NZ Earthquake
« on: February 21, 2011, 08:16:54 pm »
My son has and his family have lost their home, my son here just called to tell us their area had been hit hard and their house had gone, his friend called him but then they lost comunications, we can't get in touch with them, and it seems they can't get hold of my grandsons school...this really scares me.

I won't call so you can keep your line free in case he's trying to reach you.

You and your family will be in my thouhts too.

Let us know when you can.

Thank you all for your support, it's a terrible feeling not knowing where your family is in a time of disaster, not being able to get hold of them, thinking the worst.

65 dead so far and rising, my heart goes out to those who have lost their loved ones, but I'm happy that our family are all together again and well, they have managed to get out of the city and are staying with a friend who lives about an hour away.

Our grandson is upset because he started "big" school 3 weeks ago and is worried that his school will fall down and he won't see his friends again...it's hard tryig to explain to a 5 year old that it will be OK in the end.

The kids have lost their home, so it will take time and money to get them back on their feet..but we will do it however long it takes.

Thank you all again for your suport and kind thoughts.

Thanks again for all your support...more and more bodies are being brought out from under the rubble, a young mum died with her baby in her arms as she ran out of a building, she was hit by falling concrete, but the baby was saved..so sad, but there are many survivors who have been rescued after a cold wet night under buildings.

Hope..your friend in Auckland will be fine , as far  as I kow they didn't even feel the quake.

It will be awhile before anything is done for the kids, insurance wise, there are families still waiting for their insurance and for their homes to be fixed after the last quake, so it's not going to be any time soon for the kids, the best we can hope for is they can get in and retrieve some of their clothing, especially for the kids, their furniture has pretty much gone the whole house is covered in Liquefaction and water is coming in through the roof they once had..it rained all night.

We will have to find them new furniture and in time a decent rental until they can get back on their feet, they are unable to get to work, so living expenses will soon become a problem..but even so they are more than aware that they are one of the luckier families.

We may have to go up at the weekend to look after the grandkids so our boy and his wife can get into the house (hopefully) and see what they can slavage, they don't want the kids to see the damage, our grandson is quite traumatized by the whole thing, he is only 5 bless him, and very scared.

Once again thank you all for your support and kind thoughts.

Aroha to you all

I just wanted to add my voice to all the others here.  I'm glad you and your family are safe.  I'm so sad for all the people who have lost loved ones.  And I hope it won't take too terribly long to rebuild and recover.

Have been thinking about you all night, Jan.
I'm glad your family is OK, despite their losses.
As you say, it will take time to heal the trauma and rebuild, but knowing NZ'ers they will pull together and help each other through this (and then go on and win the World Cup).
We're all thinking of you and our friends across the ditch.

Jan-

I saw this last night, and I worried for you all night. I am so relieved that you are safe and that your son and his family made it out alive, when so many others did not. Please keep us posted as to how things go there. Good luck to you and yours.

Alll my Love, Carl

Just saw some very dramatic footage on TV.. it really was a serious quake. Having gone through the last one big in San Francisco I would never want to be in another one.

I also just found out on FB that one of our support group members is still in Christchurch .. he was back there for a holidays and to see his family. Fortunately he's fine and more fortunate their home has suffered limited damages; and he will come back to Hong Kong as soon as flights resume and he can get a seat.

You guys are in my thought Jan.. hugs, Shaun

I've just spoken with Jan on the telephone. She asked me to tell people that she is headed to Christchurch tomorrow to be with her kin and may be out of contact for a bit.

As she's noted above her family is all accounted for.

Most of you have followed the news reports and you know that Christchurch has been flattened. The magnitude of this disaster cannot be overstated. New Zealand has a population of just under 4.5 million people and so the rising death toll in Christchurch is a terrible loss.

En Zed has had an horrific few months. The earthquakes combined with the Pikes River mine disaster has taken a dreadful toll on that proud people.

I know I can say without fear of contradiction that today we are all Kiwis.  :-*  :'(

Thanks for the update, Matty. Happy to hear she and her family are well and accounted for.

Hoping for some respite for them and all New Zealanders from this deluge of terrible stuff.

The World News tonight showed an unreal, warlike vision of Christchurch and her thoroughly devastated population.  These poor folks have just been totally decimated and the scenes are one of an apocalypse.  What strong, decent and humble folks our friends down under appear to be (and we know our beloved Jan is)  and they are just so beaten, it is so heartbreakingly sad.

The last earthquake was thankfully minor and I contributed to the New Zealand Red Cross and will certainly be able to do that little bit again, all I can do from New York.  I hope others here who are able will pitch in for Jan's adopted homeland and all the lovely people there.  One of our friends here, Curtis, visited a few years back and I remember he said that besides the countries great beauty the people in New Zealand were generally attitude free.  They sure seem to have great strength and courage and I don't know if I could ever handle such horrror.

With great sadness that I had to post this in my lifetime...

Have been very concerned about you and your family and don't usually monitor the off topic post so I missed the earlier posts.  I was watching CNN the second the earthquake was announced (which was literally minutes after it happened) and my first thought was whether you experienced it and whether you were safe.  I knew you did not live that close to Christchurch but remembered you had family there.  I am relieved they are safe and I am sure the rebuilding process will be slow and perhaps traumatic for your grandchildren.

My prayers are with you, your family and your nation.  We had our schoolchildren offer a minute of silent prayer yesterday.  With global television, even our children feel a connection with the world "down under."
