Exercise... I hate it
« on: May 06, 2012, 07:10:41 pm »
I actually had a good time yesterday climbing with my daughter. We took pictures and I could not believe how out of shape I was in the photo yet I climbed like I was a little kid again. It brought back memories of when I was healthy and well without pills.
My daughter thanked me for taking her climbing, it made me happy.
I also slept good last night but did not wake until 11:45 this morning. And my legs are sore and so today I went for a walk and have been cleaning up around the house hoping all this type of stretching will make my legs feel better soon.
But to be honest I do hate traditional exercise though. I like activities and fun.
I wanted to ask how long would it take to get rid of the soreness in my legs?[/

Honestly? Keep moving. That soreness will go away.

Of course, if you stop moving, it will too - until the next time you want to have fun.

Harder to do than say, of course. But you've tasted the joy of an active life. You know you can do it. Just keep on doing it.

I will concur that I really don't like just "exercising."

I love walking, hiking, I take stairs rather than elevators, I park way out in the parking lots so I have to walk to the stores, I work in my garden.

But, in the winter, when the outdoor stuff is more limited, going to a gym is my only option.

If I lay off for the entire winter, I will be a mess in the spring.

By the way, the only exercise I truly enjoy is swimming, which I think I will start doing more of.

HUGS,

Mark

I think when I counted last week, it's a total of 65 stairs I have to climb from sidewalk level up to my apartment (I live on the 4th floor, no elevator). Add another 30 when I take the subway and we're close to 100. ::) I don't own a car so it's easy to walk a mile just running errands/food shopping etc.

That's my "gym".

I stopped exercising/working out last August and didn't exactly knock myself out when I did  . I keep my yard presentable but that's about all the exercise I get these days .

I have decided that because of my chronic pain condition and my age that its time to start watching my diet more and ease up on the physical stuff , or as I told my best bud Ive decided to just let myself go like you have .  ;) .

LOL....I had to answer this post when I saw it.  It made me laugh because, I'm a competitive bodybuilder, competing for about 10 years now and me too, I HATE HATE HATE the gym, hahahahahaha.  I know that seems strange for me to say that, but it's been almost 15 years of working out 2 1/2 to 3 hours a day, 5 days a week.  The schedule is tough and gets old.  At this point, though, I figure I have put so much work into it, have won trophies, etc., that it would be a waste to ever quit or give up.  Bodybuilding is a lot of work, but by no means does someone being a competitor mean that they like the actual exercising part of it.....hahahaha  Anyhow, give yourself about 2-3 days and your legs should be feeling back to normal.  Just make sure to drink an adequate amount of water too, as a loss of too much L-taurine (an amino acid in the body), can sometimes cause cramping in the legs, particularly the calves and insteps of the feet.

I'm not giving up by far and I'm very optimistic about my future . I simply cant do many of the things I used to do due to back and other medical problems so I'm moving on to a new phase in life .

It's been about a year and a half since I've lifted anything heavier than a beer. :) But now I'm in training for the AIDS LifeCycle, so I'm cycling 30-50 miles every weekend day whether I like it or not. And I'm in the best shape of my life, as reflected in my blood pressure numbers etc.

So, a big charity fundraiser can be an excellent motivator to get/stay in shape. They always say "it's a ride, not a race," but I sure don't want to be last...

That is exactly what I had were the cramping in my calves and upper legs as well. Now that I think of it I drank kool aid and not water that day. I have a sweet addiction! But I will definately drink more water. Thanks.

Hey idee,
I forgot to tell you.  It's okay that you had Kool-Aid, if you like the sweetness of it.  Just remember something, though.  Next time you're going to do a lot of physical activity and/or walking again, look into powdered L-Taurine, for the cramping.  L-Taurine is usually on the cheap side, as far as affordability.  More so, if you buy it in powder form, rather than capsules, which is what I would personally recommend.  For example, NOW brand, 8 oz. Taurine powder is about $7.  I'm sure that would last you for at least a month, but only if you were continuously using it daily.  Otherwise, it's going to last you a lot longer than that.  Anyhow, what you could do is mix a little into your Kool-Aid.  I'd say no more than a half teaspoon, otherwise the taste of the taurine would start to overpower your Kool-Aid, and it would have more of a salty, bitter taste then.  Of course, if you have any concerns about it, then ask your doctor.   L-Taurine is basically an amino acid, so it really shouldn't have any negative effects.  Take care and hopefully I was able to help somewhat......Always, Marcelino

EDIT:  Grrrrr, I always notice that I forget to add something after I put up my post.  What I was going to say is that if you are going to put L-Taurine into Kool-Aid that is in a regular size glass or cup, put about 1/4 teaspoon of Taurine in, instead of a 1/2 teaspoon, because I still think you're going to get a little bit of a bitter taste with that much.  Try experimenting with those suggested amounts until you find one that's suitable with your palette.

...however...I like the results...

Sometimes at the gym when I happen to be using a mirror to make sure I'm doing an exercise correctly I say to myself...why am I doing this, why do I put myself through 4 to 5 days of exercise. About that time images of me with a belly appear and I start working out harder. I don't mind bellies on other men (they make nice, warm, soft pillows) I just don't want one for myself.

At this point in my life, exercise has become a part of my routine. I started off in college and pretty much have gone to a gym since that time. It's like taking a shower in the morning. I just do it. Even if I'm feeling down I go. Figure wherever I'm at I'll be down but at least at the gym I'll have something to show for it.

Would like to say I love to camp and hike and all that...but unfortunately, because of certain issues regarding my digestive system, it isn't realistic for me to do those things. The best I can do is plan a vacation at the beach where I'll have a place to retire to should the need arise.

So, for me, it's the gym if I want to stay in shape. Don't hate it, just don't love it either...
Of course it's important. It's an email...

If you don't eat like a pig, and take stairs and walk everywhere, you don't need to go to a gym. Now if you want to look bulky and muscular then you need the gym.
