The Lady is Free

For now.

Aung San Suu Kyi, the democratically elected leader of Burma has been freed from 6 years of house arrest imposed by the nation's loathesome military junta.

Suu Kyi (who is known to the people of Burma as "the Lady") has spent 15 of the last 21 years in detention. Her National League for Democracy won national elections held in 1990. The military refused to accept these results and has imposed a regime of the most dreadful oppression ever since.

Suu Kyi is an incredibly inspiring figure. Patient, determined and utterly committed to non-violent resistance of oppression she cuts a graceful figure in public life.

That said, the military junta which runs Burma is utterly ruthless. Under their rule Burma has slid into the most appalling decline and poverty. Dissidents are routinely imprisoned, tortured and killed. Ethinc minorities are brutally repressed. There is no guarantee that they will not return Suu Kyi to captivity should they feel she threatens their hold on power.

Yeah, I heard about this yesterday.  It really is a great thing (but like you said, "for now").
