Oral sex encounter - major paranoia
« on: March 30, 2013, 04:20:57 pm »
Alright, I know that there is a chance that I'm just being paranoid, but I'm nevertheless beating myself up with anxiety. Two weeks ago, on March 18th, I met a random older man and gave him oral sex for 10 minutes and he ejaculated in my mouth and then I left. I got tested the next day for HIV (and a full panel, despite the fact that an HIV test would not reveal any exposure) and it came back negative on all accounts.

Before this guy, I haven't been with anyone sexually in over 12 months so I know that my recent HIV test is definitive for all of my sexual encounters BEFORE him, but I am worried about that one-time oral encounter. So I asked him his status and he said negative and also said he's only had oral sex in the past six months since his last HIV test. He seems very honorable and willing to cooperate and deal with my paranoia. He offered to go get a rapid test to prove to me, etc. Yet I am still paranoid.

This is where it gets weird... about six or seven days after the encounter, I developed a sore throat, a dry couch, a chest cold, swollen lymph nodes in my neck and groin, and last night I was shaking really bad when I was trying to sleep... I cannot take my mind off this situation and it is driving me insane...

So to sum up... one time oral sex encounter with a man who is respectable and only tops, says he hasn't had sex in six months since his last HIV test, and said the only thing he HAS done is receive oral sex from a regular guy that he plays with... he also offered to test.

Am I at risk? Should I worry? How do I clear my mind!!!!

Thank you so much

Hi Guy . You didn't have a risk preforming oral sex in this situation . Your saliva contains about a dozen proteins a enzymes that render HIV unable to infect in all but the most severe cases of terrible oral health and advanced periodontal disease or meth mouth .

There have been no fewer than three separate serodiscordant couples studies (where one person is HIV positive, the other negative.) These couples were tracked for three. five and ten years. The couples used condoms for penetrative vaginal and anal sex, but NO BARRIER at all for oral sex. Any kind of oral sex.

These studies yielded NO infections.

Honestly, I would not worry about this at all. Unless your oral hygiene is poor enough to suppress your saliva (google "meth mouth") at the exact same period in which your partner's viral load is in the millions, there shouldn't even be a problem.

We have yet to determine what factors, exactly, create receptive fellatio transmission in the wild - because none of the three serodiscordant couples' studies have ever turned up such an event. We can theorize what might have let to what might be at best a statistically insignificant number of transmissions through that vector, but that's really just guesswork. Oral sex is essentially safer sex.

There are over a dozen identified elements in human saliva that render HIV inert and incapable of infecting a cell. And the cells that HIV targets are not found in any abundance in the oral cavity in any case.

As for symptoms, we really don;t discuss them much here. Acute Retroviral Syndrome tends to run the gamut from zero symptoms to hospitalization. And it's unique tothe individual. Allergies can produce many of the same symptoms, as well as cold, the flu, stress, and a number of other things.

If you really feel you need to test, then wait six weeks and do it. But I would not think to advise it over this event.

Please wear a condom for penetrative anal/vaginal sex and you will avoid HIV. It's relly that simple.

"Many people, especially in the gay community, turn to oral sex as a safer alternative in the age of AIDS. And with HIV rates rising, people need to remember that oral sex is safer sex. It's a reasonable alternative."

So there isn't anything to worry about? I'm really freaked out about my swollen lymph nodes - I know you guys don't talk about symptoms, I'm just demonstrating how these symptoms are exacerbating my anxiety. I can't seem to convince myself that I just have a cough... I am obsessed with convincing myself that I have HIV, despite the fact that this guy is so cooperative, and non-suspicious, and he's anything but flakey.

It seems like your friend as gone far beyond what is required to quite your anxiety so that is encouraging .

The facts are you were not at risk and can now move on and put your fears far behind you .
