Below are three poposals for you consideration. Please review and post your preference below. Voting will occur for a minimum of one week to avoid rate increases which have already occured since I first enquired about rates.
Golden Nugget
August 11 - 17
or
August 18 - 24
Wednesday and Thursday @ $55 per night
Friday and Saturday @ $95.00 per night
Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday @ $55.00 per night
Stratosphere
August 6 - 11
Wednesday $30.00 per night
Thursday, Friday, and Saturday @ $42.00
Sunday and Monday @ $30.00 per night
or
August 11 - 18
Wednesday @ $30.00 per night
Thursday, Friday, and Saturday @ $45.00 per night
Sunday and Monday @ $30.00 per night
Third option is to choose a hotel. Rather than holding group space, everyone would then search tour providers, such as Southwest, for a package deal from their city of departure.
-
Tough choice due to the 24hr beer bar and a Shark Tank Water Slide at Golden Nugget. But Stratosphere does have its "adults only" pool.
Due to the cheaper rates I'll have to go with...
STRATOSPHERE AUG. 6-11th
-Will
-
Stratosphere ! 6-11th
It is walking distance to " Snick's " ::)
Carl
-
We stayed at Stratosphere the last time and it was fine. It also is pretty centrally located between Glitter Gulch and The Strip. There is a quaint little 50s diner inside, along with other amenities.
The price is right, too.
So, I choose The Stratosphere and Aug. 6 - 11 works for me too.
HIUGS,
Mark
-
I like the 8/6-8/11 dates, so Stratosphere is my vote. These dates will allow Sid and I to celebrate our 20th on the 2nd somewhere (maybe the Grand Canyon) and then head on up to Vegas to be with you all.
Mike
-
Stratosphere, Aug. 6 - 11 is fine with me.
RAB ;D
Who wonders what the heck "Snicks" is. ???
-
I too vote for the Stratosphere, and the date doesn't matter.
-
Stratosphere is good spot. easy connection in all directions...got my vote... whatever date gets most votes...

Snick's is a Little BAR on south 4th street !
It is now the Oldest Gay bar in las vegas .
For Years the Red Barn was the leader in oldest ! ( I worked there for 8 years ! )
Anyway Snick's is a little dive , that I am looking forward to seeing some friends I have NOT seen
In 5 years ;)

I prefer being closer to the Strip, so that makes the Stratosphere option the better one for me. I have stayed many times at the Golden Nugget though and have always enjoyed it. I just love Vegas...so it really doesn't matter (and heaven knows how many years I have advocated it for one of our "gatherings.") Either August weekend will work for me with a slight preference for the earlier one.
I cannot attend the London AMG due to work commitments in May so I want to be certain to attend this gathering. I must admit that I really like the Blue Moon but it will not be appropriate for some of our members and it is much more important for us to be together!
Dennis... once again, my gratitude for your willingness to use your skills and connections to help coordinate these events for us.
Trying to "throw together" 3 days in Vegas before Christmas, so maybe I can scout out these options and some other attractions for us.
Gary

If no one objects, I will finalize arrangements with the Stratosphere for August 6 - 11 and post booking instructions after the holiday.
-
Thanks Dennis!

Awesome!

Perfect, absolutely perfect!!!
We have two friends (actually adopted family members) who live in Henderson and work in Las Vegas. We like to call them our "Get out of Jail Free Cards." Please don't ask, we won't tell. But, they will love to meet all of you. Barbara and Marc will have a riot with our group.
Thanks Dennis. You have done it again!
Hugs all, R&T

Terrific, I can't wait.
-
Terrific, I can't wait.
Of course we'll be seeing both you and Miss P. in London in May. Afterall, you voted for London (twice) and Miss P once (as her final destination vote).
I'd hate to think the London Committee is planning based on those votes, only to find out members intentionally skewed the vote.
-
London or Vegas we're all AMG! I better start packing I'm gonna be busy!
-

That's right. You'll find no discrimination on this side of the forums.
-
Jeez..I thought I asked you two to put each other on ignore.
Dennis we have no way of knowing for sure who will or will not make it to Vegas, people do change their minds at the last minute as we know from past experience...things change and destinations plans change as well.
I voted for London, but because of the time of year it's not possible for me to go..so does that mean I can't attend the one in Vegas just because I voted for London?...you have coordinated enough of these AMG's to know it doesn't work that way.
Dach if you are thiking of going to Vegas then that's fine, you have every right to post here..but if you are here just to wind Dennis up then please stop it now....thanks

Jan,
You know we would LOVE to see you in Vegas! I can't make London because of the May date but I know I am free for the August dates so I will be looking forward to whatever it is we are going to officially call the Vegas gathering. I certainly hope, and I do encourage, our members to support the London AMG and if possible to also join us in Vegas. The Vegas hotel is the one I believe you, RAB and Aztecan stayed in a few years ago. I have never been there (although countless trips to the city) so it will be exciting to see a new place.

Jan, I'd appreciate you also requesting that Dennis not personally bait me like he just did below. I'm a bit flabergasted that you didn't call him out on such a blatant disregard for the rules here at AIDSmeds. Fortunately I'm mature enough not to fall for such childish antics, but fair is fair as far as rules go.
Kindest regards,

Oh dear me, "fair" would probably involve something more than repeated warnings, but then I'm a strong believer in discipline. :)
-
I'll keep that in mind for next time.... ;D
While you believe in discipline I like to believe people will do the right thing when given a polite warning..I know, I know, you would think after 6 years here I would know better..I'm just a slow learner I guess and I need to toughen up~~sigh~~ ;).

will there is a good probability that the concierge himself will be the service you might seek

Not to mention one need not drive 150 miles OR pay $300 an hour for "room service" on the Strip! :)

Glad to see something official posted! I am going to be in Vegas next month from the 13th to the 16th...staying at the Blue Moon again. Is there anything anyone wants me to check out for our summer gathering while I am in town, let me know.
Will be attending the August gathering...can't get away from work for the May one.

Gary, since you are going soon, why don't you check into the possibility of finding the HIV community through the local ASO, which might also have connections in the local community for friendly places to gather together.

Happy to do so...who or what agency would I contact? Any ideas anyone?

The only agency I've been able to locate in Las Vegas is Aid for Aids Nevada

Oops! Sorry. Yes, simply reference AMG Group. The official group code is C-AMG in case the reservationist has trouble locating it.

Hey Jan,
Free or discounted tickets for the monorail are in the works. I should know more in the next week or so.
The closest station to the Stratosphere is behind the Sahara Hotel, which is across the street. The monorail will take you all the way down to the MGM Mirage.

New to the forums and fairly new to being poz (09/08), but u all have got me wanting to go to vegas and see and enjoy AMG --- hopefully, i can pull it off and be there to meet everyone. :-)
-
So can anyone fill me in on some of the structured things that take place at an AMG? Also, what time do things get rolling on the 6th? I am really wanting to make the trip.... If I stick to my goal and quit smoking on Feb 1 (the entire hospital campus I work at is going smokefree on March 1) I should be able to easily swing it. Thanks for any information.
-
Phil,
You should definately try to make it! Boston was my first and it, for me, was a life changing experience. You might review the old Boston AMG links to get an idea of what goes on. There are a few structured activities Dennis sets up, such as scavenger hunts, side tours, etc... and the Memorial is absolutely amazing. But most of all it's the life long friends you find that make it so memorable. Such a fantastic time!
Hope to see you there!
-Will
-
If I have the money when the time comes I'll definitely be going to this.
-
I just want to point out the gathering in Las Vegas is not THE official AMG.
AMG will take place in London from May 20-23.
The gathering in Las Vegas is primarily for those who are unable to make it to London. Although the Las Vegas gathering is not the official AMG, one can expect the Las Vegas gathering format to be similar to past AMGs with focus on an Aids Memorial taking place early Friday and the Meet & Greet Friday evening.
All details will be posted here... http://forums.poz.com/index.php?topic=30902.0 as they are finalized.
As always, input is welcome.

Did you have any trouble making the reservation? They found the group in their system without issue?
We'll get an arrivals thread going shortly.

It went really smooth. gave them the C-AMG code and she pulled it up with the correct rate. She said the rooms were on the 10thfloor and up, and we would have a view of the strip (or at least my room does). Check in at 3pm, checkout at 11am!
It took all of 4 minutes. I was pleasantly surprised.

Please let us know what you would like to see for the Las Vegas gathering meet & greet.
One option available to us at the hotel would be a catered affair at the top of the Tower. Another option would be to have an outdoor event on the 8th floor pool deck.
Food options range from a full sit down dinner, buffet, or light appetizers. Of course, a full service bar will be provided as in years past.
Other options include having the event offsite or doing away with the formality all together and making reservations for dinner somewhere.
Those who have been to AMGs in the past know what I'm capable of arranging. And if you haven't been, I welcome your ideas as well. Las Vegas lends itself to many possibilities for this event.

I kinda like the idea of having an outdoor event. I'm imagining the 8th floor pool deck, great views of Vegas in the evening, Margaritas, etc... Maybe even do a Luau theme complete with grass skirts and Leis, little drinks with Umbrellas in them, RAB doing the Hula...
But anytime you say "outdoor" in Vegas you have to wonder about the heat. Would the heat still be stifling in the evening? (It's not a pretty sight when my Anti-Wrinkle cream starts running).
Also, would they cater an event for us on the pool deck?
Just thinking aloud here....
-Will
-
I told Dennis I would try and personally check this out while visiting Vegas this weekend. I have been there in August several times and yes, it is torching hot in the day, somewhat less so in the evening. However, the pool areas usually have plenty of shaded and covered areas. I will look at the pool deck and see if it is the kind of place that is good for our meet and greet. Certainly, there are a multitude of options in Vegas. It would be convenient, however, to have a place right at our hotel. I'll have my laptop with me so I will report from Vegas.

They will cater an event on the pool deck. I know many pool areas in Vegas have misting systems. The heat was a concern of mine as well. I've been there in August and don't recall the heat being as bad in the evening. Also, the group mgr. advised there is usually a light breeze in the evening up there.
Continue to think out loud. This is exactly the feedback I'm looking for :)

Gary... your report is overdue

Yesterday was Valentines Day and today is Presidents Day and Las Vegas is mobbed with visitors! I tried to take a tour at Stratosphere this afternoon but the group sales department is out for the holiday. I will meet the woman (Janelle) who is handling our arrangements tomorrow and she will take me around to see the pool deck and some other things so that we can make some plans. I am hopeful that the Stratosphere facilities will meet our needs for the meet and greet (and perhaps even the memorial) because it will be much easier for our group that way.
I left Kentucky in the nick of time...eight more inches of snow yesterday. It is sunny and in the 60s here...much nicer. I return late Tuesday night.
...and yes Willy there will be a full report!

You're a doll Gary. I like the idea of having the memorial at the Stratosphere, provided they have a suitable area, and who better to scope the place out than you!
-Will
-
There is something called the Chapel in the Clouds. It is way up on the top (of course) and I feel fairly certain it is not free. I am going to ask about it.
-
Friends,
I spent about an hour with the Group Sales Manager at the Stratosphere Hotel and I can say that once again, Dennis has found a wonderful site for our gathering (albeit not the official AMG for 2010.) I was able to look at the banquet room that was proposed for the "Meet and Greet" and this room is perfect for us. It is located 107 stories above Las Vegas with breathtaking views. Restrooms are conveniently located nearby and even better it is in our host hotel! There are food and beverage minimums for a gathering of this sort (common in the business) and Dennis will tell us about that. It will be worth it in terms of convenience for our group.
I was not able to see the swimming pool area on the 8th floor as it is under renovation. It is a large area and a good place for regular gatherings. This being Las Vegas there is a optional topless pool for adults only on the 25th floor (not bottomless though!)
Our room reservation gets us free access to the tower where the visual attractions are. There is a world class restaurant on the top (fine dining- translate: expensive) and a cocktail lounge also up there with those breathtaking views. Once again, this being Vegas, those drinks will have premium prices but it will be worth an occasional splurge.
The hotel rooms top out at the 24th floor in case some of you fear great heights. The famous Stratosphere tower is separate from the hotel complex.
For those that do not like to do a lot of walking, it is possible to spend the entire time at the Stratosphere and be well entertained. There are plenty of restaurants including cheaper ones. Taxis are so easy in this city and some of us will have rental cars.
I hope you will consider joining us in Las Vegas this August. Keep watching this particular forum as Dennis will be posting more details. He will need a good idea of who is coming and who is willing to be a part of the group events to facilitate planning.
Gary :D
-
Thank you for checking things out for us, Gary.
So you would definitely suggest the tower banquet room rather than the pool deck? I was taking our smoker into consideration when thinking about a pool deck event.
The Top of the World restaurant is nice. I've eaten there for lunch, which is reasonable. $15 average for an entree. Dinner on the otherhand is is $35 and up.
Before I can begin any negotiations on the f&b I'll need a better idea on how many will be attending.
As soon as you can confirm your attendance, please do in this thread until we get our arrival thread in place.
Thanks,
Dennis
-
Thanks for doing the legwork Gary!
Hmmm, now I'm leaning towards the Tower for the Meet and Greet, if for nothing else the view. It sounds great!
Here's a pic (attached) from the observation deck at night, so I'm sure our view would be comparable since the O.D. is only a couple floors higher. Amazing view!
-
Since I was not able to view the pool deck, it was hard to make an educated guess. The sales manager indicated there would be a food and beverage minimum if they were to segregate a portion of the pool deck and that minimum might be greater than what would be required in the banquet room.
The other thing I forgot to mention is that minors could be present in the banquet room, but not in the cocktail lounge, even if we segregated a portion of that. Similarly, the food and beverage minimum for the lounge would most likely be higher than the banquet room. I assume since we have had children present the past several years (and happily so!) we would want to look at venues where they could be present.
I think the pool deck would certainly be a nice, open public space as long as the food and beverage minimums are manageable. Similarly, I think the views and privacy of the tower banquet room are stunning and would be enjoyed by our group.
The key is having enough people willing to attend the event and pay the requisite per person charge. I will be curious to see what that amount is.
I do believe this site has the potential to be one of our best gatherings ever. This is such an affordable city and the lodging rate we are being offered is simply unbeatable. I hope we can convince a sufficient number of members to joining us in August.
Gary
-
Gary,
The f&b is where they would be making their money, other than the gambling. They require a $500 deposit to hold the function space, which is applied to the f&b. The deposit issue can be worked out as has been done in the past.
The minimums are the same, regardless if the event is in the tower or on the pool deck.
If we were to go banquet style, the least expensive option is is $50 per person with a 40 person minimum. This items on the buffet would be the following...
Freshly Brewed Starbucks Coffee and Teas
Watermelon Basket Filled with Fresh Seasonal Fruit
Mixed Garden Greens with Raspberry Vinaigrette and Ranch Dressing
Caesar Salad with Traditional Dressing
Mirror of imported and Domestic Cheese
Antipast Salad Marinated Cucumber and Tomato Salad
Tri-Colored Pasta
Choice of 2 Entrees
Fresh Pacific Salmon with Citrus & Dill Beurre Blanc Sauce
Chicken Roulade Florentine
Sliced Tenderloin of Beef served with Peppercorn Sauce
Shrimp Scampi
Cheese Ravioli with Marinara Sauce
Chefs Selection of Starch
Fresh Seasonal Vegetables
Freshly Baked Rolls and Butter
Specialty Pastries and a Variety of Tarts
A sit down style dinner would average slightly less or more depending on the entree we chose.
To have our own cash bar would require a minimum of $350 in sales, which according to years past should not be a problem. If we wanted an open bar, the cost would be $26 - $28 per person for 3 hours. This actually isn't a bad deal considering the cost of drinks which range from $4.00 for juices/soda to $6.50 for top shelf.
Prices above do not reflect a sales tax or a 20% gratuity.
Now, I've posted this information just as a guideline for everyone. Once I have an idea of how many people are attending and what we want, I'll be in a better position to enter into talks with the banquet manager. One thing I can guarantee is that the cost will remain around the same price as in years past, which I think is a nominal cost to have our own space.

count me in
Nick
-
Yikes, theres several threads going on so I'm not for sure which one to respond under (LOL) but for the most part count me and the hubby in. Will have a better answer in a month or two. All I had to say was Las Vegas too him on the phone and he was already tallying up ways for us to make this trip.
-
I know this was pointed out by Dennis in the "Las Vegas Gathering" Thread, but it bears repeating. The room rates Dennis negotiated are unbelievably cheap, especially for the venue. To book your room today takes a mere $33.60 (I'm looking at my bank account). The remaining approx $150 ( I forget the exact amt. at the moment) will be charged during the stay. This is for a full 5 day stay. So for those who are cash strapped, with this economy most of us are, you can book today for the $33, then put away $25/mo up till Aug and your stay is paid for! If you wish to trim this down even more you can book for less than 5 days. Of course this doesn't include Airfare, food, entertainment, etc... but you can do all those things on the cheap! Plus the more people we get, the better our Meet and Greet rates. This is a very doable gathering in Sin City!
-Will

Will some very good pointers! =) I read your post off to the husband and he nodded his head in agreement.
Just a forewarning to everyone if me and the hubby do make it. I am very shy, I will either not talk at all or ramble because I am nervous. But if I have a couple drinks I will mellow out (LOL) I'm a goofy nerd but I've got a big heart :D

Just a forewarning to everyone if me and the hubby do make it. I am very shy, I will either not talk at all or ramble because I am nervous. But if I have a couple drinks I will mellow out (LOL) I'm a goofy nerd but I've got a big heart :D
No, you'll fit right in with the rest of us goofy nerds ;D

We'll be booking our flights soon and making our hotel reso's. I was waiting on my Fed. tax refund which finally arrived. I'm looking forward to seeing the 'gang' in Vegas!

Ravhyn, once you get around them all, you'll suprise yourself how much you'll talk. It will be like you've always known those guys and gals. I went to SF and it was a blast.

Anyone up for seeing KĄ by Cirque du Soleil at The MGM????
Cheapest Tix are $69, but they seem to be running an ongoing 25% discount for certain showings, They dont have any discount info for August yet but it looks as though they do this every month.
Check it...

Since I'm working again I may be going to this gathering. If so I'll probably want to see a few of the shows while I'm there. Peepshow is high on my list.

Sin City Daredevils Can Take 'Stratosphere' Freefall From 829 Feet
http://www.foxnews.com/us/2010/04/21/stratosphere-jump-opens-daredevils-las-vegas/?test=latestnews
The 855-ft leap officially set a Guinness World Record for highest commercial decelerated descent
So if all the crazy rides atop the Strat were not enough they've added this freefall experience.
This looks pretty cool. It's a freefall but yet you are connected by wires to keep you from straying on the way down. I think I'd like to do this but it's $100, so maybe not. I wonder if instead of a free fall they would just lower me a few inches at a time?
-Will
-
I've seen KA and it is outstanding. I would highly recommend it. ;)
I'm pretty sure I will be able to make it to Vegas for this gathering, but Im not sure about the exact dates yet.
I'll post when Im solid.
What I do know for sure -- is that I wont be jumping off the stratophere anytime soon, but I dont mind watching. :o

I feel as though I should mention this:
Penn and Teller perform regularly at the Rio. It seems as though they may have common interests with many of us. (below) Their show is entertaining comedy/magic, and the Rio masquerade in the sky (not daily anymore) is something to see.

Since folks are tossing out ideas of fun things to do in Las Vegas, I'd like to point out that Blondie and The B-52s are performing Saturday August 7 at Mandalay Bay. The only tickets I can find are general admission, but they are available. I have no idea how well this venue is setup for shows of this kind.

Great Find Henry ! I would Die to see them, especially Blondie. Apparently the concert is outside at the "Beach", maybe thats why its General Admission, not sure though.$55 seems reasonable enough to see them. The general admission sorta worries me though since Im not sure how the venue is set up.

Did you have any trouble making the reservation? They found the group in their system without issue?
We'll get an arrivals thread going shortly.
We called to make reservations last weekend and they couldn't find us. The actually said we weren't in the system yet! I'm not sure what's up with that. I'll try again this weekend.
-
Strange...we were already in the system when I checked back in February. I am sure we haven't hit the cut off date yet. Hope Dennis can straighten this out soon.
Gary
and yes...I had the Derby winner!

Like Gary said, the group has been set up since February. I just called reservations and the agent had no problem recalling the group in her system. Did you call 1-800-998-6937? The group code is AMG or C-AMG. Try again and let me know if you continue to have problems.

I love Zumanity! Very different than the other Cirque show; fun nonetheless. You can't go wrong with any of them. I think I've seen them all accept for the Beetles and Elvis inspired shows. Le Reve at the Wynn is also worth seeing.

O.K. you two (will and jan) here's the deal
(I'm throwing down the gauntlet! ;D
I'll actually pay the $99.00 for each of you to risk your damned fool lives jumping off the top with nothing more than a rubber band standing between you and your . . . . . well we'll just leave it at that.
There's only one condition. If either of you, or both of you, chicken out then you'll owe me double (that would be $198.00 each :o).
So what do you say?
Deal or No Deal?
RAB
Who wonders which will be the first to chicken out.

"Will" who??? I havent been posting in AM for months, it's been the Evil Monky that lives in my closet....yeah, thats it. Damn Evil Monkey, ALWAYS get my ass in a crack when hes does this!!
I'll take your "DEAL", but of course only if the chicken from down under takes it also :) but only one caveat...that you pick up my passed out trembling body off the ground after I jump off a perfectly good building.
Hello...Jan??

That looks really fun to me . One reason I traveled to New Zealand was to do all the crazy fun adventure sport that is offered . I'm going to have to make it to Vegas one day just to jump off a building . It will be worth it .

i got that large cocktail for you, hehehe.
i have a fear of heights and falliing that keeps me from peering out of windows above the third floor. for some unknown reason that stratosphere jump looks fun.
-
also, is anyone going to the blondie show? i know im being a cheap bastard but that lady kicks ass. now if it were like blondie and pat benatar id be all over it.
but blondie suffices and i think i can pry the purse open enough to shell out some dough but i'm not rolling solo. also, watching deuce bigalow with my niece yesterday and hearing call me made me want to see miss harry perform.
she performed recently at a fund raiser wtih gaga and sting and she still looks & sounds amazing.

If I can make it to Vegas, I may just have join you dumbasses and jump off the tower ;D I've always wanted to go bridge diving. This is the next best thing.
Next, I wouldn't mind seeing Blondie. The Mandalay pool is an excellent concert venue.
-
wow,
blondie, stratosphere jumping, cirque du soleil and not to mention the gay clubs i plan on visiting (read flex, gypsy or krave) on the fruit loop...
this is gonna cost me. somethings gotta go. i think its gonna be my liver : ). those daytime meetings are gonna be fun...lots of coffee to combat the previous nights excursions. but thats life. and i want to live a lil....and the drinks are free in my room at vegas ::)
what are some of the ideas floating around for our activities after the meet and greets & discussions? i want to be level headed for those but i am bringing my appetite for destruction.
best,

BOOOOOO!
Cher will be on break from Ceasers during the month of august :(
I would have DIED to see her.
-Will
-
i'll take it you're gay...lol
-
I have been eight times to Vegas in the past three years and Cher always manages to be away! One time I finally scored a ticket and she was in town she had to cancel because of her throat. I settled for the Cher knockoff (Divas in Drag...or something like that), significantly cheaper, and a real hoot. There's always plenty to see in Vegas. Looking forward to August.

Next, I wouldn't mind seeing Blondie. The Mandalay pool is an excellent concert venue.
For clarification, Blondie will be indoors at the Mandalay Bay Events Center, not the pool / beach. General admission only. Tickets are $55. Saturday August 7.

Yes, Mandalay Bay's web site indicates that the venue is the Beach. Some other ticketing web sites state it is the Events Center, but Mandalay Bay's own web site should be authoritative.

ok, I'll admit it, I'm a Vegas buffet whore...
I know the Vegas Buffets are not what they used to be, I can remember getting all you can eat buffets with Crab legs, steak, etc...for something ridiculous like 8.99, but that was years ago. It seems now you can't enter a buffet anywhere in Vegas for less than $23 (dinner).
However I found this All Inclusive Citywide Buffet Pass for $39.99, good for 24 hours. The "Citywide" claim is somehwat overblown as it only includes HArrahs owned Casinos. But there are 7 buffets on the list, including Ceasars and Paris. This seems like a pretty good deal, especially for someone like me who likes to eat alot.
http://www.harrahs.com/buffets/faq.html
Anyone been there recently that can comment on the Vegas Buffets or this "pass"?
