Iowa City, Iowa (for grad school). A nice university town, plenty of hunky shirtless athletes to stare at currently.

But: Grew up in Bombay (Mumbai)
Went to college in Western Massacusetts
Went to grad school in the Boston area
And now I'm a Midwesterner. Who would have thunk?

Her finely-touched spirit had still its fine issues, though they were not widely visible. Her full nature, like that river of which Cyrus broke the strength, spent itself in channels which had no great name on the earth. But the effect of her being on those around her was incalculably diffusive: for the growing good of the world is partly dependent on unhistoric acts; and that things are not so ill with you and me as they might have been, is half owing to the number who lived faithfully a hidden life, and rest in unvisited tombs.

George Eliot, Middlemarch, final paragraph

Hi Paul...

  Nice topic for a thread!

For the past 24 years, I have resided in Northern California in the Sierra Nevada foothills. Originally the "Gold Rush" area (1849), and now gaining notoriety for some pretty fine wines (with 25 or so wineries) and fabulous fruit orchards. As we are very close to South Lake Tahoe, and it's casinos, we have an interesting mix of nature-folks and gamblers, both.

If you travel west, you run into the State Capitol, Sacramento, nice town, lots of trees.

In the time I've lived here, I think our population has tripled (or something like that), and alas, much of the original charm is being transformed into the typical Walmart, Home Depot, Office Max sprawl. It's quite a shame, really.

I continue to seek refuge in the forests so close to me, and hold on to the joy that is found amongst the cedars and pines.

  Thanks for asking!

Love,

Zephyr :-*

Well, in the Southeast Corner of Arizona; about 15 miles away from Tombstone.  I was going to link some photos, and found this one on the front page of our local paper this morning.  Son-of-a-gun!!!

In this file photo taken June 5, 2006, and provided by MassResistance shows a window display marking gay pride week and featuring two male mannequins, with one wearing a gay pride rainbow flag at Macy's department store in downtown Boston. MassResistance called attention to the display and within days the mannequins were removed. It was the latest victory for a group dedicated to battling what it characterizes as the aggressive gay and lesbian movement in Massachusetts. (AP Photo/MassResistance)

So for the sceinery, here are a few more.

The attached photo below was taken south of town, on the road to Mexico, which is about 6 miles from this photo location.  Oh yes, the car is mine.

In Love.

I was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY.  Lived in NY all of my 42 years and just this year moved to Kansas City, MO to be with my love -- John (kcmetroman).  It's Amazing how far a girl will travel just to be with "the one."  Life in KC is much different than NY, but I'm adjusting and learning to walk a bit slower these days -- not always rushing about like most NYers do.  It's a wonderful life. ;D

Good Morning everyone !!!

The sun has just come up here over Bass Strait. It's a crisp and cool morning and we're hoping for rain (liquid sun) here in the bush.

It's wonderful to hear from so many family members. I'm enjoying reading posts from around the world, I hope you are too.

Have the best day or night depending on where you're living/traveling.

Cheers
Paul

I live in Gadsden, Alabama, the "Queen City of the Coosa" (no wisecracks!)

It's about 65 miles north of Birmingham.

I have lived in Birmingham, AL ('70's)
                    Tulsa, OK ('80's)
                     Atlanta, GA (the AIDS era)

Our big tourist attraction in Gadsden is Noccalula Falls

The LEGEND OF NOCCALULA
Originally known as Black Creek Falls, the legend as written by Mathilde Bilbro says that "long ago, on a mountain summit within sight and sound of a rushing waterfall, lived a great Indian Chief whose young daughter, Noccalula, was famed far and wide for her beauty and loveliness of character. Many gallant braves sought the old chief for the hand of Noccalula, but only on was favored by the girl's father, a rich chief of a powerful neighboring tribe, who had much to offer in exchange: wampum, horses, blankets. Vainly Noccalula pleaded that her heart was already given to a young brave of her own tribe. But this young warrior, though noted for his skill and valor, possessed but little in worldly goods.

The old chief refused to listen and ordered his daughter to make ready for the marriage he had arranged. What was a maiden's silly fancy against many horses, much wampum, and union with another strong tribe? The girl's lover was driven from the tribe, and a marriage agreement was made with the neighboring chief.

The wedding day came and a great feast was prepared. In silence Noccalula allowed herself to be arrayed in festive wedding robes. It was incredible!......To be sold to a stranger by the father she loved! Her chosen lover forever banished! Overcome with grief, she quietly slipped away from the merrymakers during the festivities.......the soft rhythmical rush of waters called her.....a moment she stood poised upon the brink of the yawning chasm. One leap--and her troubles were over.

Heartbroken, the remorseful father gave the great cataract his daughter's name and since that day the falls has been called Noccalula."

Ok, Paul, add another state.  Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Landed here via:

Portland, OR (born and raised)
Lousiville, KY (actually Ft Knox for basic training)
San Antonio, TX (military job training - part 1)
Denver, CO (military job training - part 2)
Ft. Devens, MA (about 30 miles west of Boston)
Ft. Lewis, WA (about 40 miles south of Seattle)
and finally Seattle, WA

It's been quite a journey.  I'm amazed at how truly global this group of people is.  WOW!!!

Weeeelllll....

If we're going to give a "where I'm from - the history", I'm gonna join in, dangitall!

1962 Born in Fort Wayne Indiana.
1964 Moved back to parents home state and went to grade school in Garfield Heights, Ohio.
Went to Junior High in Beford Heights, Ohio.
Went to Senior High in Solon, Ohio, graduated in 1980.
Went to KSU and stayed on in Kent, Ohio, for a few years.

Lived at 99th and Broadway, Manhattan, for a year 1984/85.
Moved upstate to New Paltz.
Beacon, New York.
Wappingers Falls, New York.
Poughkeepsie, New York.
Hopewell Junction, New York.

Then I moved across the ocean to this Rock in April of 1991 and the rest, as they say, is herstory. LOL I've lived in the same town the whole time I've been here (15 years) and it's the longest I've ever lived anywhere. Even here I've moved quite a few times and the flat I'm living in now is the longest time I've lived in one house ever. (eight years)

Must be time to move! :D

I live in Guerneville California. West Sonoma County.  Population 2,440. About an hours drive north of San Francisco.

The first picture is the Russian  River at the end of my street. (Sometimes, in the winter it’s at my door.)
Actually my home is behind the trees to the left.

The second picture is Goat Rock. If you follow the river from my home for 18 miles to the west, you wind up here at the Pacific Ocean. Gorgeous places to walk or just sit and feel the moisture that’s in the air on your face.

UK. Surrey, technically, for the postman's benefit...but south london's spitting distance really, just across the park. Hydrangea's just blooming, different colour this year than last &  the thames was sparkling today

growing up we were nomadic( sort of) so home was everywhere and nowhere in particular..these days I stay still, more or less, but the sea and cliffs pull occasionally.

big shout out to the rest of the viral massive, on my doorstep, almost, it seems.. :)

Hi all, I'm in a town called Bolton about 12 miles north of Manchester, England. I get the best of both worlds, the countryside right on my doorstep and the convenience of the city 30 minutes away and easy access to anywhere in Britain. I can't claim to be a globetrotter because I've never lived more than 5 miles away in all of my 46 years, could it be a sign of stunted development that i don't really want to either??? LOL.  A couple or three holiday homes might be the order of the day if I ever get rich - oh well dream on!

Keep well, John.

Good Morning AM Family !

It's a very cold (for us) morning here along the coast of the Great Southern Ocean, 4C. I imagine it's a bit warmer where many of our family are residing at the moment. It was a glorious sunrise over the ocean though and the fireplace is roaring away.
My heart is also warmed by the many responses from around the Globe. Thanks everyone. We really are the world.
Have the best day, or evening wherever you are on the planet.

Cheers
Paul

PS   As of the most recent post we have folks from 5 continents, 12 countries and 27 states from the USA (plus DC). Is there anyone from South America ?

Official slogan? Albuquerque! It's a Trip!, and that my dears can and should be taken on many different levels. I've also lived in New York, (born there, Brooklyn), Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Minnesota, and Utah. Always wanted to live in New Zealand...

Hi Everyone.

I live in West New York, NJ (it is a real town).  Surprisingly right outside of NYC   I like it a lot.  I work in Midtown NYC.

I live in Martinez, California which is about 25 miles east/northeast of San Francisco on the Carquinez Strait (part of the Sacramento/San Joaquin River Delta, which flows into San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean).

It is the seat of government for Contra Costa County, and is shockingly lowbrow for the Bay Area.  While towns in Sonoma and Napa Counties are known for their premium viticultural areas, Martinez is justly famous for the diverse variety of quaint antique shops and meth labs scattered around town.

One amusing fact about Martinez:  the downtown McDonald's closes at 5 pm each and every day (and is closed on Sunday), while the liquor store in the Safeway parking lot proudly keeps its doors open until 11 p.m. daily (midnight on weekends) to provide our local alcoholics, crack whores and tweakers some much-needed relief from life's daily grind.

Bet you won't hear THAT from the local Chamber of Commerce!

( Ray, ever go to Molly Goodhead's in Ozona?)  thanks, again, chris

I see I didn't give many details earlier.

I was born in eastern North Carolina, in Sampson Co.  Lived there until I went to the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill for 3 years.  During my Junior year, I lived in Montpellier, France and attended school there.  After I graduated, I moved into Durham for about 2 years and then moved into the woods of Northeastern Orange County, NC, on a 10 acre lot with hardwoods and 3 creeks.  I stayed there for 14 years, before moving back into Durham 7 years ago.   During that time, I traveled a lot with work, visiting London, UK, quite often.  Last summer, I did a 6 week train trip through Western Europe, interviewing people on DV along the way about freedom, gay marriage and HIV/AIDS.  This was done in conjunction with 1 Giant Leap, a musical group (and a fantastic musical and ethnological documentary film that you really should see) from the UK.  During the filming, I visited Ireland, England, France, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Switzerland and Germany.  It is amazing how similar community is from one culture to the next (and that applies to all categories of communities).

Safe journeys!

Lexiva, Videx EC

About 18 other meds to manage my side-effects/concomitant issues like diabetes, renal insufficiency, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, etc.

Safe journeys!

Ce fut une belle aventure...
