I am writing this to you, almost in tears.  The fact that I am writing this at all, on this forum, makes me so sad.
I have had a possible encounter with HIV.  I had sex with a man twice now (two separate events) without a condom.  I have a reliable source that has told me that he has been with over 200 women (he is like your 21st century playboy.) And too, his last girlfriend was a stripper.  I tested negative for herpes, ghonoria (sp?) and chlamydia.  It has been exactly 8 weeks since our last encounter.  Can I go get tested for HIV?  Or would be just be a waste of time (being too early?)

miss,

Any time you have unprotected intercourse, no matter what you think you know about his sexual history, you put yourself at risk for hiv infection.

You need to test. The vast majority of people who have actually been infected will seroconvert and test positive by six weeks, with the average time to seroconversion being 22 days. However, a six week test MUST be confirmed at three months.

What this means where you're concerned is that yes, you can test now. If you've been infected, you'll likely test positive. If your result comes back negative, you need to confirm that at three months, but the result is unlikely to be different.

You need to make sure your partner is wearing a condom in future. You're risking your health to do otherwise.

HIV is certainly character-building. It's made me see all of the shallow things we cling to, like ego and vanity. Of course, I'd rather have a few more T-cells and a little less character. Randy Shilts
