started taking ARVs/possible side effects?

Hello everyone.

I have been prescribed ARVs today by my doctor after my consultation with her as she noted that my CD4 count is 315 - below the 350 to 1215 range I should be in.   I was given lamivudine + zidovudine and nevirapine.

Anyone knows what side effects should I expect aside from those that my doctor mentioned like rashes, fever?

Although this is a first line treatment, you should be watched fairly closely due to the possibility of AZT(Zidovudine) anemia. See this study:

Unless for some reason you have mutations (as determined by your geno and pheno tests) there are less toxic medications available.

You might want to ask why these medications were chosen, especially AZT, again.

In addition to asking about Zidovudine (AZT) be mindful that Nevirapine can cause liver problems. Keep a close eye on your LFTs.

Hello matty and veritas.

Thank you for your replies.  I will look into and inquire from the doctor about less toxic medications.  The meds I was prescribed as the usual ones given as first line treatment for those of us HIV-positive here in the Philippines.

I've been told to be on guard against anemia and I am due for a CBC count on May 25.  As for the problem it can pose on my liver, I will also ask the doctor about it.

Sounds like a plan Aries.

It's not uncommon for older medications such as AZT and Nevirapine to be first line choices in developing nations for reasons of cost. These medications work very well when it comes to supressing HIV infection but as you're discovering they can have unpleasant side effects which are less common on newer medications.

Careful monitoring is the key.

Thanks for the added info.  I hope my country has the newer medications.  ARVs given to HIV positive individuals here for free.

ask your doctor about viraday, if it is available in the philippines... from what i have read this has less toxic effects than what you are taking and you only need to take this once a day
