Atripla question for everyone who is on this med
« on: April 14, 2011, 10:11:03 pm »
Just wondering about this med, I have done a lot of research on this pill and this is probably the med I will eventually be on. My question is I know you have to take it at night on a empty stomach but.... I love eating a small salad just before i go to bed, will this effect the med? My bedtime is normally around 11ish pm and dinner is normally about 630 7pm for me. Think a salad will be okay? Thanks everyone

Ya you should prob be fine.  Basically the side effects start out strong and diminish as time goes on (at least for me thats how it happened).  So when you begin taking it you may want to skip your salad (especially the dressing, as its the fat that increases the side effects).  After a few weeks when your body is better tollerating it you can start to introduce it back.

From my understanding even if you take it right after eating a meal it does not affect the medications ability to function, it only effects your body's side effects to it.  So if you take it with a meal, it still works, you just might feel it more than if you take it on an empty stomache.  Either way, after a short time, you get used to it..It definately is not as bad as some of the things your read on here (at least for me it isnt)

Atripla is one of the most forgiving meds out there.  Some people tolerate it well others do not...  I like the med because of its convenience...  Just keep in mind the first couple of days you will feel as though you are drunk so i strongly suggest that you take it when you are ready to go to bed.  In some folks they don't get or any symptoms at all.   And yes fatty food increases the effects in some people..  Minipoz I strongly strongly suggest to purchase a pill box with the days of the week it will help you keep track when you took the pills.  This has been a stress reliever for me..  just something that you might want to think about it..  BTW i have been on Atripla since October and i rarely get any of the side effects now.  I think that happened after the first week of taking the med...

It would be ok to eat a salad.

    But.......

I wouldn't do it the first  week though, in the beginning you may experience a queasiness that can be compounded by certain foods, namely anything fatty.  When I started taking Atripla I couldn't eat anything for the rest of the night, but after about a month I was downing leftover pizza a couple of hours after taking my dose.  While you'll see that it more than likely won't be that first night, you will know when you can get away with a late night snack.   Just remember to avoid fatty foods a couple hours before and after the dose, especially in the beginning.    For me, eating anything before or after would cause me some pretty intense dreams and a high similar to downing a beer really fast.

I agree with the posters that suggest you get used to it first. I had an adjustment period of about three weeks but my numbers started in the basement. Now, I can eat whatever I want with little effect. Just depends on the person.  :)

Hello,

I have been on Atripla for 3+ years now.  Although it has kept me undetectable, I have problems sleeping when I take it at night.  I wake up with bags under my eyes and feel tired all the time.  An online friend, "pos buddy",  told me that his doctor said he can take it every other day since the components in Atripla last for days.   I thought about it for some time and also asked my doctor.  My doctor said there was no significant research on taking it every other day and did not recommend this.  He said it was too risky.  So I continued taking it every night.  After a month or so, I got frustrated and decided to not take it one night.  I slept like a baby and felt better.  Although not to proud of this, for the last year,  I have been taking it every other day and fortunately still undetectable.  I know this is risky but dealing with the side effects helped me make this not-so-good decision.  I recently started taking it in the mornings and I feel really drunk for the first few hours, but feel better overall as I now sleep well every night vs every other night. I try to stay away from fatty foods since it does make a difference.  I am really having a hard time today.  I had nuts as a snack yesterday evening and when I took my pill this morning, it kicked me in the butt--feel really out of it today.  Anyone have advice or recommendations.

If the side effects have gotten so bad that you have gone against your doctors advice and are only taking your medication every other day; why didn't you switch to another regimen that suits you better (that you could take as directed)?   Why would you put your health at risk?  What led you to make this decision?

I do need to re-evaluate my meds with my doctor.  We discussed it 3 months ago and he suggested I stay away from high fat content foods a few hours before I take it. It made a small difference but still having problems sleeping.  Then I decided to take it in the morning and feel a little drunk for a few hours.   Was hoping I could find a way to deal with or prevent the side effects since it Atripla is very effective.

Lots of 1 x day combos are effective, maybe more tabs, but no need to suffer for sake of 1 pill. I get the "it's working" thing. I was loathe to change me combo that was working good but for some side effects. Now very glad I did, finally, change.

Thanks Matt.  Looks like I need to accept Atripla is not working for me.  Have really tried different ways of taking it and still having problems.   Just afraid of the potential side effects of a new cocktail.

I strongly strongly suggest to purchase a pill box with the days of the week it will help you keep track when you took the pills.  This has been a stress reliever for me.

I bought a pill box today and started taking vitamin C pills...simulating Atripla and practicing with it.
Hope I'm gonna need it, still waiting for genotype results...

I have my pills setup in the medicine cabinet with the morning pills (multi-vitamin, vitamin C, sotalol hcl) on the top shelf, my evening pills (coumidin, tricor) on the middle shelf and my nighttime pills (sotalol again and atripla) on the bottom shelf.  It helps to stay organized and it's easier to remember when and if I have taken my pills.  At one time I was on about 12 medications a day and it was a real pain in the butt keeping them straight because I had them altogether in the kitchen cabinet and I had to really stop and think about what I had and hadn't taken.  Organization was the key for me, and once I got on the rhythm of taking the meds it was much easier.
