Probably worrying needslessly but...
« on: October 21, 2012, 09:39:40 am »
I am a 39 year old gay man.  I always practise safe sex - i.e. I always use a condom for anal sex.

Recently I have been feeling run down, headaches, fagitued with a swelling on the lymph node in one armpit.

I'm not in a relationship at the moment so I've had a fairly active sex life in the last year or so.   I had a dental implant at the beginning of the year and waited a full 2 months to allow it to heal before I resumed my sex life.  However there has been some irritation in the gums for the last 6 months or so.  Sometimes bleeding when I floss etc.

I have made an appointment at the docs to get this looked at and also have made an appointment to get a full STD checkup this week.  I know it's unlikely but I can't help worrying that my current symptoms might be related to sero-conversion.

I know that I'm being slightly neurotic, but I'm worried that my gum issue might have allowed me to pick up HIV by giving oral sex.

Am I worrying needlessly?

Tom

Tom,

Yes, you're worrying unnecessarily.

However, it's a good thing that you have an appointment with your doctor - as I always tell people, if you feel unwell, see your doctor. There are causes to health problems other than hiv out there.

It's also good to hear that you are also going to have a complete sexual health check up. You should be doing that at least once a year, or more often if you're very active. It's what responsible adults do to protect their health and the health of their partners. Please keep in mind that many other STIs are MUCH more easily transmitted than hiv and some of them can be present with no obvious symptoms. This is why regular, routine check ups are a must for any sexually active adult.

Going by what you have told us, I expect you to test hiv negative. Good luck getting to the bottom of what is going on.

Ann

HIV is certainly character-building. It's made me see all of the shallow things we cling to, like ego and vanity. Of course, I'd rather have a few more T-cells and a little less character. Randy Shilts
