Probably a silly concern, but a concern nonetheless
« on: February 16, 2012, 11:31:59 pm »
Some time ago, I had been drinking at a football game and went home with a girl I didn't really know. We did not have sex, but there was a lot of mutual masturbation going on. In my drunkenness, I did finger her both anally and vaginally. My concern is that within the hour that we began fooling around I burned the last knuckle of my middle finger with a cigarette, and my memory was too foggy the next day to remember if I used that hand on her or not. I don't ever remember seeing blood, and I did ice the burn for about 15 minutes, but there was some fluid leaking from the wound (like water from a blister).

I did receive testing at 1, 3, and 6 months, all of which were negative, but on the 3 and 6 month tests I was drinking water/swishing water around my mouth within a few minutes of being tested. I didn't think to consider any interference that could have on the test results, but it's just been on my mind to ask some people with experience. Having called the clinic to ask if that can interfere, they kind of laughed at me and didn't take me seriously, which wasn't really appreciated for someone with true concerns. That's what brought me here. I guess what I'd like to know is if any risk exists, assuming all the stars aligned and she really was infected, etc.

I appreciate your input, and this will certainly not be one of those paranoid "I keep asking you redundant questions" threads.

Best regards, and thank you for all your information on this website. It's a great service.

You never had an exposure and didn't need testing.

Fingering, burn or no burn, cuts or no cuts, is absolutely NOT a risk for HIV.

Sexually, HIV is spread by unprotected anal and vaginal sex. Wear a condom for those acts and you will be protected from HIV. Period.

"Many people, especially in the gay community, turn to oral sex as a safer alternative in the age of AIDS. And with HIV rates rising, people need to remember that oral sex is safer sex. It's a reasonable alternative."

AA,

I totally agree with Rodney and JK that you did not have a risk for hiv infection and you didn't need to test over fingering, regardless of the burn on you knuckle.

For future reference, don't worry about swishing water in your mouth before having an oral swab test. If the tests were that easily corrupted, they wouldn't be in use.

Here's what you need to know in order to avoid hiv infection:

You need to be using condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, every time, no exceptions until such time as you are in a securely monogamous relationship where you have both tested for ALL sexually transmitted infections together.

To agree to have unprotected intercourse is to consent to the possibility of being infected with an STI. Sex without a condom lasts only a matter of minutes, but hiv is forever.

Have a look through the condom and lube links in my signature line so you can use condoms with confidence.

ALTHOUGH YOU DO NOT NEED FURTHER TESTING AT THIS TIME, anyone who is sexually active should be having a full sexual health care check-up, including but not limited to hiv testing, at least once a year and more often if unprotected intercourse occurs.

If you aren't already having regular, routine check-ups, now is the time to start. As long as you make sure condoms are being used for intercourse, you can fully expect your routine hiv tests to return with negative results.

Don't forget to always get checked for all the other sexually transmitted infections as well, because they are MUCH easier to transmit than hiv.

Use condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, correctly and consistently, and you will avoid hiv infection. It really is that simple!

A friend of mine recently had her nipples pierced, and the other day we did wind up fooling around a bit. I did receive oral sex from her, but what has me concerned is that the day prior to our fooling around, she had some occasional bleeding from her new piercings. I did suck on her nipples somewhat during the encounter, but I didn't even bring it into consideration that blood could have gotten into my mouth. I have no idea if any blood did get into my mouth in the process -as I wasn't paying attention. Let's just assume it did. I know she's been with a lot of guys, so I'm a little concerned about any possible exposure.

Thoughts?

Getting blood in your mouth is not a risk for HIV infection. You were not at risk from this encounter and you do not need to be tested for HIV.

When it comes to how HIV is transmitted I would direct your attention to the answers given to you previously in this thread.

I will also take this opportunity to caution you. We do not allow people to post endlessly about non risk situations. I therefore draw your attention to the posting guidelines for Am I Infected? which are outlined in our Welcome Thread.
