him pos her neg how so?
« on: January 09, 2011, 08:07:58 pm »
My husband and I have been together for over 13 years. In 2008 he started losing weight and just didn't feel well. After 1 year and tons of drs he was finanlly diagnoised in Oct 2009 as being HIV pos. His CD4 were 143 and his VL was over 700,000. He was put on Truvada and Isentress. His CD4 is up to 276 and his VL is undectable. Within days of his diagnoises I had my first test. It was neg. I go every 3 months and get tested and as of last week I am still neg. I am not complaining but I just don't understand how I didn't become infected. Has anybody ever heard of this before?

Hi,

It depends on what sort of sex you and your husband were having. I'll assume unprotected vaginal sex.

Yes this does happen from time to time. HIV is not an easy virus to transmit, even during unprotected sex. So it might be that you've just been lucky and dodged the bullet so to speak. It would also depend on when your husband was infected. The chance of transmission during a long standing sexual relationship is increased the more often you have unprotected sex.

It could also be that you might have some natural resistance to the virus. This is extremely rare but it does happen. You might ask your doctor to follow this up.

Of course from now on you should be using condoms whenever you and your husband have vaginal or anal sex.

Hi icuspeak,

My husband is HIV+ and I'm HIV-. We were married 4 years when my hubby started losing weight and didn't feel well. That was in May 06. His CD4 was like 80 and his VL was very high, cant remember the exact number but it was way up there. We had used condoms for birth control but there were a few times that we didn't. If we did anything where there was no chance of me getting pregnant we didn't use condoms. Now of course we use condoms every time we have sex.

I go get tested once a year and have tested HIV negative every time. Is there a reason you go every 3 months to get tested? Do you use condoms when having sex?

Hugs
Teresa

Hi Teresa. We never used condoms prior to his diagnoises but have since then. The clinic told me I only had to test once a year but I feel better going every 3 months.  I have learned a lot about this disease and I know i'm safe but I guess i'm a little paronoid

I can understand how you feel about getting tested. I am a bit anxious when I get my HIV test even though I know we have been safe. I think its perfectly normal to be anxious about it. In time maybe you will feel comfortable in getting tested every 6 months and then  work up to getting tested once a year. But you do what ever makes you feel comfortable.

If you ever need to talk you can send me a PM after you have posted on the forums 3 times.

Hugs

Hi icuspeak and Teresa,

I have the same situation. My boyfriend and I have been dating since 2005 and  in 2007 he started losing weight and getting one illness after another, He went from dr. to dr. and had test after test until he was finally diagnosed in April 2010! I was tested in May (we hadn't had sex since March because he was so sick) and I swore I would be positive too but I was negative! We had had sex since 2005 anywhere and everywhere, more times than I could count and always unprotected. So this does happen. But, I know I should be tested again, and haven't yet. Also, since his diagnosis we always use condoms.

Still hard to comprehend. Often the +ve part would have got infected from a brief encounter (sometimes cheating) yet repeated unproctected sex with their regular partner does not result in infection. The only reasonable explanation then is that the uninfectable has 'natural resistance' as you say.
