I hope this guy gets the same treatment as Jimmy the Greek. I hope no one buys into his rehab:

Tim Hardaway says he hates 'gay people' when asked about Amaechi
Updated 2/15/2007 1:55 AM ET

   By Tony Gutierrez, AP

Retired NBA guard Tim Hardaway said he would not have wanted a gay man on his team during his playing days.
MIAMI (AP) — Retired Miami Heat guard Tim Hardaway said Wednesday that he hates gay people, but later said he regretted the remarks.
"You know, I hate gay people, so I let it be known. I don't like gay people and I don't like to be around gay people," he said while a guest on Sports Talk 790 The Ticket. "I'm homophobic. I don't like it. It shouldn't be in the world or in the United States."

The discussion was sparked by last week's announcement that retired NBA center John Amaechi is gay. The host asked Hardaway how he would interact with a gay teammate.

"First of all, I wouldn't want him on my team. And second of all, if he was on my team, I would, you know, really distance myself from him because, uh, I don't think that is right. I don't think he should be in the locker room while we are in the locker room."

If he did find out that a teammate was gay, Hardaway said he would ask for the player to be removed from the team.

"Something has to give," Hardaway said. "If you have 12 other ballplayers in your locker room that's upset and can't concentrate and always worried about him in the locker room or on the court or whatever, it's going to be hard for your teammates to win and accept him as a teammate."

He later apologized for the remarks during a telephone interview with Fox affiliate WSVN in Miami.

"Yes, I regret it. I'm sorry. I shouldn't have said I hate gay people or anything like that," he said. "That was my mistake."

Now the apologizing will start.  He prob will need to elaborate on his remarks and explain why they weren't what they seemed.  I agree with Nadine....

Can't decide what's more absurd, the lame attempt to backpedal or the full-blown stupidity.

he can probably write a book now, just like the player who came out last week. Who fucking cares. I dont care who fucks who or who hates who or why.
I have already heard this a couple of times today and will probably hear it more, how gay people make this their choice. THe sports show I listen to has shot these callers down immediately. It is not a choice....
The best line i have ever heard was in a post here last week, something about asking a straight when they made the choice to be straight.

Maybe they should have him go up aginst 'Kramer ' in Celibrity Deathmatch.

Although this is hardly groundbreaking news, I like the way that the Media falls all over it when a public figure spouts off with some offensive rant, personally I think that 'Celebrity Status' should be earned by somehing other than Box office Earnings or Point Statistics,  but thats just me..

The public somehow thinks it's okay for athletes to be homophobic.  Afterall they are real men.  Who have to shower together.  So it's okay if they make hateful remarks.

And can these guys get over the lame shower excuse.  Even though Tim is a midget in the basketball world, at 6'0" and 180#, I doubt he needs to worry about being molested.

But good for Amaechi to come out!

Since when did the opinions of Pro Atheletes start carrying so much weight ??

Because pro atheletes get endorsement money from companies who then figure they too can be bigots. Someone one needs to ask him if he knows what the words intolerance and discrimination mean.  Already he is backpedaling because some companies don't want to be associated with this attitude.  And while for you this isn't much think about about all the kids who play basketball thinking this and then taking it to the next level.
This to me is way bigger than Mel because more kids are influenced by sports figures than Hollywood directors.  My gaydar tells me that he is trying very hard to distance himself- gee is he on the d.l.- can't wait to when some dude says they did him in Indiana!

Those highly paid morons on steroids still get away with all this because the general public goes along with it.

I for one, never understood and relate to any of these guys scratching their balls, chewing gum like cows and spitting right in your faces while on TV  ;D

Furthermore what's in a name like Hard Away; I bet he can't even get it up :D

What pisses me off are straight guys who think that because you're gay you fancy every single man ever and you're going to rape them hard the minute they turn their backs on you.  What the hell does he have to worry about if a gay man was sharing the locker room with him.  Prick.

I personally don't give a shit what some mentally challenged ex-"sports celebrity" thinks about gay people but I do care when any "_______-celebrity" makes blatantly offensive public comments.  Racism, misogyny, heterosexism, homophobia, religious bigotry, etc. should not be tolerated in a civilized society and members should be castigated for encouraging such prejudices.  You can think anything you want about me as a gay man but don't try to force your crap on me.

What's so stupid about this idiot's remarks is he very likely was in locker rooms and showers with gay/bi men but didn't know it.   Homosexuals in sports are some of the biggest closet cases.  Sports are "masculine" pursuits and all homos are "effeminate" so there cannot possibly be any homos in major or minor league or college or high school (whatever) sports teams.  Right.

I'm with londonguy on the issue of straight men who think all homos want to have sex with them.  What's often so amusing is the guy is a uber-troll and I wouldn't touch him if he begged me.  I've never been interested in having sex with a straight friend.  Even if I'm attracted physically, if he's straight I'm not turned on.  I have no interest in recreational sex and that's all it would be if it occurred.

Like Cliff said, these guys take showers together after competing long and hard out on the court.  They're athletes.  They love competition.  It doesn't stop out there on the court.  I'm sure they're looking and comparing and eying each others "junk" all the time.  It's part of the sexual undertones of being an athlete both on and off the field.  I mean I love watching athletes compete because I love looking at their bodies and they know it.  They love it when people watch.  They thrive on it.  And the sexual intensity off the field is just as great as what they feel on the field.  YOu think they can just turn it off like <snap> that ?  No way.  It continues on in the locker room  They love it.

They jut won't admit it.  Well some might admit it.  Timmy never will though.  He's an asshole.

Yes I am glad the NBA is distancing themselves from him, and for you guys who think it is a not an issue- I am really confused. This is the kind of attitude that let the Jews go to the gas chamber, Tibet  and every other atrocity,
How do you guys feel about  having your friends discriminated against?
Plain and simple it is bigotry, Christian rite bigotry at it's best,

Well, what's the big deal? People have hated our kind throughout history. Some eras are more favorable to us than others. It's just the media doing what the media does well, which is to stir shit for headliners.
But........Andy's words ring so true. And it DOES effect me that much.

Thanks Johnny for taking the time to post such a truly important subject...

It is most unfortunate that so many inner city young men look up to pro athletes so much that their words and actions are taken as gospel...The vast majority of pro athletes are decent men but when a player such as Hardaway makes these despicable comments it does lead to gay bashing, homophobic comments in classrooms as well as on the streets and greater overall intolerance...Throw in what some youngsters hear at home and even in places of worship and it often leads these confused young men to do terrible things and think they are doing something righteous and moral.

Mr. Amaechi was interviewed on a talk radio show the other day and he said that so many young men see only 3 ways to get out of the inner city- sports, music or illegal activities such as drug dealing or pimping...He said society should be doing more to stress education, education and education as the way out for these young people...So many inner city youth do go on to become professionals as their parents are there for them and they study hard and go to college...But of course the vast majority will never make a dime in sports or music and the other options are a sure ticket to prison and its often revolving door.  Shame on Hardaway and shame on society for the options presented to so many of our youth.
