Exposed?
« on: February 17, 2011, 10:59:08 am »
I had protected vaginal sex and unprotected oral sex several times with a man 8 weeks ago now. About 2 weeks after exposure I was constantly clearing my throat from mucus. After five weeks I developed a sore throat, slight cough and off and on diarrhea. I found out that he has an extensive sexual history with women (no men and no drug use). If I have another STD do condoms protect me effectively and what are the chances my symptoms are related to HIV? I tested negative for HIV 4 weeks after out last encounter (which was 6 weeks after our first encounter). I am plagued by constant worry. Thank you for taking the time to make us all more informed!

I forgot to mention I am still experiencing occasional diarrhea and a runny nose at 8 weeks. The sore throat is gone but I lm coughing occasionally.

You don't have an HIV concern, you've never had a risk.

Thank you for responding but how can I rationalize the symptoms and the timing?

You don't have to "rationalize" anything. Condoms provide very effective protection against HIV transmission. And the only confirmed sexual risks for HIV are unprotected vaginal and anal intercourse.

There is nothing even remotely HIV specific about your symptoms. That's not surprising since you didn't have a risk. Unfortunately your head is in the HIV jitters state which means it is busily misinterpreting everything that happens or doesn't happen as ANOTHER SIGN of HIV.

If you have symptoms that persist you should discuss them with your doctor. They have nothing to do with HIV. Really.

After having a sore throat, lingering cough, joint pain, muscle aches and headaches I supposed I've convinced myself. Thank you all for taking the time to respond it's comforting to hear feedback.

Fortunately fears and doubts aren't facts. And there is nothing in the facts you are reporting nor in HIV science to support any basis for thinking HIV is your problem. Zero on HIV risk.
