Hi, my situation is as follows: had sex with prostitute on Dec 30/06 in CUBA. i was drunk and dont really remember too much which is the reason i am very concerned. I remember putting a condom on but do not remember taking it off. The sex did not last long, a few minutes tops, but i did ejaculate. Came back to Canada and had cold like symptoms (runny nose, Phlegm in throat) but made nothing of it. However, i was also experiencing some pain in the testicle and groin so i went to a walk in clininc where the doctor gave me pills for a tract infection (or something like that). Pills did not help so i went to a mens clinic where the Dr told me i have Chlamydia (without actually testing for it) and gave me Doxycycline. testicle discomfort went away but by Feb (1 month after possible exposure) i started experiencing frequent urination, dark cloudy urine, a sore lower back and very loose, watery diarrhea and a slight fever. After researching symptoms on the internet, i came across HIV which caused me to panic. I then felt very weak, depressed and developed a sore throat soon after (felt enlarged, although not diagnosed). I've also developed some type of brown spots on my abdomen (which after googling it, look like KS).  Today, 7 weeks later, i finally got tested but have to wait 2 weeks for the results. Am i high risk and is this indicative of HIV?

First of all excessive drinking and sex don't mix. You had protected sex so I don't see where you have a concern. See your doctor for your signs and symptoms. They can not be diagnosed on the internet.

thanks for the prompt response Rod, and i totally agree with your point about drinking and sex.  However, my concern is due to the fact that i am unsure whether it was actually protected sex or not.  If i did in fact have Chlamydia as i was told by the doctor at the walk in clinic (although he never tested me for it), then the sex must not have been protected right?  which means i am potentially at risk for HIV also.  And is there any correaltion between primary infection and diarrhea?  brown spots?

Symptoms or even the lack of symptoms means nothing when it comes to hiv infection. ONLY testing will reliably inform you of your status.

Nothing you report sounds hiv related. It sounds as though you used a condom and were protected, so chances are excellent that you are worrying over nothing. Hiv is a fragile, difficult to transmit virus and more so from a woman to a man, so even if the condom did go missing, you would be unlikely to become infected from one, brief encounter.

I'm fully expecting your seven week test to return negative results. The vast majority of people who have actually been infected will seroconvert and test positive by SIX weeks, so a negative at seven will be good news indeed. As you are not 100% sure a condom was used throughout, you should confirm that result with another test at the three month point.

As for the chlamydia, that is an infection which is MUCH more easily transmitted than hiv is - besides, you don't know if you actually had chlamydia or not as you were not tested for it.

a quack?  haha!   thanks again guys i really appreciate it.  The reason he didnt test me for it was because i went to see another doctor before him and the other doctor gave me some pills for a tract infection.  The "quack" doctor told me you cant test for chlamydia if you're on other pills.

can some on tell me??? can you have most of the text book symptoms manifest 2 days after testing and the test show up FALSE NEG - i was tested 45 days after possible exposure and 2 days later (47) had awlful symptoms/ but on day 52 I was told my test was NEG and all symptoms left me within hours. Today, one day after i was notified, i feel GREAT? please give me some knowldege/ comfort/  what is the window between symptoms and anitbodies being detected? the public health worker who gave me the resulst insured me I was NEG and just feeling guilty
