AIDSmeds needs your help!
« on: January 17, 2007, 11:37:55 pm »
After many months of work, we finally moved the rest of AIDSmeds.com's content over to Smart+Strong's servers -- this includes the home page, lessons, drug pages, news stories, Graph My Labs, and Check My Meds.  The blogs and forums had already been moved many months ago.

This wasn't easy.  We went from static HTML pages to database compiled pages.   We wrote a whole new lesson index system.  We switched internal search engines.  And on and on.

It also hasn't been fully tested.  We've definitely got plenty of broken links to fix, and pages that haven't compiled correctly.  This is where you can help us.  If you've got some time to kill, please start browsing our lessons and drug pages -- test all the links on a page -- navigate through our Spanish content if you're one of the lucky ones who can read that language.

Then, when you find a broken link, or a page that looks messed up in some way, post a reply to this thread letting us know.  Here's what we'd like you to post:

1)  For broken links, you'll see a page that looks like this:  http://www.aidsmeds.com.  Please cut & paste the URL of the page that had the broken link on it, as well as the URL of the missing page itself.

2)  For messed up pages, please cut & paste the URL, and give us a brief description of what looks wrong with the page.

We'd really appreciate your help!

Thanks,

Peter

Peter,

I am not quite sure whats causing it, but when I click on the"HIV life cycle"  from the introduction and through all steps 1-7, and finally ending with "printable version" .... IE-7 is telling me "done, but with errors on page".( Bottom left side of screen) I don't notice any errors. everything appears fine, and seems to be working OK.

When I click on that message, it does give me some information.

Just for an example ;

When I click "introduction' in the HIV life cycle at this url :

https://www.poz.com/basics/hiv-basics/hiv-life-cycle

I get the following error ;

LINE: 734

CHAR: 3

ERROR : OBJECT DOESN'T SUPPORT THIS PROPERTY OR METHOD

URL : Same url as above

And it happens throughout the lessons, but once again I see nothing wrong. Maybe it is at this end.

Ray, it sounds like an IE7 problem.  I still use IE6 (and plan to keep using it) and the pages come up correctly.  Perhaps there's an update or something you can install.  Also, google the error message and see if you can find any possible solutions.

Hello David,

I just get that triangular symbol with an exclamation point in it, at the bottom left of the page. Only after I click on that, it gives me the error on the page.

Still, I see nothing wrong with any of the pages, everything displays well, and the problem only started or was noticed today. I refer to the lessons quite a bit, and never had the problem before. Anyway, we"ll see what happens.

Take care-----Ray

I do believe the IE7 error comes from bad parsing of some Javascript (Ray, you can turn the error warnings off somewhere...).

More important...

You can't change the text size in IE5 and 6

Plus the "Collapse All" link on the right-hand navigtion don't work consistently

Hi,

I'm bi-lingual and was checking out your Spanish pages.  Your translator did a wonderful job.  But here are some problems I found:

***From page https://www.poz.com/basics/vih-sida-en-espanol  "Infecciones Oportunistas (IO)" or Opportunistic Infections, most of the links in the body of the page (not necessarily the index box) gave an error saying "the page cannot be found" when I clicked on them.

The following links under "Infecciones bacterianas" or Bacterial Infections didn't work:

Mycobacterium Avium Complex (MAC)     https://www.poz.com/basics/vih-sida-en-espanol
Mycobacterium Kansasii     https://www.poz.com/basics/vih-sida-en-espanol
Sífilis y neurosífilis     https://www.poz.com/basics/vih-sida-en-espanol/sifilis
Tuberculosis (TBC)     https://www.poz.com/basics/vih-sida-en-espanol

None of the links under "Malignidades (cánceres)" worked.

None of the links under "Infecciones Virales" worked.

Under the heading "Infecciones por hongos", only "Meningitis criptocócica" worked (it's the fourth in the list).

None of the links under "Infecciones por protozoos" worked.

None of the links under "Complejo de demencia relacionado al SIDA" worked.

None of the links under "Otras condiciones y complicaciones" worked.

***On the following pages, the links at the bottom (previous and next) should be translated to Spanish.  They're currently in English.
"Los análisis de sangre que necesitarás" https://www.poz.com/basics/vih-sida-en-espanol/analisis-de-laboratorio

I dont use IE anymore because I was having problems with spyware and viruses no matter how much I updated my system etc..Plus hackers know IE very well and get in to you're personal info, or can cause problems with you're computer This Avant browser offers more protection if you want to use a IE related browser and its free to download. But you still have to keep IE on the computer to use Avant as it goes thru IE with more protection.

http://www.download.com/Avant-Browser/3000-2356_4-10622942.html?tag=lst-0-1

If you want the best security for banking personal stuff etc... try Mozilla Firefox I swear by it the best security I've had so far and its a free download

http://www.latest-browser.com/

Now there are a few websites that don't support or recognize Mozilla because it's a Netscape type of browser. And it uses encrypted data. So if you find one that doesn't thats where I use the Avant Browser when it doesn't support Mozilla Instead of IE.

Yes it's 2 more browsers but I hardly ever get spyware and viruses anymore.

Oops, I didn't mean to hit enter.  I hate to be a downer, but I have more:

***On page "żEstoy infectado? (Una guía para los análisis del VIH)" https://www.poz.com/basics/vih-sida-en-espanol/pruebas-del-vih, there is a link to www.homeaccess.com, which is a page in English.  If they have a Spanish version, it would be better to link to that.

***On page "żCuándo debería comenzar el tratamiento? y żQué medicamentos debería tomar primero?" https://www.poz.com/basics/vih-sida-en-espanol/comenzar-el-tratamiento-para-el-vih there are charts that start around the middle of the page with links to medications.  All the links are to the English pages instead of the Spanish pages for those medications.

***On page "Comprende qué es la resistencia a los medicam" https://www.poz.com/basics/vih-sida-en-espanol/recomendaciones-para-el-tratamiento-del-vih, the last word in the title was cut off in the middle.

***On page "żCuándo debería cambiar mi tratamiento? y żPor cuáles medicamentos debería cambiarlo?" https://www.poz.com/basics/vih-sida-en-espanol/recomendaciones-para-el-tratamiento-del-vih, the last link in the body of the text to AIDSinfo.nih.gov does not exist.  It redirects the user to their English home page instead of the Spanish version.

***On page "żCuáles son las combinaciones de medicamentos más sencillas? (Una revisión de: Menos pastillas y una sola dosis diaria)" https://www.poz.com/basics/vih-sida-en-espanol/recomendaciones-para-el-tratamiento-del-vih, the links to the medications in the text and in the charts are are to the English versions.

Well, that's all for now.  I hope that was the kind of stuff you were looking for.  Glad to help.  I will try to see some more soon.

The main navigation links from the Check My Meds page switch to a secure (https://) protocol:

Therefore you get a "Do you want to display secure and non-secure items?" warning (annoying but...go on, let's view the page) and if you say NO you get no right/left-hand navigation options

...no word on the fixed text size in the lessons/drugs pages then?...

Manina -- WOW, these were VERY helpful.  All (but one) have now been fixed.  homeaccess.com doesn't have a Spanish page, so we're stuck with the link to their English-only site.  Also, the URL you found for "Comprende qué es la resistencia a los medicam" (https://www.poz.com/basics/vih-sida-en-espanol) was old, so we deleted the file.  If you know how you go there (which page had this old link), we'd love to know about it.  We can't find it.

Matt -- we thought the CMM nav links had been fixed, so thanks for pointing out that they hadn't been.  They're fixed now.

As for the text size, please save that for another thread.

The text size don't need another thread, it just needs fixing (or unfixing) so you can make the very good words in Lessons etc bigger/smaller to suit your eyesight.

Matt -- as you are well aware, this is a long-standing issue you've had with the site, and one that I mention to management every few months.  If you re-read my first post in this thread, you will see that I didn't ask for site design issues.  Please, let's keep this thread specific to broken links and pages with missing content.  You are hijacking this thread.

Generally, losts of links to Spanish info from drug names in the PN section of the OI info

eg on this page:

https://www.poz.com/drug_charts/hiv-medications

(also others)

(The Up one level link for this section also goes to the Side effects main page, not back to the OIs section, where PN info is accessed from the neuro conditions list...)

This page:

https://www.poz.com/basics/hiv-basics/hiv-women (Special Issues for Women & Children)...

The link to Special Issues for Women with HIV points to https://www.poz.com/basics/hiv-basics/hiv-women (page not found obviously)

The right-hand navigation gets it right though  :)

A pleasure.  It's excellent content and I reckon checking some links is worth the eyestrain time and effort.

I shall feel especially thanked when S+S's mgmt team get the gen that maybe 5% of people with AIDS still get CMV retinitis and 3-4% of Americans (and the rest of us North hemisphere people) have poor vision ... I hate to see a hot man shoe-horn himself into too-tight trousers, that's what small text feels like to me, if you can't read it,  it's missing/mangled, to spot which was the request in the frst post, so not really a design point but a fundamental.  Variable text size, if it works for the NY Times, it's should will work here.

Keep up the good work.

Missing content in Depressions - What else may help with depression? (navigation and title only)

https://www.poz.com/basics/hiv-basics/hiv-depression

Note to Tim: the section on psychotherapy don't really reflect the evidence base on cognitive behavioural therapy v other types of psychotherapy, eg the HTA did a systematic review which found it more beneficial etc

Matt:

Thanks for another good (or is that bad?) find.

And thanks for the feedback re the cognitive behavioural therapy discussion.  While I wrote and maintain the vast majority of the "lessons" on AIDSmeds, our depression lesson was actually written by Columbia University's Laura Pinsky, MSW.  I'll forward your comment to her for consideration.

Again, whatever technical or editorial feedback you provide, either during this critical post-switch time or in the future, is always helpful. We can never have too many knowledgable eyes on the labyrinth of info that is AIDSmeds.

Cheers Matt,
Tim

I do believe the IE7 error comes from bad parsing of some Javascript (Ray, you can turn the error warnings off somewhere...).

More important

You can't change the text size in IE5 and 6

Matt,

Actually, I thought the size of the font could be enlarged. Go to the toolbar on top of IE6, click "VIEW", and then click on "TEXT SIZE"  Gives you five different options...Unless I am mistaken. I thought I used that before, when I had IE 6

Matt, let's start a new thread about font size, to discuss possible options.  I've started one in here.

Yes & no.  The URL is the old static one, but the page itself is the new DB-generated page (actually, all our pages are still "static," but get compiled by templates + database info, then published as SHTML pages).  There's some sort of server-side href system that let's us use the old URLs, even though the new pages have numerical URLs.  In this way, if we ever change the newer numerical page file names, the old URLs will always work.

Peter

Message edit:  oops, I foolishly uploaded the old AM lesson pages to the new server using the same /lessons/ folder yesterday morning, foiling the internal redirect system.  It's been fixed now.

Searching forums by key word produces a list of interesting posts.  When you finish reading one and hit the back button, you get a "page has expired" message which forces you to have to re-enter your search parameters, if you can remember them.  Would be nice if this fucntioned better!

Great site, keep up the good work!  ;)

I'm not sure if this is of issue or not either pre or post upgrade.

When I am signed in as myself, I am able to see my own email address in my user profile. Due to the usage of 'bots' on the net for spamming purposes, et al, I'd like to make sure that its visibility is suppressed to anyone other than myself or website monitors. However, I do not seem to be having any success in determining if it is the case currently. I know that when signing up it is necessary to have an email and I am ok with that. But, the only location I see where I can manipulate that address only allows me to change it to something else, not hide it. Am I the only person currently who can see my email address or is it visible currently to any member of the site? Is it possible to suppress this post sign-up?

Thanks

Marc  :)

Marc -- you are the only one (besides the moderators) that can see it.  "Bots" definitely can't see it.
