Hello everyone
« on: May 12, 2011, 05:43:02 pm »
For the most part in the three months since my AIDS diagnosis everything has been ok.  I've been seeing
someone for about a month, and even though he's still scared of my AIDS it's been going ok otherwise.  You'd
figured showing him a posting by Ann would have solved that, but you know men can be stupid and stubborn sometimes.

The beginning of May I noticed under my right arm was sore, I said something to my doctor, and since it wasn't swollen or red (not sure why he questioned if it was red), he said to take some Motrin and let him know if it got worse.  Well it didn't, I had just started a new job and put it down to that.  A week later it started swelling and last week it was hurting like mad.  Last week I had an ultrasound on it, and tomorrow I go for a biopsy.  The doctor that did the ultrasound  said it looks like a swollen lymph something.

I should say that when I had a mammogram (the first one I ever had.) the end of March there was a spot on my left breast, but after a second mammogram that doctor said it was nothing to worry about and to go back in six months for another one.

I have to add that the guy I'm seeing has been a prince with all of this crap going on with me, although    this is the first thing that has me worried and scared since my AIDS diagnosis.

Well thanx for letting me ramble on.

Hi Michelle,

I like reading that your doc wants you back in for another mammogram in six months. That's wise.

Does the doc who read your films know you're HIV positive? And, does your ID doc know of the swelling/discomfort under your arm?

Congrats on having a guy in your life! Sweet. Makes some of the other crap you're wading through a tad more tolerable when you've got someone pulling for you.

I think you're both brave---you to fall in love so soon after dx and him to learn enough not to bolt.

So, let us know what the biopsy results are, please.

Em

Update on me.
I HATE DOCTORS.  Emeraldize, yes my ID doc knows of the swelling and stuff, due to medicaid I have to go through him for stuff first.  Yes the other docs know of my aids.  My doctor is connected to the hospital here, so any doctor I go to for anything has access to my records, and has to call my ID doctor.

My mommy picked me up and we went for the biopsy, and after that lady took an ultrasound, (she does that before any biopsy) she said it's gotten bigger and she wouldn't be able to do a regular biopsy. We drove around all day from one doctor to another and ending up at a surgeons office.

Monday I have to be at the hospital and 6am and they are going to knock me out and have to do a biopsy that way.  I don't know the difference, but if they knock me out I don't care what they do to me.  I asked them if they would just take it out then.  The doctor said no, he has to wait for the results of the biopsy before he can do that.

He said he it is an out patient procedure.  My ID doc is out of town until sunday, but he is aware of what is going on.  He called me earlier today and told me to take an overnight bag just in case.  I guess since my  he may want me to stay the night.

The sucky thing is, I was supposed to be going on a bike rally next weekend but I don't think I'm going to make it.  Oh well the season is just starting and there will be plenty more.  One of my brothers friends offered to take me to the zoo, and the new Vin Diesel movie next weekend while my ole man is at the rally.  Is that sweet or what?

Have a good weekend, I won't be back on the computer until probably tues.  Other then my having  tonsils out and having tubes put in my ears when I was 6, I`ve never been in the hospital and don't know how I will feel monday.

Hi KK: In the off chance you pop back in, your outpatient procedure will not be as tough as your tonsilectomy. I had what you're having and thankfully it was negative. We're looking forward to learning your biopsy results and it's great that you've got your mom, friends and beau to be supportive. Best wishes. Em

Thanx Emeraldize.  I was five when I had my tonsils out, I just remember being able to eat cool whip and popsicles all the time.

On the good news it's supposed to rain all weekend during the bike rally ;D.  I don't know if it's good or bad that I like that news.

Well, isn't that the best that is what you remember?

We'll look for your update and what type of biopsy they're doing, too.

A short update.  I hurt and vicodine hasn't kicked in yet.

Went for biopsy monday as scheduled.  They were checking for lymphonia and other stuff. It turned out to be severely infected.  They knocked me out and when i came to they told me I was staying until next day.

WRONG i went home today.  They gave me some major antibiotics twice a day by iv.( It burned when it touched my hand.).  Monday I didn't get any of my aids meds. (i was pissed).  Since I wasn't scheduled to stay the night it took all night fo r the order to be filled from the hosp. pharmacy.  i got the medicine at 2am tues. but the doctor told the nurse to just wait until tues for me to take my aids stuff so they didn't have to wake me up.

tues they didn't send my isentress, today they didn't send my truvada.  stupid pharmacy.  the floor i was on doesn't carry those as regular meds in their stash so they have to order them from their own pharmacy.
I did end up with them, just real later then i normally take them.

My brother is learning how to change the packing and dressing on me tomorrw.  they can't put stitches in because it has to drain, so it's open.  I can't take a bath or shower for 2 weeks, so it's sponge bath, and my step-mom got me a shower cap that has shampoo in it.  If I like it I'll get more.

Of course I'm a wimp when it comes to pain and got sick and passed out when they changed the packing tuesday. :'(   they did it 3 times tuesday, and once today.  From here on in the packing only needs changed once a day, and the dressing at least 2x a day.  I may try and change the dressing myself tonight, that didn't seem to bother me, just the packing part.  Besides my brother is out partying with his friends.  there's a visiting home nurse coming out to teach my brother how to do it, and what to do if I pass out again.  It didn't hurt as today as yesterday, but the nurse said every day it will be less packing and less hurt.  I think she's only trying to make me feel better.

I'm doing better.  I learned my pain threshold is a little better then I thought.   Everyone at the hospital was nice and helpful.  I'll heal and  I guess this probably isn't the last thing that will pop up, so I can't complain to much.  My doctor said the rest of the tests will take up to 6 weeks to come back.  He did say he thinks it's MAC, I didn't write down the name just the initials, although he said it may be under MEI if I look it on an AIDS site under opportunistic infections, will check that out tomorrow.

I even had a nurse try and pick me up, but I  declined since she is a she.  She knew me  back in my "experiment"days (not quite sure how to explain it, I hope I didn't offend anyone).  We had some time to catch up on old times and decided when I got better we'd get together and rip up the town like we used to.  Of course 20 years ago we could do that.  Although the one male nurse was hot.

Have a good week.
Michelle ;D

Thanks for catching us up! Sounds like it's been a rough week, so glad you got in and got the surgery.

Good to know your brother's helping out, too.

So, based on what you wrote, no biopsy? or was there biopsy along with treating the infection?

Hope your visiting nurse is nice and that you're able to rest up.

Until you're past the pain, try to get ahead of it with the vicodin before you hurt, chasing pain is not fun.

Keep us posted. I'll fish around for the info your doc directed you to--save you a little time and add it to this post.

It's not MEI, it's MAI. Mycobacterium avium-intracellulare. It's more-less another way of saying MAC. It's not listed in our OI section as MAI, it's listed as MAC.

Michelle, I'm really glad they caught this. It can be serious if not treated, but now that you're on treatment you should be ok and once your CD4s go higher, it shouldn't be a concern any more.

I had a surgery a few years ago under my left arm - but my case was pretty boring in comparison to yours. I had a bit of breast tissue under my arm (I called it my third tit :D ) and it had to be removed because it kept swelling and being really painful every time I had my period. While they were in there they also removed some lymph tissue as it was inflamed, but it turned out to not have any serious problems going on.

They sewed the incision, but kept a drain tube in it for about 24 hours. After they pulled it out and added another stitch, I didn't have any further problems. Oh - one weird thing - I lost sensation in the area for several years and I stopped sweating under that arm pit for a few years too. It's all come back now though. You might experience something similar but it's nothing to worry about.

By the way, if you can, don't try to do your dressing yourself. I tried it once when the home nurse called to say she'd be really late (I needed to go out when she said she'd be there) and it was really difficult and I kinda messed it up. The nurse got there earlier than she thought she'd be able to and she told me off good-style for messing it up. Evidently the way I'd taped it up could have made the incision split open. She also said that trying to do something like that one-handed could open me up to infection because of having to put stuff down and hold bits in my teeth. Who knew?

Hehehe... I don't think you've offended anyone by relating your nurse experience. I think several of us here had those experimental days and some of us still do. ;D It's always nice to be thought of as attractive and dating material no matter who is trying to pick you up - as long as they're a nice person, of course. I hope you two have fun rekindling your friendship.

Anyway, I'm really glad they caught this. I hope you heal quickly and get well soon!

BTW, if your bf has any specific questions, feel free to ask either via PM or here in the forum. He could even become a member himself if he wants to - he'd be welcome. (just not in the women's forum! ;) )

Hugs,
Ann

They did do biopsy also.  Lymphnomia came back negative, and a slew of other stuff came back negative to.
The rest of the tests will take up to 6 weeks to come back.

Yes I got the initials wrong, I remembered the MAC, but not the MAI.  I was close, my mom looked it up.

The visiting nurse today was nice, she said everything looked good.  My brother on the other hand, well his
stomach isn't what he thought it was.  He almost passed out when the nurse was changing the packing.  He has friend whose wife is a nurse and we're going to see if she can help out.  Medicaid will only pay for the visiting nurse so many times.

There's a lady in my dad's church that is coming out this weekend to help
also.  Which I find ironic because my dad and step-mom didn't want anyone in their church to know about my AIDS.  They are real religious and worry more about what the church will think about them and less about the AIDS itself.  Most of the people in their  church would be fine with it.  It's their thinking that's bad.

Well have a good night all

Michelle

Hi Michelle,

That's good news that you're getting negative results back and hopefully the whole lot will be the same.

It's got to be a relief to know you've got more support available and possibly another nurse.

Hope you're comfy with the pain meds.

Vicodin is my best friend, and the 500mg antibiotic pill.  I figured right now I am taking roughly 6000mg of pills a day.  That includes 2 vicodin every 4 hours from 7am-11pm (No wonder I'm so tired) and my AIDS meds.  Grandma calls me a walking pharmacy.

  The pain is doing better.

Although I am single once again.  He doesn't think he can have a relationship with  someone who is going to be sick a lot, and someone that he can't have sex with.  So I will give him the first reason due to the fact he hasn't been around a lot of people with AIDS, although I did tell him that as my CD4 cells go up, my oi's will be less and less.

I did throw the second reason back in his face.  It was his decision to not have sex even with a condom, and I just had to remind of him that.

My brother says it's the guys loss not mine( I should find someone like my brother).  I think I'm going to stay single for awhile.

P.S. Justin Timberlake is host of Saturday Night Live tonight, he's my boy toy crush, well worth staying up late for.

I see the end of the world came and went.

My brother just got done with his torture on me. :'(   (I think he secretly likes putting me in a little pain).  He told me he will take me to my one doctors appt. tomorrow so I don't have to drive.  I have an appt. with my ID Dr. in the morning, and an appt. with my gyno. guy in afternoon.  I couldn't reschedule either of them.  My dad walked in my room this afternoon when she was doing the packing and he promptly ran out, don't know if was what she was doing to me, or the boob show he got.  I think he was blushing though, poor daddy he forgets that his daughter is 45.

The nurse that came out today said it looks good.   When the nurse comes out Tues. she will measure how deep it is. That sounds kind of yucky. >:(

I wrote my ex a letter.  I didn't send it, but I felt better afterwards.  My step-mom thinks I should tell him, I haven't found a reason to tell him.  My theory is that he lost rights to know about my health when he broke up with me.

I went on one of those dating sites for positive people and it came up with less then 20 guys in my area.  Most were feeling sorry for themselves and I quickly avoided them. There was one guy that sounded good, but he has 4 kids (to me that's scary since I have none).  So i'm thinking single is a good thing, if I find someone to date then good, if not then better.

Can't decide if I want to buy Lady Gaga or Kid Rock's new cd.

Michelle :)

Good update! Reads as if you're healing up nicely. That "how deep" notationi would have me wincing a tad. So, what's it measured with? A stick, a needle, a ....well, fill us in when you get filled in, heh?
