Getting tested tomorrow -worriec
« on: March 22, 2012, 11:03:02 pm »
Hello,
I know lots of people on here are having a hard time and are worried and I feel for you.
I had been dating a man (I am a women) on and off for about 6 months.
In that six months we had protected sex about three times
We went out about a month ago for drinks and went back to his place..we were messing around and he ask if he could go inside of me without a condom, in the heat of the moment I said yes.., it lasted for about two minutes before I told him we needed protection and that it was a bad idea.
Last week I got a boil on my eye that made a lymph node in my eye swell up, I went to the Doctor and she said I had a fever. The fever got worse, I had pain behind my eyes, cold chills, body aches and I would wake up soaked. I have unpainful lymph nodes swollen in my groin.
Im terrified. I've tried to be so careful and I can't believe I've made this mistake. I'm hoping it's not related and I'm fine but the timeline scares me.
He went for a blood test at his doctors after I told him I got sick but he won't get the results back until next week. He also swears he's clean but after getting sick I'm too scared.

Ok first things first. Please don't use the term "clean" to refer to a person's HIV status. It's very offensive. It suggests that those of us who have HIV are "dirty". I am HIV positive and I take exception to that characterisation.

You do need to be tested for HIV but I don't think you are likely to test positive as a result of this sexual encounter. HIV is a fragile virus and is not easily transmitted.

But you need to be tested. 3 months from the date of risk behaviour. You should also be tested for other STI's such as gonorrhoea and chlamydia as these are more common and more transmissible than HIV. Ask your doctor to perform a full sexual health screen.

Your current illness is not HIV related. Fevers, chills and swollen nodes are not limited to HIV.

Hello MtD,
Thank you for responding. I am so sorry if I offended you or anyone else by my poor choice in words. I had never thought of it that way and you correct. I should have said that he claimed to not have any STD's.
It wasn't my intent to offend anyone.
Your response has made me feel a lot better.
I did get tested for everything including HIV when I had my eye looked at two weeks ago.
I guess I'm hopeful my test will be fine and I'll learn from this mistake.
I hope you are doing well and I appreciate you taking your time to read my concern.
Best to you!

Hi Life,

That's ok. I know you weren't trying to be offensive. I am sure you will be more thoughtful with your choice of words in future. :)

Remember that HIV has a 3 month window period. That means you cannot be sure a negative test result is reliable until three months after the last episode of unprotected anal or vaginal sex. Whilst it's unlikely you've been infected as a result of this encounter, you need to have a test at the end of the window period to be sure.

Do keep us posted.

Best regards,

MtD
