Peru,,, shoudl i go?
« on: April 10, 2007, 03:02:18 pm »
my good friend is offering all paid trip to go to Machu Pichu (sp???) with him in July.

he knows about my recent illness and etc...

should I go?

I am extremely scared even though I have been an avid hiker and outdoorsy for a long time.

my concerns are:

1) what if i loose my medicine on the trip?

2) what if peru doesn't let hiv poz people in

3) what if the plane lands in some country where hiv poz peopel are executed?

4) how am i going to put on my testosterone gel?

5) how am i going to take my mepron liquid?

6) how do you guys all feel about being indebted to your friend for him having paid for your trip?

7) what if my cd4 drops all the sudden while on the trip or somehow PCP recurs during the trip?

should i now go? or should I go?

thanks

Dude, do your homework and find out if Peru has prohibitions on HiVers--if not, GO!
Except for #2, you are fretting about the small stuff. You will work out all the other minor details.
P.S. Bring me back a llama. I need a good Peruvian stud for my girls here.  ;)

About #6: He wants to go but doesn't want to go alone. Am I right?

Definitely GO!

You're a long time dead, and that place is supposed to be spectacular. It's definately on my list. Do everything like you do here, and get some decent travel insurance and you'll be fine.

If a friend is offering to pay for you, I don't see any debt or obligation. These things don't exist in friendships. And he sounds like he wants to do something for you.

Have fun!

EG, the real issue is do you want to go. If you do then all of all of your concerns are dealable and beside the point.

My younger son did the climb to Machu Pichu after completing a college semester in Ecuador. He loved it and had a wonderful time. He met an Israeli fellow and they became good friends. Everyone I know who's gone has had a spectacular time.

I would just encourage you to make the life affirming choice whatever that might be.

If you take a laptop you can talk to us from Machu Pichu!

Cheers,

How scary and EXCITING!!!  Can't you just pack some baby wipes (travel size) to wipe before the testosterone?

I apologize for making a comment that downplays your worries. Yes, of course, they are valid.
Testosterone: Isn't it the jel the you apply on the skin? No problem bring the wipes to clean up beforehand........or apply in the hotel room before you venture out and when you get back to the hotel......no exact timing issue on the gel.
Losing you meds: Not a chance. Carry them on in a carry-on baggage. That way they are always with you. Egello, thousands of people fly everyday. Thousands of people take meds. Most of them keep their meds close to them when they fly in case luggage gets there a day late or gets lost. (Just gave you something else to worry about, didn't I?)
If the plane lands in some country....: Airlines do not just land in unscheduled places. (OK, there are exceptions here and there.)
Mepron liquid: Administer dosage just like you take it at home. Are you going to be staying in a tent or a hotel room?

I think you are excited and you are now wondering if HIV is going to get in the way. Not in your current healthy condition. This is the part where you step out and realize it doesn't have you by the balls. You are not sick now, are you?
P. S. Drink bottled water.

6) how do you guys all feel about being indebted to your friend for him having paid for your trip?

t

Dear T:

Shut the fuck up and go.

The only valid concern you had was #6, and the rest of it can all be worked out.  Machu Pichu is a place of great spiritual power, I'm certain you will find yourself at a crossroads of a life-altering experience in going.  And, with regard to #6, let me say, that friends will - without hesitation - take up the the very valuable time of their friends, which cannot be replaced; but have issues accepting gifts from them, which can.

So, you need to drop your high falutin' fears at accepting such material gifts, and consider an appreciation of the gift of sharing (in time and experience) in the wonders that your friendship represents to this person - to whom you obviously mean a great deal.

End of story.  No more whining.

-joseph

p.s.  We at AM will be expecting the forthcoming pictures of Machu Pichu

Oh yeah...

You could always pop out a bottle of wine as you sit on the steps of MP, and tell this person just what their friendship means to you.  As a friend gifting time and experience to another, just sharing those experiences with someone I care about means much more to me than going alone.

...and mail me a gourd.

If I were you, I would go.  You can always take precautions about your HIV status.  Make sure you don't overwhelm yourself and listen to your body.  You have some valid concerns, but they can easily be taken care of.  Don't let HIV stop you from having a good time.

Heck, if you decide not to go, can I take your place??  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Go and have fun and tell us all about it when you get back ok??

yikes,,, thanks guys

i said YES to his offer,,,,

i heard of those countries where they are very strict against hiv poz people...

where do you guys carry your pills? should I carry them in my original hiv med pill case? or put them in a vitamin pill case? or my weeklys scheduled pill case?

no, i am not sick right now,, actually i feel fine,, and even great, and back to lifting as much as i used to lift in my early 20s. however, i know that someone here relapsed back into PCP after 6 months,,, so i am bit scared about it...

we will be hiking the whole time btw,,, sort of like in a tour group where they cook for us and provide camping etc... they don't allow individual climb up there.

Cool.  Again, pictures are mandatory, and I'd highly recommend a bottle of wine to share with your friend.  And perhaps you should take a small notebook, and write haikus of your experiences and observations to share with him a month after the trip.  :)  Sometimes it's all about the little things.

Don't forget the gourd!

I went to Bolivia, which is next door to Peru, on business (with a little pleasure thrown in) a few years back and it was a fantastic and entirely unforgettable experience. Admittedly that was when I was still neg and there is no denying medical facilities and so on are not on the same high level as the industrialised world - but still good enough. My biggest problem was adjusting to the altitude - but you adapt over a couple of days. If I was offered to go today I'd do it in a heartbeat. Don't let "what if's" get in your way but by all means ask your doc first. Very envious, I am... ;D

BTW, Peru does not appear to have any restrictions on HIV+ travellers:

I've probably travelled to 15 foreign countries with tons of HIV medications, always in their original bottles.  Never once have been queried about them.

However, if you don't put them in their original bottles expect to be pulled aside as an ecstasy dealer or something.

I spent many months traveling in Peru a very long time ago--pre-AIDS era, even.

Machu Picchu is amazing, as is the train ride from Cuzco to Juliaca/Puno (two small towns on Lake Titicaca).  Without a doubt, these parts of the trip were the highlights of my time there.

So...do the homework about the HIV policies, and then go for it!

(By the way, my BF had an emergency appendectomy in a small town on the southern coast of Peru on Christmas Day.  I remember the hospital was scary to look at, but the doctor was excellent--educated in the U.S. and spoke near perfect English.  It was a relief, because we hadn't been there long at the time, and we were really off-the-beaten tourist path.)

Ask me what I was doing there, and I'll have to plead the fifth.

You'll see the gourds Joseph is referring to when you get there. Natives will be selling painted gourds done up in a Peruvian fashion.

If you need to get a passport get on it and don't procrastinate....as it takes about 6 wks. to 2 months to process.

ACtually, they are often burned, scraped, and painted then sold as ornaments, musical, and libation devices to help the economy of the poor indigenous people.

I expect that the one you send me will actually be quite the conversation piece...  "Yeah, I got this from some guy onlike to whom I said, 'just shut the fuck up and take the trip'.  Hell, he didn't even know what a gourd WAS."  LOL

Go for it matey. you'll have the time of your life. I was there way back in 89 but still to this day have some of the best memories from my time there. It's one of the most amazing places in the world. Please go.
Sounds like your friends are planning to do the Inca Trail from Cuzco to Machu Picchu if you are on a planned hiking tour.

Hi egello
In response to your questions:

1) Take care of your meds so you don't lose them and take your prescription (script?) with you

2) Check the rules/regulations for Peru re entry of hiv+ folk

3) Stop worrying about stuff you can't control

4) Sorry guys - this one one is lost on me... ::)

5) Ditto to 4)

6) I would feel extremely fortunate to have such a Cool Friend. I've made similar offers to friends in my life.

7) Make sure you get good travel insurance that covers the hiv too. In the event that you get sick/scared/bored you can always change your ticket and go home early.

Out of all of the above I've higlighted the most important one.

Oh and an extra bit of advice (free of course! ;)) is to make sure you're pretty fit before you go. Just speaking from my recent travel experiences. If you don't exercise already, do some walking etc over the next few months to prepare your body for the trip. If you already exercise regularly, great!

If you decide to go, enjoy the anticipation and have a FAB time!

Depends. What part of the globe do you live in?

*edited to say: Just peeked at your profile and it says you're in the US. Sorry, don't know about travel insurance from the US, but I'm sure there are many on here who do.

Good luck with your decision!

www.travelguard.com/ is one I have used before. According to the research I did on 'em, they pay up when claims are filed. Be advised: review information and purchase proper policy to cover luggage and health concerns. Read and understand their cancellations policy before you buy.
It's not complicated. However, if you cancel for causes that are not in compliance with the said policy they won't honor claim.

re:  travel insurance

I researched this a couple of years ago, and if I remember right, there's almost always a clause about preexisting health conditions.

Anyone know anything?

Q. What other coverage is typically included in an AIG Travel Guard travel insurance plan?
A. In addition to trip cancellation and interruption, the more comprehensive travel insurance plans available today may also cover emergency medical expenses; emergency medical transportation, when ordered by a doctor, to the nearest adequate medical facility; reimbursement for accommodations and expenses incurred due to travel delays; reimbursement for the purchase of essential items if baggage is delayed; and coverage against lost, stolen or damaged baggage.

ademas: Interesting question. I realize this doesn't address the issue of pre-existing conditions.........but it does specify emergency type interventions. Now, how one obtains doctors order for transport to nearest facility when on a trek to Machu Picchu is beyond me.

GO GO GO GO GO do not let this virus rule your life.  If you let it rule you and hold you back then the virus has won.  Keep on living and enjoy life .... only those with the will to live continue to do so.  Fuck your numbers, if you feel good enough to go, then do it!!!

Justa quick one ragarding  "Peru,,, shoudl i go? "
What if you travel with a wife and a kids , and want to keep your desease secret ?
I mean every puting out of a line in front of other passengers and a tourist guide would probably be a potential discosure danger..............and what about drug packages in that kind of scenario.........Sustiva and Ziagen are very similar by colour and size to a Centrum multivitamins......or is it a bad idea......?
On second thought I would put this on a topic   "Peru,,, shoudl i go? "    too.............thanks anyway

I've probably travelled to 15 foreign countries with tons of HIV medications, always in their original bottles.  Never once have been queried about them.

However, if you don't put them in their original bottles expect to be pulled aside as an ecstasy dealer or something.

Sh.... on second thought a Epivir really does look like ecstasy ! Yikes !

hello ello.

I've thought long and hard about this and I definitely think you should go.  Also, I've decided I also want a gourd but just so you don't think I'm any ordinary Joe, a beautiful handpainted BIRDHOUSE would be lovely.
