What do you know about Montréal ?
« on: June 28, 2006, 01:33:40 am »
Hi all,

Knowing that many of you are coming to Montréal in August, I was wondering what kind of knowledge of our city is yours and what are you expecting from your journey in French Canada ?

au plaisir,

Fere jacques.

When I was a little boy I read Robert Louis Stevenson's Kidnapped.  That was 50 years ago so my memory isn't so good but it seems to me, that some of the story took place in Montreal.  I might be wrong about that but what I remember are some cliffs and the British were attacking the French, maybe, and they had to scale these cliffs which they did and they won the battle. But did they win the war? And what war? I don't know. Maybe I'm getting some things mixed up here, so, yes, I would love a history of Montreal, who got there first, the French or the British?; why Montreal? (Royal Mountain?  is there a mountain there?), what is its stragic advantages? Did the French have a western movement (a 'manafest destiny' ala USA? or were they more tolerant of the native Indians?).   and whatever happened to Pierre Tradeau?  And his wife?

As you can see, I'm somewhat ignorant of my neighbor to the North and there are a lot of gaps in what I do know.  So yes, I would love a seminar.  Will you be my teacher?

I've never been to Montreal, though we were supposed to go when I was a kid for the Olympics (forget which year).

Beyond that, the only other bit of info is what I read on one of the links provided in the information thread about AMG

Quote
Montreal is located at 45°30 N / -73°36 W. It is the largest city in Quebec and the second largest in Canada, with a metropolitan population of 3,359,000. Montreal is one of two large islands in this part of the St. Lawrence River (the other, Île Jésus, includes Laval and several other communities) and its highest point, Mount Royal, is 761 ft/ 232m high. The entire island of Montreal became a single municipality on January 1, 2002 although this has been reversed recently in the case of several of the suburbs.

Seeing a new city, experiencing the culture, and checking out the people (I love to people watch) is what I love about travelling.  Soon, I'll get to do that in Montreal.   :)

Robert...

I think the battle you are referring to was actually waged in Quebec City, a side trip of the Montreal Gathering.  It was waged on the Plains of Abraham, google that and you might find what you are looking for.  The English flanked the French and two very famous Generals were lost in that battle.

Montreal is a port city, a city of islands.  It has a distinctly European feel and parts of Montreal look very much like Paris.  The Notre Dame Cathedral is breathtaking, as is the original in Paris.

There is a 'mountain' in the center of Montreal, its called Mont Royal.  On the top of that Mont Royal is St Joseph's oratory which is a 'holy' place in history where miracles and healings were once performed by a man named Brother Andre.  You can view downtown Montreal and the harbor from the vantage point of the Oratory.

Just a few tidbits....the tourist guides we have for the gathering explain things much better than I.  The Canuck is tour guiding in Quebec City, you will be amazed by the Fort there, and the Chateau Frontenac...mmmm..

Sae is correct, this battle referred by Robert was in Quebec City ( Les Plaines d' Abraham ). Generals Wolfe ( could be mixing up this one with another general ) ( British ) and Montcalm ( French ) lost thier lives during this battle won by the British, we became afterwards the subject of his Majesty and a British territory. The French were the first ( 1534 ) and until the battle mentioned above it was a French territory. That's why Quebec is still French.

The mountain you referred to ( Mt. Royal ) isn't a big mountain by any means. Up North you have the Appalaches which are the equivalent Rockies of the East, yet not as majestuous. You can have a nice overview of the whole city in a park near the Oratory.

Quebec City was founded in 1608...and will be celebrate his 400th in 2008....Montreal is about 25-30 years younger. This is also the Capital of the province.

Rab...the Montreal Olympic were in 1976. Bruce Jenner ( USA ) won the decathlon...and Nadia Comaneci ( Romanian ) was the big star of these olympics...and the first to have several perfect 10 in gymnastics.

Robert...Pierre-Elliott Trudeau died in 2000 or 2001 from a prostate cancer ( he was in his early eighties if I remember correctly ). His younger son died a few years before in an avalanche while skiing in the Rocky Mountains...his body has never been found. His ex-wife Margaret is living in Vancouver and re-married several years after her divorce with Trudeau.

It's full of Frenchie separatists that forced French on everyone, which resulted in all the major businesses moving to Toronto.  The city has been in decline ever since.  That's all I know.   :P  ;D  Is it true?

Cliff,

There's only a few companies who left when the first separatist government was elected in November 1976 and that's it, it was 30 years ago. Since then we had two referendums both lost by the separatists, there's no indication either they would win another one, quite the contrary actually.

The city has been in declined for several reasons after the 1976 Olympic and mostly for financial problems, but it has changed for the better in the late '80s , and getting better since then too although there are still a lot to do. Yet, this certainly one of the most interesting city in North America, very cultural and a lot of fun. This is also a rather safe city for its size.

My only exposure to Montreal and Quebec City was back in 1968.  I absolutely loved it.  I can hardly wait to return to both of these fantastic cities.  I remember the warmth of the the people I met and it was the first time I ever experienced Fondue.  It as remained a favorite of my entire family ever since.  Looking forward to exposing Thom to the European flavor (but I have told him he cannot wear his old army uniform).  Until Montreal, hugs.  Ric and Thom

Hey Claude,

I was only kidding....that's what my Canadian friends (from Toronto and Vancouver) told me when I mentioned that I was going to Montreal (a little city rivalary).  Although I kinda knew about the businesses moving to Toronto bit, cause I worked on a deal with the Bank of Montreal in Toronto.  I asked someone how can the Bank of Montreal be based in Toronto and they explained that alot of businesses were scared that Quebec would break away so they moved their headquarters to Toronto.

Cliff,

I didn't take it as you were kidding and neither as if you were rude. I simply thought you had a misconception of the situation, that's all.   ::)

As mentioned in my original message, most of the companies who moved did it 30 years ago when they tought Quebec would separate from Canada. Personally I'm against it and wouldn't like it one bit.

This will be my seventh visit...I absolutely love this city!  There is so much to see and do..and the food is fabulous.  This will be only the second time for me to go to Quebec City...very different, but well worth the time.  The icing on the cake (not to be confused with the maple syrup discussion in a related post) is that I will meet some of you there.  If this is your first time....plan for a wonderful time in this city!

Hi Robert,

I guess that coming to Montréal and not meeting Jacques is like going to Paris and missing the Eiffel tower !
So perhaps I should show myself at the gathering just to allow all of you to go back home with an unforgettable souvenir.

Jacques,

I love to eat fondue as well and one of my favorite meal besides Asian food...I don't know a place where we can eat some in Montreal, at least not that I can remember but could be easy to find out..but know a great place for that in Quebec City.

What type of fondue did you experience ? Is it the one with cheese ( Fondue Suisse ), Chinoise ( very thin slice of beef - other meat and/or seafood are also possible- cooked in a type of beef broth with onions, red wine,etc.. ) or the fondue Bourguignonne ( beef cubes and cooked in oil ) ?

I'm just curious as this is the first time I hear from an American who knows about this.  :P

The Canuck,

We had both Fondue Suisse and Fondue Bourguignonne.  In fact, Thom and I make both several times a year at home and there is a fondue restaurant in one of the Milwaukee suburbs.

We need to find a place in Montreal.  We would love to try Chinoise.  It sounds wonderful.  Anyone else interested?

Until Montreal, hugs from us both.  Ric & Thom

Ric,

Yes you must try it. I'm sure you'll love it and personally I think this is much better than the Bourguignonne one.

By the way Ric, '' Chinoise '' means '' Chineese '' and don't why they called it that way as there's nothing Chineese about this, nothing at all.  :)

I plan to learn a lot more, if our stupid library will ever re-open!  It's been closed for 2 years for remodeling.   It's supposed to be open again on July 11th, so hopefully I can check out some books on Montreal.

I don't know about you guys, but I NEED THIS TRIP desperately.   You know, something to make you know you're still alive (since there doesn't seem to be much sex in my life these days).

I need this trip and for several reasons.

#1 I'm looking forward to meet all the attendees

#2 I need a vacation because I worked a lot in the last 7-8 months. I have to be away from my phone, computer, home, etc.. for awhile. It explains why originally I was supposed to arrive on the 17th, changed it for the 16th and finally for the 15th.

#3 I want to have fun.

This is July 1st Alan...so mid-August isn't that far away now...hang on.  ;)

Everytime I go to Montreal I stay in the Village (usually at Auberge Cosy at Beaudry Metro).  There is a nice restaurant one block down from there called Restaurant d'Independent (this is an approximation) and they always have fondue on the menu (cook at the table, thin slices of beef and other things.)  It's one of the places where I think the escargot is heavenly (I like it best at La Piazetta in the Village because it is combined with camambert cheese... scrumptious.)  There are many other things besides the fondue (which is the most popular at this restaurant...it is very continental and French.)

Many thanks for the information. I never tried that restaurant but I think I know which one it is. It'll be easy to find.

Ric...it seems we found a place close to the Hotel for a good Fondue Chinoise.  :-X

I know this place very well since the very first '' La Piazetta '' restaurant originated from Quebec City about 20 years ago. This is more recent in Montreal and love that place a lot. You should try one one with shrimps and add in extra artichocke hearts ( not sure if that was the right english term for this ). This is pretty good and fairly inexpensive too.

We have been talking a lot about food lately...I must say good food and wine is a great pleasure of mine, and it looks I'm not the only one here.   :P

Coming from Kentucky, I am always excited about breakfast (dejuener) in Montreal.  I never miss it when I go there.  I love Eggspectation (there are several-- my favorite is downtown between the Peal and Guy-Concordia metro stops.  In the Village, there is Chez Cora (another chain--and only open until 2 pm) on Sainte Catherine a few blocks from the hotel.  The Eggs Benedict can be had numerous ways all of them fabulous.  Additionally, the crepes are wonderful.  Both restaurants have a Construction Pancake that is an artery clogging but magnficant tower of pancakes, bacon, sausages... and may I add REAL VERMONT MAPLE SYRUP (not the imposter found in most  American restaurants.)

Save room for breakfast!

To all,

I would sincerely appreciate meeting you at the gathering. The problem is that I'm unexpectedly busy this summer. Actually I'm moving this week. The new house I bought is some kind of a ruin and everything have to be redone. Lot of work for  several months  :(  Moreover my mother also moved recently and as she  is very pertubed (she is 87years old) I must help and take care of her very closely. My situation is not easy to manage at the present time.
So, I don't know yet if I'll be able to go to he gathering. I cannot take any decision now but I hope that I will be able to escape from that mess at least for a day in August .
For now  I have to unplug and pack my computer, so I won't be seeing you for a week or two.  :'(

au revoir

Jacques

Hello Jacques,

Good luck with the moving and all the work you must do on the new house. Hope things will go for the best with your mom as well.

That would be great if you can find at least a free evening during the gathering, whether it would be the '' Pub Crawl '' on the 17th or the '' Meet & Greet '' on the 18th.

Au revoir Jacques et bonne chance,

The Canuck
