An excellent and affordable place to start is to buy the Dummies series book on Publishing a Book.

Don't self publish it's very tricky. Log on to scholastic books, random house, etc and read the guide lines. Visit the  library or Amazon.com and see you can find these two books how to write a children's book and get it published, and formatting and submitting manuscripts.    Always send a query letter with a self addressed stamped envelop for them to return materials once they're finished with it, include a SAS post card with a box to check saying they receipted manuscript. Send your material media mail (it cost less). Visit www.libraryof congress.com and print a copyright form. Make it with your while and type as many stories as you can and send it as a set. Publishing companies want to see if you have more stories to sell than that one.
