If I lived there, I would vote for Spitzer.  My memory is fuzzy, but I thought he admitted to what he did, once it came out.  Did he lie at first?  Even if he did, I think he has genuinely tried to get back on track and discuss the issues facing New Yorkers and Americans.

Spitzer was born to accomplished parents, grew up in vast wealth, had an exciting career, and is probably a genius or near genius.  The job he's seeking seems to be below his capacities and outside his interests....

As for the sexual liberation aspect of the two stories, my kinky self wants Spitzer to b*tt f*ck Weiner to bring these stories to the climax.

It's the new normal now isn't it?

But, It's not normal behavior. Whether it's Spitzer, or Weiner, its  a form of spousal abuse.  There are victims involved here. The wives and the families.

Why I'm shocked. Married men, men in relationships and uh, men showing their junk on the intertubes. Thank God no one around here would succumb to such deviant behavior.

Taking a left turn from this main avenue discussion onto "No She Didn't Lane", I watched the talk show Katie today with Shirley Jones (Partridge Family mom among her works) as guest to talk about her very frank book about her life in and out of show business.

Ms. Jones looked wonderful.  Katie asked her what was her secret for looking so good as she is approaching 80 (the audience gasped as they couldn't believe her age).  Ms. Jones responded "Masturbation!" with a big grin.  She later explained that sex just makes you feel good and the byproduct is you look good.

She mentioned that her first husband Cassidy was quite adventurous sexually and encouraged her to do a threesome.  She also said that he was bi-polar and apparently bisexual.

Well, Katie showed all her teeth and gum ridges when she gave that "No she didn't" look/grin.  The audience loved it.

So sex, sex, sex is still in the air from all quarters.

 :) ;) :D ;D

I don't feel that bad for Huma. Weiner is the primary caregiver for their chlid, they had to downsize to a prewar on Park and he has nice looking feet. She could do worse. She's probably glad the horndog keeps himself busy on the internet while she lunches at his brother's nearby restaurants.

I don't feel sorry for her either. She's choosing to stay after/during all the "abuse". It's her decision to make but it doesn't mean I have to feel bad for her.

I don't either. As another poster predicted Tumblr is taking away gay folks sweetspot - at least the ones who view gifs on their smartphone. So glad I use a laptop. I wonder what the weiner's Tumblr name is?

Assuming Huma got some guidance on the whole scandal from Hillary, (and I don't know at all if that's true), I lost some respect for Hillary.  Hillary was older and also pretty boxed in during Bill's sex scandal, seeing as she was serving as First Lady...

I guess these women love their husbands and who knows what private arrangements they have made.... But Huma was just entering the prime of her career. She should have dropped the creepy Weiner.

I mean its one thing to have your joe ordinary job and have your spouse sexting and say, oh, well, who really gives a shit, its 2013.
But these are people in government.  Its career suicide and for Weiner to continue after losing his job, but planning a comeback - something does NOT compute...  Huma couldn't have been OK with this all along because it was a threat to his career as well as hers...
I wonder what the options are for horny politicians. Is America ready for a big city mayor or governor or POTUS with a mistress?  Or a Casanova type who is known to have affairs, known in the way we all know things now, 2013, and not like in 1963 with JFK.
Is a guy like Weiner supposed to be content with his wife and porn and jerking off?

No prostitutes are allowed, we have learned that.

Doesn't seem like open marriages and affairs and mistresses and lovers are gonna fly.

Sexting is not the same as masturbation.  Theres another live human being involved. Its somewhere between jerking off to porn, and outright having sex with someone.  Its less unfaithful, than Bill Clinton's real sex, which "wasn't sex" in some reasoning none of us understood.

IMO opinion, I think if spouse and masturbation isn't enough, the way to go would be a classy affair and just affirming it when it became public.  You'd lose a lot of the religious public, but also I think a fair chunk of the public would be, OK, cool, how sophisticated and modern. Especially with no dirty pics on the intertubes, just the politician and the mistress having a romantic weekend at the Greenbrier or something like that.

A married middle aged guy in government sexting his johnson is just so tacky and skeevy.  If he were single, and young, it might not seem as pathetic. Though still pretty dumb and clumsy.

There was some study suggesting your name has a lot to do with your choices.  They claimed there was a high percentage of dentists named Dennis.  They claimed this was based on ego.  So, perhaps Weiner is so obsessed with showing his weiner, due to his name.   ;)

"I've become desensitized to this kind of stuff. It's the new normal now isn't it?"

Men have been masturbating by any and all available means since God created penises... or at least since Johnson & Johnson invented hand lotion. So I don't get all the fuss about, omg, he's an elected official he shouldn't be touching himself.

What's disturbing and seems to be the new normal is the media thinking they can publish private sexts and photos of a man's junk and call it journalism.

I don't know, there's just a part of me that feels we don't have a right to know these things about people's private lives.

YAY!!

For real

Who the F cares?

Imagine if you yourself were in danger of losing your job because someone found out you texted a pic of your junk to some girl/boy you found on the Internet.

This obsession with Americans punishing people by ruining their careers because they made a stupid choice in their private life is beyond me.  We have done it with spitzer, wiener, Paula deen, almost with Clinton.

The fuss is the he's a married elected official sending pics to 23 year olds, and  that he carried on for up to a year, maybe never stopped,  after he resigned and told the public he made a horrible mistake and asked for forgiveness from the public and his wife.

In bygone eras we used to hold elected officials to a higher moral caliber than the rest of us. The new normal is that we dont care anymore. These stories, to me, are ho-hum and Yawn now.

What amazes me is Rushbo, Becko, and O'Reillyo spew hatred and intolerance and not only keep their jobs but make millions doing so.
Racist comments, no problem. False information, no problem.
I guess you just have to chalk it up to freedom of speech.
The slightest personal error from a politician comes with a demand for resignation.

Some "mistakes" deserve a closer look but IMO these "mistakes" need to have a strong connection to doing harm to the public welfare.

Oh come now Willy -- first, what does being 23 have to do with anything?  (You know I'm resisting a comment here...  ;) )

Also -- in bygone eras the media didn't publish these indiscretions...  else FDR and JFK would have been toast (to name only two).  Eleanor and Jackie simply dealt with it in their own private ways, I guess.  Frankly, if Huma is "OK" with it, who the fuck am I to judge.

At the end of the day -- this isn't "journalism", it's marketing.....  the papers and networks are using it to get faces, which allows them to charge more for advertisements, which is what all their big corporate owners care about.  There is no real journalism left today.

Reasons I believe Carlos Danger has a foot fetish;

Whenever Carlos takes a picture of his junk it is taken from a standing position. Are those pictures of his fat knob head or of his feet?

He wanted that poor 23 year old woman in Chicago - you know - the one who was having phone sex with him - to send him more pictures of her in high heels.

How many other politicians do you know who appeared in NY Times magazine barefoot in street clothes?

Now that I've cleared that up I wanted to let everyone now I PROMISE to never run for political office. Therefore, if you have any selfies or vines you think I should see just send me a pm. I will be happy to supply you with my Tumblr name. I even have a secret Yahoo mail like Carlos. Please note: I don't have a snapchat account, however, I can give you my Google/Voice number and they will be forwarded to my cell phone.

Thanks for reading!
Have the best day!

My point is that he should have never been put in the position of having to explain himself and his masturbatorial practices to the media in the first place...

This thread is just one small reason why we will continue to see these sorts of "sensational" stories.
We are talking about it -- which means, we've read or viewed some story about it.  This means a story like this can help increase traffic / sales, which means advertisers can be guaranteed more viewers, which translates into more $$$$$$ for these media outlets (I am purposely NOT using the term "news" here).

I agree he shouldn't have his sex life examined in public but on the other hand the very nature of the story is that he was and wants to again be a public official and he chose to put his dong out there.  There are several reasons the story has captured the publics attention but one of them is that its an opportunity to discuss sexting which is newish, seemingly pervasive, but hasn't had much discussion.  About 5 years ago began the discussion about teenagers and what they are doing with smart phones and then there was a discussion about college aged kids getting "wise", or not, about what kind of permanent trace evidence they were putting on the net and how it could damage their futures, but up to now there wasn't much discussion about adults and what it means to be doing this.
I'd say it "soft" news but its news. Its about zeitgeist.

Shaming, it seems, has become a core competency of the Internet, and it’s one that can destroy both lives and livelihoods. But the question of who’s responsible for the destruction — the person engaging in the behavior or the person revealing it — depends on whom you ask. At its best, social media has given a voice to the disenfranchised, allowing them to bypass the gatekeepers of power and publicize injustices that might otherwise remain invisible. At its worst, it’s a weapon of mass reputation destruction, capable of amplifying slander, bullying, and casual idiocy on a scale never before possible.

"...he was and wants to again be a public official and he chose to put his dong out there..."

He didn't put it out there, though, the individual with whom he was privately sexting put it out there. The account also was under an alias... clearly there was an expectation of privacy and anonymity.

I'm reminded, too, of how not too long after Clay Aiken won A.I., someone from a gay hookup site came forward telling about his alleged sexual tryst with Aiken (who was also using an alias). Howard Stern devoted an entire hour of his radio program interviewing the guy about all of the lurid details of their encounter.

This notion that if you're in the public eye for any reason, all of sudden every private thing about you is fair game and available for public consumption... it's just wrong. And politically speaking, it pretty much ensures we'll only have holier-than-thou types who only have heterosexual relations in the missionary position with their lawfully wedded seeking public office.

Well Im a sleazeball and not casting the first stone at Weiner.  I agree we dont want to encourage this holier-than-thou charade, or god forbid, actual puritans as the only viable politicians.

If Weiner really considers, himself, his own morality, that the sexting was wrong, as he said so in response to the scandal, fine. His right.  But as John Oliver painstakingly explained the other day on the Daily Show, well after the fall from grace, Weiner held himself a cynical, lying PR campaign about being a changed man, and regret and redemption, blah blah, while he was STILL sexting.

Not for me to say what he should do.  But i certainly would have had more respect for him if he had said "my sexting is nobody's business" and left it at that.

The Clay Aiken story is a false analogy. (jaja I said "anal".) Howard Stern is a shock jock and what you describe is deplorable!!  I didn't say everyone in the "pubic eye" is free game for invasion of their privacy.

Clinton was impeached for lying under oath about a sex scandal.

I don't have the solution. im not sure what politicians should do because its not clear what the public is ready to give a pass to.

I'm not sure he should have resigned. So many representatives Dems and Reps were calling on him to resign and Obama thought it was the solution, as well.  THEY were the ones casting stones, not necessarily the public. The public polls in NY at the time, were split.

He chose the "sin, sex problem-treatment, redemption" narrative.

Weren't you married and had affairs?

Nope, wasn't me. You talk as if you expect the two to go together, is it because you were raised that way?

If Weiner really considers, himself, his own morality, that the sexting was wrong, as he said so in response to the scandal, fine. His right.  But as John Oliver painstakingly explained the other day on the Daily Show, well after the fall from grace, Weiner held himself a cynical, lying PR campaign about being a changed man, and regret and redemption, blah blah, while he was STILL sexting.

Nope. I was raised to believe that people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.

Of course I would vote for Wiener any day over these ring wing nut cases that control the Republican party. They may not have any dong pics online, but they're trying hard to shove a camera up the vagina of every woman in America.

Let me qualify what I just said. For the record I have zero respect for Wiener for several reasons. First I think he was sexually aggressive with women online and it wasn't consensual. Second, I think he is an opportunist that would do just about anything to get elected. He had no problem playing the race card in his first election and his views on Israel are to the right of the neocons. That said I would hold my nose and vote for Wiener if he was running against Louie Gomert. Bottom line he brought this upon himself, but if the voters choose to elect him, so be it.

I don't buy this at all.  This story is really all about how sex sells.

Our VA governor is being looked at by the feds because he and his family have taken money and gifts from a CEO who's company was being sued by the state (or potentially going to be sued).  This barely registers outside of the state, but a NYC mayoral candidates sexting is headline story for days on every media outlet????  WTF????

We have no more true news outlets -- they all are about the bottomline and let's face it, if sex can help sell toothpaste, imagine what it will do for newspapers, magazines and television shows.

This is, at best, newsworthy for the NYC area.

Why did he feel the need to reveal his true identity?  He could have easily had his fun and kept his identity secret.  If this is just some sex addiction (which isn't that the definition, when it interferes in your personal life), then you just have your fun and never reveal your identity. It seems like ego, to me.  I mean, if you're married and a public figure, it is different from being single.  Perhaps he is starved for attention, either through a huge ego, or just what happens in many marriages.

And, what about this girl from Indiana telling all?  She said she contacted him, because she was a fan.  She said he ended up not being the man she thought he was.  But, it is my understanding she met him after his fall.  She seems very sketchy to me-- contacting him and then telling all on Inside Edition.  She claims he got very possessive, looking over her Facebook profile to see what guys were talking to her.

That is one show - and is only there because he's a Republican and she loves to chop them down.  I haven't seen this story on Today, or the NBC evening news, CNN, etc....
That is my point.... What is worse, a politician "selling his office" or a candidate sexting?

I have been perplexed why that story hasn't gotten attention.  I've only seen it on Maddow.  The media loves a sex story, but they usually don't shy from a good abuse of power story.  I can't understand it.  I began wondering whether they feel there isn't enough evidence to run the story.  However, from what I've seen on Maddow, there seems to be overwhelming evidence.

It is not clear if he broke any laws, because most money and gifts were actually given to his family (wife, daughter).  The Feds are investigating, there are calls for his resignation and his hope for the White House is, pretty much, done.   Oh, he also"repaid" this CEO so etching like $120,000 and has stopped wearing the Rolex he received as a gift, via his wife)

A politician selling his office is worse than a politician sexting.  Obviously.

Im the one who said Im not sure a politician sexting needs to be scandalous. But it was pretty obvious everyone needed to to discuss this.

I will give you this:  I watch a fair amount of the evening talk shows and its pretty lame how they all have the same content in their monologues...  I bet most Americans probably watch one, or probably listens to one shock jock, so pretty quickly everyone in the US "hears" what the current media events are.. A few are then blown up significantly...  I dont think any one stakeholder who is especially responsible - its not the press creating these events, not the popular media on broadcast tv, its not the zeitgeist across the internet blogs and forums, its not the people.  Its a mixed of one story/event capturing the interests of all these stakeholders.   Thats why (IMO) Weinergate isnt scandal for scandal sake because although its just fodder, boilerplate, for some of the stakeholders, (almost EVERYTHING seems like boilerplate on some venues in popular media) I see a lot of real discussion about the story among people.  So it seems like something that people decided they needed to discuss.

Did you see that report on Maddow the other day how the Republicans are rolling out a massive slash and burn campaign against Affordable Care.  "Burn your Government Mandated Insurance Card." ?   Just Say No to Government Health Care. etc etc.  So they want to manufacture a story - to get people talking...  Now THAT is going to SO much more be a "non-story" than Weiners' spontaneous and trail-blasing acts of smartphone exhibitionism....

But I'm still not understanding the Glass House metaphor that you keep dragging through this thread, clearly it's something you're obsessively stuck on. Care to explain? I am, however, highly flattered by your keen interest in my marriage. 8)

That's not surprising. You're cute but not too bright.
