a problem with it.

The Chinese food place I used to go to closed down and I haven't found a suitable replacement yet.
I prefer to go to hole in the wall mom and pop places that have actual Asian people as the owners and workers. And I don't like places that use that grey chewy chicken. I want my chicken white my veggies crisp and my rice steamed.

I could happily eat Chinese food every day for the rest of my life. Unfortunately my honey doesn't care for Chinese food and only eats the fried and crappy things on the menu.
However if I have the notion that if I where to cook the same things at home and place the ingredients in separate bowls he'd likely never complain.

Oh boy, chicken, mushrooms, onions, cabbage, broccoli, carrots, snow peas, rice and more.

hullo everyone !,
I love Chinese food , and actually here in southern Missouri there is quite a few good ones .
In poplar Bluff there is a Mongolian restaurant , it it wonderful ! does a great business and the food is good !
The other few in town seem to keep food until it is Bond it's natural life expectancy !
other towns around the Ozarks have great food too !
real  Chinese people running them . If I go in and see no Chinese people ,I start to wonder ...............................
then wander OUT !

I remember there was a fab-U-lous restaurant on the Las Vegas strip , just north of Sahara Hotel , a little hole in the wall
connected to a dive Motel . We went there for years ! , until the day I found out that they REUSED THE FOOD THAT WAS NOT EATEN !
EL PUKE A RUINY !
I told everyone I worked with and all my Friends and relatives about it !
I remember my Aunt Rose asking did you see what I just saw ?
the bus boy handed the rice bowl back to the kitchen crew ,through the serving window , then moved on to the scullery with the
food that was to far gone ..................................................
******************************************
Back to the topic !
For the first year and a half after starting meds , my doctors at the V.A. warned me of eating ant fresh fruits or veggies !
like a fool I listended to them !
I now eat all the fresh food I can , and it really has helped with getting back on track !
I found out if you do not eat good food , I cook mostly at home , I am a fine Gomey cook !         LOL
I do NOT like to eat out because you just do not know how clean they are .
We have a commercial dishwasher ,oh heavens the three gallon of wash sanitiser and rinse agent costs almost  50 Bucks !
but our dishes are clean , Even thou  my in-laws Will not eat out of anything but paper plates ,and they bring there own food .

eat at restaurants that have clean bathrooms , and a good flow of people !

My favorite story about Chinese restaurant is this:

Some years ago I went camping/hiking with some friends in Joshua Tree National Park. We somehow missed a turn on the way back so by the time we got back to our car it was like 5pm already, so we knew we could not make it back to LA on time for dinner. I drove the first two hours and my ex took over. There were another straight couple friends with us. So 3 hours into our way back home we decided to stop for foods, so the plan was to just make a turn at the next opportunity and look for foods - Micky D, Wendy's, whatever.

But we somehow ended up in a small town. We drove around a bit looking for places to eat that were still open. Since I was the only person willing to drive after a long hike since 6 in the morning they all said I should decide - I said "Chinese, must eat Chinese foods". Everyone rolled their eyes, "no, you spoiled brat you can't possible find Chinese foods here!"

And then we turned into a road next to a car park, with a big neon sign that said, yes, "Chinese Restaurant". Not "Wang Restaurant", not "Guo Chicken", not "Yau Kee", just "Chinese Restaurant". My friends had no choice but to go, with me leading. There was only one other table occupied - no kidding, a whole family of cowboys. I still remember, an elderly man of about 50 with his (very likely) two sons in their early 20s. All very Brokeback.

The cook was a Mexican! And I had the worst fired rice ever in my life, while our next table dining fellows were obviously thinking it was a nice treat. Too bad none of us took notice of where we were...

Well at least you won't get fed horse meat in the US unless you eat dog or cat food. Instead of processing horse meat here in the US they now just send the whole horse over to France and other parts of Europe where they process it.

Nice read, Kimonos. What a neat turn of events. Your friends must have themselves a nice chuckle when they recall that one.
I especially love Chinese Hunan and Sheshuan cuisines. Yum! Love Mexican food too. A Mexican cooking my Chinese food ain't gonna bother me one bit.
As sidenote, there's a Korean studmuffin at the local buffet restaurant that looks very yummy too.  :P
I recently noticed a Chinese recipe for bear paws. In truth, we humans eat every warm blooded or cold blooded critters in existence. Even a critter with poison in it's system is not safe from our quests to consume.

I'm one who has problems with MSG's. I ALWAYS get these "special" headache's. Not like any other headache, so I know its from MSG treated food.
I tried one of Marie Callender's frozen dinners at work a while back, and a few hours later got the "special" headache.
I looked on the box label and sure enough, MSG listed on the label.
I really need to read these labels before eating, but assume it wont be there (MSG's).

There was a place in San Diego back in the 1980's called SOUP KITCHEN that had the biggest salad bar known to man (or woman).
They poured MSG's on their stuff to keep it fresh. I only ate there once, got the headache of death, and never returned. They close up a year later.

I remember back in the 1970's ( I may have posted this before), where they had on tv a test showing an apple split in half. One side was sprayed with MSG and the other half left alone.
In short, after 3 days the MSG treated half still looked the same. The untreated half looked like a brown shrunken head.
Nasty stuff!!!

My favorites too, and they actually burn the fat so people who eat these hot and spicy food don't get fat. Too bad I have to get over my hemoroid right now so I can't eat spicy, maybe that's why I got fat? Man I miss sichuan hot pot...

I especially love Chinese Hunan and Sheshuan cuisines. Yum!

MSG makes me feel sleepy. Plus no matter how much chinese food you eat at restaurant, if the MSG is present you'll be hungry in an hour :) well...unless you're sleeping of course :)

I was in a small hotel on the Mekong in Thailand and they had a sign
'we don't use MSG in our food'. I didn't have a clue what it was and asked the
manager 'what is MSG?' Lo and behold he asked me to follow him to the kitchen where they had a jar with the white powder 'that's MSG'  :-\
So since then I'm wary of signs saying 'no MSG' though I love Chinese food,.
