Supplements Specifically Designed for HIV+ People?
« on: November 03, 2007, 06:30:06 pm »

Not sure if this has been discussed in previous posts, so please forgive me if I'm repeating a topic.  I was wondering whether any supplement manufacturer makes a vitamin/mineral supplement that is specifically designed to meet the nutritional needs of people with HIV.  I've read all sorts of recommendations on what I should or should not be taking, and I was curious as to whether any reputable manufacturer is marketing an "all in one" supplement for us.

Any ideas?

I found out I was Poz on April 20th and saught out this same kind of advice. I would love to know what other over the counter supplements people take?
One that I have been taking is Selenium, I take 3, 200mg pills every AM, and they seem to be doing some good stuff because I feel quite healthy right now. There is some strong research to say that Selenium helps the immune system, so hey it can't be all that bad.

I was told that multivitamins are also good, but there are better ones out there that work well. Any advice out there would def be a help.
Found out + on 4.20.07

4.20.07       CD4s 200     VL 37182
5.25.07       CD4s 242     VL 84000
7.17.07       CD4s 217     VL >100000
8.24.07       CD4s 118     VL 45303
10.05.07     CD4s 75       VL >100000
11.06.07     CD4s 60       VL 50361
12.05.07     CD4s 70       VL 55306
started Atripla on New Years Eve
1.21.08       CD4s 65       VL 435
2.28.08       CD4s 51       VL undetectable

You may want to read the Kpax thread, which is about a supplement that was designed for and marketed to pozzies.

When I was first diagnosed I got on numerous supplements. Nothing worked, my numbers declined fast instead of the opposite. By ID doc said just take a regular multivitamin and selenium. Thats all I take now. I do take some B's in the morning for energy. Good luck with them...they didn't work for me, and they get expensive.

My doctor recommended jus a good multivitamin (which includes minerals, such as selenium) and omega-3 supplements. I asked him about green tea and he basically said "if you want" but he didn't seem too enthusiastic about it.

p.s. the Kpax vitamins are utterly overpriced, and a ripoff if you ask me.

Indeed.

All I take (and what numerous HIV specialists have recommended) is a multi-vitamin (without extra iron), fish oil supplement, and calcium.  The calcium is only because I've been on HAART for such a long time, so it probably doesn't apply to most people, but is something to keep in mind down the road.

I also take a digestive enzyme and highly recommend this over everything, as HIV greatly effects absorption in your GI tract, regardless of whether or not you on meds yet.

In the years before HAART I was a total Vitamin Queen and tried everything from blue green algae to some kind of boxwood scrub extract from France.  Also, in the early 90's my doctor administered B-12 shots as they're only available by prescription, but that seems to not be done anymore.

So, Philly, what's the digestive enzyme you take?  Can you fill me in on that a bit, please?  I've heard about nutrient malabsorption in HIV+ people, but I wasn't aware there was anything one could do about it.

There has been ample evidence in the past that taking at least a multivitamin daily helps poz people. Just search this forum for previous discussions and studies cited in them.

I want to say that when I found out I was positive, I was told about a woman who specializes in vitamins for HIV+ people. You feel out a questionaire and answer some questions about your treatment and then she recommends the vitamin regimen. I have been very happy with the results. I am not endorsing anyone, but just has been my experience. If interested I can provide the information. I don't want to post it on here because it would seem like an advertisement. I was especially concerned about diminishing long term side effects because I was 25 when I became positive, but everyone has different concerns I know.

If you are one of her clients you also get a discount on vitamins when you order directly from the manufacturer. For great prices, I buy from this place in Houston that is the best prices around! They ship too. Again I can provide this information if interested.

Hi Bobino

Yes on of the big pharma companies, Galea Life Sciences,  is making a supplement specifically for the needs of HIV + people.

Its called Nutraplete: http://www.primenewswire.com/newsroom/news.html?d=137536

Nutraplete is the first therapeutic dietary supplement designed specifically for people living with HIV/AIDS. It is a multi-nutritional supplement, intended to address AIDS Wasting Syndrome. It works in conjunction with antiviral therapies and assists patients in the adherence and tolerance of treatments. Nutraplete is a "functional food" that encourages the restoration of lean body mass, can inhibit pro-oxidative stress, and improves immune function. Nutraplete is available by prescription, and has started the application process for inclusion with Medicaid and AIDS Drugs Assistance Program (ADAP) formularies.

I just wonder how much it will cost?

Does this help?

Be well,

MtD

Thanks !

So it looks like the vitamins are in fairly low doses (100% of RDA) ie. a generic multi, mixed with a protein powder, some fiber (inulin) and a few other ingredients .
Selenium is in the right amount (200 mcg). Acetyl l-carnitine is a good dose (over 1g), l-glutamine is good (1g).
Quercetin is OK but probably a bit low (250mg). Alpha lipoic acid 10 mg is too small a dose too be significant amount (I take 500 mg/day).
Not bad, but it all comes down to how much they will charge for it.

Personally, I have never found a protein powder that I could ingest no matter what I mixed it with. They are all yucky to me. But I found a great protein shake - pure protein shake frosty chocolate. It tastes great, has 35g of protein, and is also low calories and sugar. I found them locally at vitamin shoppe for $20 for 12 on sale (regular $25). Trader Joe's carries them too. It's relatively expensive (about the same daily cost as all 20 other supplements I take) but I don't have one every day, only when I'm too lazy to cook some meat.

If your looking for another protein powder, try Jarrow Whey Natural.

Its essentially like a weak powdered milk, that might not be that appealing, but if you put it in milk, blends very well.

I would strongly recommend seeing a licensed nutritionist that specializes in HIV (as well as your doc).

They would be the ones who would be able to design a vitamin and supplement plan that is appropriate for you. Remember everyone is different and has different requirements. What is right for you might be a bad choice for someone else. At least here, in California, they are required quite a bit of continuing ed to maintain their license so they would be able to distinguish what is crap and what is fact.

good luck

Without going over too many stats, I’m 61 and have been a devoted fitness fan since age 20.  I average 90 minutes per day, and alternate moderate resistance with cardio – three days per week with weights and two to three per week of 70-minute stints on my Schwinn Airdyne.

Just found out the early incarnation PI’s (in my case nearly 12 years on Viracept) can slowly destroy the spinal column and sternum – a problem less evident in more current PI versions.  Alarmingly, about 30% of us will be affected.  I found out because I now suffer from it, and so does another long-term PI user, a friend of mine, diagnosed with this unpleasant “side effect” at about the same time.  This doesn’t take into consideration the joint deterioration issues or natural aging process.  It’s just a new one on me, and what is really jarring is that the PI doesn’t screw up other bones with nearly the gusto it exhibits in attacking the spinal column and sternum.

There’s not a lot that can be done except to maintain calcium supplementation with D and continue my resistance training.  Although there are some meds to help rebuild the spinal column (well, bone density in general) and other aspects of bone deterioration, these carry a variety of side effects, some of which do not subside when the medication is stopped.

Instead of backing off from the weights, I’ve rededicated myself.  If trunk strength and balance can reduce the risk of a spinal fracture, the years of work will be worth the effort whether or not other benefits are in play, which they obviously are, of course.

As far as an excellent source of protein, I’ve always relied on egg whites.  Plain and simple egg whites with their nifty, natural amino acid profile have been staples for twenty years.  They love to be cooked in a microwave and I eat at least six per day with vegetables.  I’m also assessing all of my other vitamin/mineral supplementation.  Without laying claim to any real insight or knowledge, I’ve always taken a multi-vit with minerals (generic and cheap), zinc, selenium, fish oil, calcium w/D.  No doubt I could do more, but being borderline type-2, I also drink three cans of Glucerna daily.  This is a supplement I highly recommend whether you’re diabetic or not.  Lots of protein, vitamins and minerals, and a slow uptake of the dangerous carbs (sugars) that can run your meter into the red if not kept in check.

I just wanted to share this information with the forum.  I started the Promise Super Shots $3.59 here in Ohio for 4 (kinda expensive but who wants to take another pill). They are promoted to help lower cholesterol.

My experience has been that I did manage to lower my triglycerides by 100 points to about 229 & my good cholesterol went up 4 points or more than 10%.

Does anyone else have experience with these?

Stay Mighty,

I take K-Pax -- but half the recommended amount. I take 4 caps twice a day. I think that it is an excellent, and well absorbed supplement. I also take essential fatty acids and acidophillus/bifidus. Have been poz 23 years and have a CD4 of over 1,400. So this works for me. The cheap multi-vitamin tablets that are sold in most pharmacies are made from inferior quality ingredients (from places like China) with lots of fillers and binders and they don't tend to absorb so well.

How do you measure absorption, do you go into a lab and get blood tests? or is this from the packaging from your supplements? Sounds like sales pitch stuff to me.

I agree that eating right and getting the right nutrients can assist your body staying healthy, but vitamins are probably not the cause of being "healthy". But if it helps you emotionally and psychologically to deal, by all means I'd do it too.

If you want a good protein powder, that actually tastes good...try MuscleMilk, at GNC...mix the banana creme with a real banana and it tastes like a milkshake.

Also, my doc also highly recommended bovine Colostrum for immune system function, as well as a good fish oil (Omega 3) for anti-inflammatory properties, co-enzyme Q-10 (which is really pricey) and a good digestive enzyme.  Natural Factors in Canada makes a product call Megazymes, which is pretty high quality.

Cheers!

I've taken a multi-vitamin every day for my 15 years of HIV treatment.  Always.  I used to buy the most expensive stuff back in the 90's, and for the past 5 years or so I've taken cheap (read: free via ADAP) multi-vitamins with a CVS label (according to Susan they're bad and from China, but I can't tell from the labeling).

Verdict:  no appreciable difference between the two, but LOTS of money saved (though I do pay for fish oil and calcium tablets out of pocket).  In fact, if we were to go purely by my lab numbers then the Chinese must put pixie dust in my CVS vitamins because I'm healthier than ever.  Whoops... must be my HAART.

I've been taking One a day for Men(sometimes twice a day), and it seems to be working pretty well. I don't always have time to eat a nutritious meal. K-PAX seems to be a way too pricey about 50$ per month. That's 600$ after a year!. They claim that their vitamins are better absorbable. Our bodies don't really care if its synthetic or not. Unless it comes to Vitamin E and selenium which are better in natural form d-alpha vitamin E and seleniomethioine form of selenium. With all the other vitamins, minerals it has not been proven that natural or organic vitamins work better and they are assimilated the same way.
