Hi y'all -

I just found these forums last night and they're a great resource - not only for information but for camaraderie, too.  I recently tested positive and feel like I'm doing OK.  It was my partner who first tested positive so I had a few days and going through it with him before I received the same diagnosis. Maybe it was the fact that I'm in a loving relationship, maybe it was because it wasn't a shock when the doctor told me that I, too, had HIV, or maybe it was due to my irritating optimism - but I didn't flinch at all when I received the news.  I made up my mind that I wouldn't be beaten. 

My numbers were decent (see below): nothing to write home about but nothing to panic over either.  I decided, with the advice of my doctor (an ID doctor at a major research university hospital), that I would start my meds even though my CD4/viral load were higher/lower than what had traditionally been determined to be the "right" time to start.  It was my way of taking "control" of the situation, I think, but also because of the new studies promoting earlier treatment. I've only been taking my meds for a little more than five weeks but have had no recognizable side effects so far.  I'll be getting my first numbers back after starting treatment next week, so I look forward to see what, if any, changes took place.  I'm not expecting miracles but it sure would be nice to see movement in at least the VL. 

Anyway, I just wanted to introduce myself a little bit and look forward to getting to "know" you all better as I learn from you.

Hello chguy -- welcome to the boards and I'm happy to hear how well adjusted you are with your recent diagnosis and lack of side effects on your first regimen of meds.

Thanks - I appreciate that.  I was afraid at first that I was in denial: afraid to confront how truly serious my situation was.  As time has gone by, I've realized that it's just me being me.  I anticipate that there will likely be rough times ahead (mentally and physically) but why worry about that now, right?  I can only do what I can and right now that's taking care of myself and being adherent.

nyc_ev: Thanks! I will definitely do that.  I just got my first numbers back after being on meds and they're looking good.  VL is down from 38,000 to 847 and my CD4 is up from 426 to 631.  Not a bad start after four weeks of meds.

Thanks!  I was surprised especially about the CD4 count.  My next draw will be in three months, so we'll see.

You will be undetectable in 4 week's time, but you will find it out only in 3 months.
