Is Ryan White the same as ADAP?

I've always thought that ADAP and Ryan White were the same programs.  Could someone shed some light, please?

Hey Guy,

No, as was noted in the other thread, ADAP is a program paid for by Ryan White. Actually, it is called the Ryan White Care Act, is a federal act that provides each state with money to provide HIV services based at least in part on the number of cases being treated or cared for in that state.

The states decide how the money is divvied up. In New Mexico, where I live, ADAP was at one time a major part of how Ryan White funds were spent. Now, that has shited to the state's Medical Insurance Program, which provides people with full insurance coverage, including drug benefits, rather than just medication.

The state uses the money to pay the premiums for those in the insurance program, rather than just allocting the money to ADAP.

Ryan White Program funds are used as a backup here, paying for medical costs not associated with hospitalization for those not yet enrolled in the insurance program and funding ADAP for those not yet covered by insurance or who are in prison. Ryan White doesn't cover any hospitalization here, which is why the MIP is a good thing for people to have.

Anyway, while it varies from state to state, Ryan White funds are used to provide a lot of the services people with HIV receive in the U.S.

HUGS,

Mark

Down here in florida ryan white is also used for people above the adap poverty level so they can get their meds. well until march 1st they are trying to change the rules to make the income level for receving meds thru ryan white the same as adap. also we get alot of meds thru ryan white that u cant thru adap such as androgel, depression meds, antibiotics, anxiety meds, b-12 shots, and even suppositories. unfortunately with an upcoming proposed change to ryan white for meds looks like alot of us are going to be doing drug studies to get our medications!
