This thread would be a good place for members to post links they've found regarding Seattle. I'm thinking it might turn into a fun potpourri of information, attractions, and facts regarding the site of AMG 2011.

Because of the recent discussion regarding weather, I'm going to start it off with this link, click on the button "Seattle Climate Data" toward the end of the opening post.

Here's the link for the Metro, which is the bus system for Seattle. They have a discount card for people with disabilities and those over a certain age, but for the disability qualification, you actually have to prove it, such as with a SSDI/SSI letter or Medicare card, so only some of us will qualify. But the buses seem to go almost everywhere downtown.

Well, the iPhones did come in handy, those Davids do love their toys -- but I think the fact that I had lived in Boston for 3+ yrs and worked there for 10, just might have given us a small edge...........

The underground tour in Pioneer Square is touristy but surprisingly fun and interesting. (After Seattle suffered a catastrophic fire, the rebuilding was done *over* the existing structures, and some of the old city still exists, mothballed. For some time after rebuilding, the city hadn't gotten around to re-creating the streets at the new level, leading to news reports of people stepping off a sidewalk and breaking both legs. This confused non-locals.)

Also, it never actually rains. We just spread those rumors to keep people from moving here.

OK, the truth is, summers used to be very clear, sunny and dry (after the first few weeks of July and often into October), but in recent years the number of humid days has been increasing.

But anticipate low-humidity wide temperature swings. Dress in layers, and be prepared for early morning chill requiring a substantial coat, followed by afternoons suitable for T-shirt and shorts. Maybe that explains why the parka-and-shorts look is so common in Seattle.

Metro does get you all over downtown, and free, too. Downtown is a ride-free zone, and then there is a confusing system once you get out of it: for rides that originate outside downtown and go to downtown, pay as you enter; for rides that originate downtown and end outside the ride-free zone, pay as you leave. And bring exact change. And get a transfer.

I'd love to do a boat ride that takes in the panorama of what has always looked to be a very pretty city. I suppose a trip up to the Space Needle to see the views would be nice as well. Is is Peugot Sound that is right in Seattle or is that further away?

Peugeot is a brand of car manufactured in France. Puget Sound is the 100-mile long estuarine system that Seattle sits on, as well as Takoma and Olympia.

The Bremerton ferry used to be a great day trip leaving from Seattle Pier 52 and going around islands in the Sound. If it is a warn week, it would be a good way to spend a half day in August (it is about an hour's ride to Bremerton, a break and an hour back), and the ferries are pretty reasonably priced. There used to be some interesting things to look at in Bremerton too (there was a naval yard there).

Oh, and that's Tacoma with a C for all you effete decadent Eastern types -- the real test will come when you try to pronounce Puyallup (hint, dyslexia helps).

I was looking some stuff up online on Seattle. Theirs a Seattle Pass that gives you access too I believe it was 6 different places.

What caught my attention was theirs an Aquariam and a Zoo in Seattle. I would love to visit those! =) and that underground tour as well that looks like so much fun.

We are totally up for the zoo and aquarium! Love that stuff...we didn't get to the Boston Aquarium but I did go when I went to the vamps at NIH last year.

I went to the Carnation Research Farm in '79 but it's owned by Nestle now and I don't think the Swiss offer the same tour. I would be up for a day trip to Vancouver, BC, but is it really a day trip? (I hear I can enjoy a good Old Fashioned cocktail down the road in Vancouver, WA.)

Hey Basquo, Vancouver BC probably isn't a day trip, the city just has too much to offer. But if you can, I'd certainly recommend extending your stay and taking a day or two to visit our neighbors to the North. Vancouver BC is a wonderful city.

Here's a pretty broad view of Seattle. Though in my opinion it doesn't really capture the wonder and beauty of the city.

You would need to block out an entire day to tour the Olympic Peninsula, but it is truly spectacular to see. The rainforest is an interesting spot there to visit too. I love the name they gave it. Ho.

I thought we each got a ribbon and there was only 1 team trophy! Which in Boston was stolen (as I said earlier) by Jody and Aztecan. How the heck did you get a trophy? Who'd you do?

If anyone has any questions about Seattle I can prob help out..as I live here. Someone earlier posted about seeing the city from the sound, someone else recommended taking a ferry. I would skip the ferry and take an Argosy city cruise instead. The take you out on a boat and go from the sound, through the lochs, and end up in lake union. Its a guided tour and you get to see a lot of the city from the view of a boat. Its a good trip and worth it. I recommend.

Dude! The res is something like a 4-hour drive from Seattle. I was all for doing the Twilight thing too until I started mapping it. Going over to the 101 to see the east side of the park is one thing, but I don't think there are any major roads going through the park, which means you have to skirt all the way over the north side to get to the Forks/La Push area. It would make for a really long day, but then again there's still 13-14 daylight hours at that time of the year.

You serious? We would probably be the oldest tourist without kids!

I hate to break it to the Twihards, but most of the second and tird movies were filmed in and around Vancouver, BC.

Yes, you could do a daytrip here from Seattle, but it would be rushed. Amtrak has a train that leaves Seattle in the morning and returns late in the afternoon. Otherwise its a 2-3 hour drive each way.

Jan PMed me about there not being a scavenger hunt in Seattle and I was bummed. Apparently nobody looked into the link I posted about the very reasonably priced scavenger hunt option. Seeing how the one in Boston was such a raging success, maybe one of the planning folks can do some research and maybe we could do one in Seattle too. Please don't freak out over me reposting the link, I'm just trying to provide a little incentive for somebody to pay attention! LOL

If it's doable I'm in, it was good fun in Boston, even thought we were robbed of the trophy, but I want to be in Mikes team, as a punishement for stealing our trophy he has to push me around in a wheelchair..I'm not going to rely on RAB, he would run off and leave me lying there legless, he will do anything to win..

Defiately something to think about guys, and it's a great way to see the city.

Well, dear -- I'm looking at my BLUE ribbon -- with a 1st Prize Winner title on it -- oh yeah, it's hanging off of the TROPHY my team won.

You all have been crying over missing that steaming TEA KETTLE (not cup) for 2 years now. Get over it -- not sure how you all missed it -- my team saw it the moment we rounded the corner to Government Center.

Jan -- if you want to be on my team, you have a little over 2 months to start working out and strengthening those legs -- I'm afraid I might be just like RAB and leave you behind if you slow us down on our way to victory.

Some of us are just better at deciphering clues (of course the dualing iPhones of the Davids didn't hurt either).

Jan, you're right, I would leave you behind "leggless", if it came down to a choice of victory vs friendship. But rest assured, I'd eventually work my way back to retrieve you. EVENTUALLY.

I noticed the link Ody supplied said that "Seattle bufs" won't have any additional advantage because of the way the hunt is formated.

I think that sucks! While I've been gone from Seattle nearly 15 years and probably wouldn't be much help, at least I would have some knowledge.

I say we do it.

As you know, Grunge Rock (the Seattle Sound) was big in the 1980s. The city always seems to be on the cutting edge when it comes to giving music to the world.

Lets find these guys in Pioneer Square and perhaps they will come up with a theme song for AMG11.

I must admit -- There was one clue about which I was, well, clueless....... I forget the exact details, but it was about a statue (some animal, perhaps??) -- I could tell that it was somewhere near the Omni Parker House by the clue, but the rest was solved with the help of google.

So... while that one was a hard one, I still stand by the fact that the steaming kettle was the easiest damned clue of the bunch!!

We found it too missy. In fact the only thing we didn't get was a picture of two guys wearing a redsox hat.

We actually got it, but we misread the clue, I think we all had to be in that pic, and we weren't.

Update on the Citypass...it includes the Experience Music Project which Michael says is fantastic. He's a passholder. Evidently it was founded through Jimi Hendrix's estate and has evolved into a lot more. The monorail is right there (short as it is) and the Science Fiction Museum is inside it as well, from what I understand.

We are thinking about doing the Music/Sci-Fi thing on Friday afternoon. Breakfast, Memorial Service, Michael takes us to a fabulous off-track seafood restaurant, then the Music/Sci-Fi, then probably a short disco-nap is in order before spramping up for the Meet-n-Greet.

Still thinking about when to go to the zoo, aquarium, etc. I definitely want to go to the locks and underwater salmon-viewing windows, which I believe is free, and hopefully they will have the guide wires ready so's Jan and Robert and Will and me can jump off the Space Needle.

Don't forget about Wolfie. I bungeed off the 2nd tallest bridge in the world in Fayetteville WVA. It spans the New River Gorge where we go white water rafting (has class 5 rapids). You know what the last words of my hillbillies are; "hey bubba, watch this"...lol

Kinda weird that I'm terrified of flying but will do any crazy activity offered.

omigod! I've done that too! I loooove going down the New River. We've shot the rapids on the upper and lower halves maybe 7 or 8 times. Having lived on both sides of the Appalachians, whether in OH or the Carolinas, W VA is a lovely place to visit (but I wouldn't want to live there! LOL) It's a great place to ski in too (although in my case that was mainly just falling down the mountain. ROFL I can't water ski either

When I was there a few years ago doing the upper gulley with a group of friends there was a group of gay people taking the adventure. They were staying next to us at the campground and I had a blast with them. We're scheduling a cousins reunion in September to do that adventure. I love that place and it's not far from our original homestead. It would be a great AMG location.

Safeco Field where the Mariners play (unfortunately for Jan, Robert, and all you other MLB fans they'll be on the road when we are there).

I go to a specialty place here that serves oysters from Chincoteague up to Cape May and also Long Island. Prepare to spend $25-$30 for a dozen. Which is why I go when an out-of-towner is present and on an expense account

They also regularly feature Royal Miyagi oysters which are from Vancouver Is., British Columbia so same species found in Puget Sound. They are a species that are originally from Japan. If you want native oysters in Seattle you have to make sure it is an Olympia oyster. I believe they are now much less prevalent than the Pacific Oyster (like the Royal Miyagi) because those are much easier to cultivate.

I'm going to be very curious what I think of the new (well "new" in the sense it was built after we moved) central Library. It's design and architecture is to say the least, unusual. I remember when the design was originally submitted, it caused a lot of controvery.

This library was built on the site of the previous library (which was a rat hole). In the interim the library temporarily located to the convention center (which along with Freeway Park) straddles I-5).

Just a heads-up if you look for Bamboo Garden -- it's not in the International District, it's just north of Seattle Center (where the Space Needle, the Opera House, Intiman, and Key Arena are). The I.D. is at the south edge of downtown; Seattle Center is north of downtown.

Does Seattle have vegetarian restaurants? Does Milwaukee have beer? Cafe Flora (on Madison -- a real estate agent would call the area Capitol Hill) is the biggest name - upscale menus and upscale prices. Sunlight Cafe (Roosevelt district, north of University district) is a hippie throwback, but a good one. And Gelatiamo downtown on 3rd Ave generally doesn't put meat in their gelato, except a little bit of Spam.

Some excellent food (depending on who on staff made it), but not cheap, can be had at the deli at PCC Natural Market in Fremont. "PCC" because it's PC but even more so. They got your vegan, they got your gluten-free, they got your not-processed-in-a-facility-within-3.5-miles-of-peanuts. Be careful not to get trampled by the yuppies from Getty Images and Adobe.

RAB it wasnt clear if you could do it there , so I did it online... same with the shuttle bus...actually need a reservation for that one..... for depart and pickup.... in any case it could save waiting in lines and filling out forms

Light Rail from SeaTac to Downtown:

This leaves from the airport every 10 minutes and will take us to the last stop (westlake Center) which is just 2 blocks from the hotel. It may be the way to get out of the airport fast and into the city. Just a thought. The fair is $2.75 per person.

Just wanted to add that if you do plan to take light rail from the airport, you need to make your way the the 4th level of the airport parking garage for access to the pedestrian walkway leading to the station.
