I saw The Golden Compass. I wasn't as impreesed as some other people I know. The special effects were good as was to be expected but since this is the first of a trilogy, I'd be surprised if they make the next two. I felt it bounced around way too much and was hard to follow.

I get out to theaters very rarely; usually wait until something comes out on DVD.  I would like to go see Juno, though.  And Charlie Wilson's War.  Guess I better hurry.  I should've thought of this before school was getting ready to start up again. :P

Oops almost forgot. I saw The Savages too. This was a pretty funny movie most of the way through. It is abnout a brother and sister that grow closer through having to manage the care of an ailing aged father. Most of the audience was older and there were plenty of chuckles and then you could feel the reality set in as the movie got more serious and it just seemed the things portrayed were all to real a possibility for so many people.

I enjoyed it and it's nominated for a Golden Globe.

Juno, eh? Not really my type of movie. I can think of another Kevin Costner film I didn't like, The BodyGuard. But did love him in The Untouchables......

Yeah I forgot about that one. I didnt much care for it. It was watchable but ehh. <shrugs> it didnt do much for me.
I rarely find a movie that I wont watch all the way thru cause it sucks so bad.

I thought of a really good one from 1987. I cant recall if anyone has already mentioned it. But it is worth mentioning again if it has.

Empire of the sun

Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/v/Wv9rirLk2kA&rel=1

SYNOPSIS:
Steven Spielberg’s EMPIRE OF THE SUN, based on the autobiographical novel by J.G. Ballard, stars Christian Bale as Jim Graham, a British schoolboy separated from his upper-class colonial parents when the Japanese sweep into Shanghai during World War II. Temporarily orphaned, Jim attaches himself to Basie (John Malkovich), a fast-talking American opportunist determined make a buck off the spoils of war. Later, when the two are interned in a prison camp, Jim's boyish fantasies are fueled by the grace and daring of the Japanese fighter pilots whom he comes to idolize despite their enemy status. Spielberg's visually spectacular wartime epic is a testimony to the human will to survive and a child's ability to find wonder even in the midst of horror. Thirteen-year-old Welsh actor Christian Bale is brillant as Jim in his feature film debut. Spielberg himself identified more with Jim, a boy who is obsessed with flying and who experiences the death of his innocence, than with E.T.'s Elliott. After a year of negotiations with the Chinese, Spielberg and his crew were allowed to film in Shanghai, which was virtually unchanged since World War II.

Can't say that I saw that one, Winiroo but it puts me in the mind of The Last Samurai with Tom Cruise or there was another one from back in the day, I think it was called Shogun with Richard Chamberlain in it. There's one something like it on cable called Tai Pan.

I picked this up in the DVD value bin at my local dvd store for $9.95, DEFINATELY worth it :-) fantastic (but long) movie

Ok what is this version of Sweeney Todd with Ben Kingsley in it? How many times has this been redone?

that's just a movie version of the sweeney tale, not a musical. pretty much the same story though. I watched part of it on TV the other night but got bored - no one busted out into any songs. LOL

I love musicals.  I grew up watching Barbara Steisand (sp?) movies with my mom.  "Hello Dolly", "what's up Doc", "Yentel"...just love them all.  I'm not a big Madonna fan, but i could watch "Evita" everyday and never get bored with it.  Is there a "truer" version of Sweeney Todd?  One that is the closest to the Broadway musical? (and just as important: is there a book version?)

I "was" going to see Sweeny Todd but when I realized it was a musical, I'll pass till the dvd.
Not a musical fan here. When my other half puts on THE SOUND OF MUSIC, I make him watch
ITS A WONDERFUL LIFE. He hates that as much as I do S. of M.

Hey Bettytach,
I did see 30 days of night in the theaters and thats why I want it on dvd so bad.
Just something about the dark winter helpless feeling, and no one in the town

Has anyone here seen Atonement?  I have a slight crush on James McAvoy after seeing Last King of Scotland (if you've not seen that one you really, really MUST rent it).

I want to go see Before the Devil Knows You're Dead and City of Men as well.  The latter is by the same folks that did the superlative City of God.

Just watched the HD trailers for "The Dark Knight" (the next batman), and "Prince Caspian" (the next narnia story), and all I can say is hurry up, they look fantastic :-)

Just watched the new "Underdog" movie.  Quite enjoyable ;D  Can't wait for "Prince Caspian" to come out...on DVD.  Hubby is a huge Batman fan and would like to see "The Dark Prince" - again, on DVD. Also like to see the new Indiana Jones movie.  Did you know that charactor is based on a real man named Indiana?  Hubby was reading about it.

I love The Birdcage but loves To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar....I thought Patrick Swayze and John Leguizamo made some pretty good drag queens...Wesley was even convincing but not the cutest drag queen I have seen but not the worse either. I liked Robin Williams part in it and Rupaul as Rachel Tension.

It seemed to be a worthy film, but I'm not sure why I was bored rigid.  Keira 'Shit on a Stick' Knightley needs a good meal, she is painfully thin.

I honestly wish they would make a Part 2 to Wong Foo. I think it would be great. I liked Marie Antoinette if you are speaking on the one with Kirsten Dunst in it. I think it is cute. She has come a long way since Interview with the Vampire.

I don't care so much for drama's or chick flicks. There are exceptions of course. I love The color purple.
But in general my tomboy nature just cant handle all that gooshy crap. LOL

Sorry to read the negative report on 3:10 to Yuma. I have that on my netflix list but the availability has it listed as a "long wait."
Meaning I have to wait a while before they will send it to me.
Rush hour 3 is supposed to come in the mail today. I'm still waiting for Resident Evil and Sunshine to get off the long wait list.

Netflix is annoying me by making me wait for everything I really want to watch. Meanwhile they make me watch the things I'm moderately interested in. That wasn't so much of a problem last year. eehh cross my fingers and hope for some sci-fi fantasy, horror or thrillers to become available.

Rush Hour 3 was predictable, but FUNNY!  Hubby and i were laughing so loud, we had to rewind it because we'd missed 10 minutes of the movie.  We love all the Rush Hours.  We also liked "The 5th Element", but only Chris Tucker.  Another laugh out loud!  You think 3:10 to Yuma will be slow in getting to you, just wait until you see how slow it is to END.  I had such high hopes, too.

We watched the new "Underdog" with the kids last night.  It was really cute!

As I was breezing through my cable guide looking for something to watch after finishing Norbit. On Sundance, I come across a movie that came out in 2004 called "One Missed Call". Now I thought it was a typo or something. So, the one that has just recently been released is a remake of a Japanese movie. Well, color me surprised. Did anyone else know this?

I've never heard of that movie, Queen, but one movie I forgot that I should have listed a long time ago is 'Amadeus.'  I thought that movie was ingenius.

The Japanese version of One Missed Call was actually pretty good. Now I will have to see this recent version just to see if they keep the same storyline. I also thought I would mention that Lucky Number Slevin was quite good too, watched that last night.

Now would you believe that I am sitting here watching The Eye? Yep, Japanese version once again. Uh, can Americans not put enough thought into making their own horror movies? I blame all this on The Grudge. Where is Tobie Hooper, Wes Craven, John Carpenter( is he dead?) and even Stephen King. Speaking of which, has anyone seen The Mist yet?

Oh, I watched this rather odd movie starring James Marsden last night on LOGO, called The 24th Day.  It was about this "straight" guy that thinks this gay guy infected him with HIV, so while he waits for official lab result confirmation he holds the guy (Marsden) hostage in this grimy apartment.

Now that I'm looking it up on imdb.com it says it was filmed in Philadelphia.  Hmm, I missed the first 1/2 hour of it so I'll have to watch it again.

Sat nite even though I was finally getting over whatever intestinal problems I had the last few days, we decided to stay home and just watch the tube. Instead of watching any of the movies  that we had picked up at the library, we got sucked into watching "Pearl Harbor". A pretty good movie! First off, I like war movies (Prvt Ryan is a must-see). Second this flix has got Ben Affleck in it... and he cries  :'( - like in Armmageddon. God I'm a sucker for that crying Ben! :-*

so sunday morning we watched the library movies. Queen Latifah and LL were cute in "Last Holiday". I almost feel asleep during the first part of this flix but at least the payoff in the ending was all good and happy.  ;D(too bad nobody goofed up and misdiagnosed me LOL)

Next movie was called "October Sky". Another feel-good movie. ;) My partner had read the book  (boys build rockets, win science fair, and go on to work at NASA ) but wasn't certain if I'd like it. Why not? I really enjoyed our trip to the Wright-Patterson Airforce Musuem. I like the planes, and rockets, and BOMBS on display there. Of course if my other half had only mentioned that Jake Gyllenhaal was in this movie, we would have watched it Sat nite instead of watching hunky Ben. Ah, Jake!  :-* I like Ben, but I loooove Jake!

Speaking of vampire movies (somebody did somewhere in this thread I'm sure LOL) the other guy in that movie, The 24th Day, is Scott Speedman who plays Michael Corvin in "Underworld: Evolution". Both Underworld movies are very good.  ;)

Tomorrow I'll watch "Thank You for Not Smoking" and return these movies to the library.

Other half and I did a matrix trilogy sitting over the weekend (argh, ending at 2am), they're fantastic in dolby 5.1 :-D (need on bigger tv thou :-)

If we'd started earlier, I could have got the animatrix as well, and watched that between matrix 1 and 2!

I'll give this movie a thumbs up.  ;D
It was fairly short at only an hour and a half. Lampooning lobbyists of all types (cigs, guns, liquor) along with senators and the media, it made me laugh out loud about a dozen times. And any movie that makes you laugh can't be too bad. LOL I really enjoyed watching this one.  ;)

Rush Hour 3 was ok. I didnt get to see the bloopers at the end because my boyfriend was anxious to watch the end of a football game. That sucked.

Next in line for me to watch is The invisible.

Director David S. Goyer's supernatural thriller is an unsettling journey into one man's nightmarish limbo. When high schooler Nick is brutally attacked and left for dead, he regains consciousness only to discover that he's invisible to everyone -- except for a troubled young girl running from authorities. From the producers of The Sixth Sense, this mystery explores the elusive place between the world of the living and the land of the dead.

Sounds interesting to me...

Hubby and I began the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy last night.  We've seen it several times (own all 3 movies) but every time I see them, I find things that I've some how missed in the last 400 times. I tend to understand trilogies better if I can watch them one after the other (1/night).  After a year or so between episodes, I'm totally lost.

I liked Pulp Fiction.  A wee bit gorey at times, but likeable.

Saw Cloverfield here today,

I'd give it a 7.5/10, while showing a Monster smashing a city from the little persons perspective on the street sounds great, take vertigo tablets, coz the camera moves and shakes nearly the entire way through the movie..

It was entertaining, pretty much predictable.. I only found myself scared once in the movie, and being the sicko that I am, I tend to laugh at gore in movies :P

Definitely an interesting looking monster, and some of the male stars are pleasing upon the eyes ::-)

I was amazed to see a trailer for a new STAR TREK MOVIE!!!! (YAYAYAYAYAYYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAY) which allegedly has been held up by the WGA strike ( :'( ) the trailer shows the enterprise being built, upon a planet...

Keep well,

You saw Cloverfield already?  It gets 7.5?  That's good news.  Part of me was prepping for it to be disasterously bad.  I love a good monster.  Dying to know what it looks like.

If it's already screening somewhere, it should be anytime until pirated images and clips are on the web.

Good news about CLoverfield indeed!

I read some advance reviews from Bloody Disgusting and they raved about it.  I personally can't wait since I love a good monster movie!

Thanks though poz1970 for early review!

thank you so very much!

#3 - thank god it will only be a cameo role!!
#5 - Cool and we had already read the news about Syler from Heroes being young Spock

as an interesting tidbit here, if any Trek fans here have ever seen the docu-movie "Trekkies" (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120370/) then you've seen my other half dressed up in his "picard" outfit. (he dressed up for a Trek Convention not jury duty or something weird ROFL) ::)  In this utube clip (http://youtube.com/watch?v=60yHrRQ2g2c ) he's dressed in a "kirk" outfit for our annual Pooltag party.

Hubby and I began the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy last night.
I love those movies too. I could watch them again and again. They were soooo much better than that mind-numbingly boring book by tolkien.

What a great pick. He suits the part visually.

The invisible didn't make it to my mailbox this time instead I got Resident Evil Extinction. Not bad. I enjoyed it. But then again I am a sucker for zombie flicks.
According to Netflix my next movie will be The Bourne Ultimatum. I'm not totally interested in it but Billy wanted to see it. The first two where ok but did not thrill me the same way it did him apparently.

We rented a really cool movie (at least it sounded like it - will let you know tomorrow) that's based on a true story. It's about the massacre of over 140 men, women, and children who were part of a wagon train moving to settle land in the west.  No one knows exactly what happened.  For the longest time, it was assumed they were attacked by Indians.  However, documents found recently suggest that the leader of the Mormon church had them murdered when his son fell in love with the daughter of one of the settlers.  Sounded interesting...I'll let you know.

We also rented "Eastern Promises".  I've never heard of it, but, again, it sounded interesting.  We'll probably watch it tomorrow afternoon / night.  I'll let you know about that one, too.

Hello again. Tonight I saw the Orphanage (Orhanato, El).  Not what you might call mainstream as it is a horror/drama and in Spanish with English subtitles. I thought it was good. Not much horror but there are a few things that had the audience squirming especially the young homosexual that I was sitting next too.

Anyway I was somewhat embarrassed when in one scene a very heavy set man was descending a staircase. He was waddling and some woman way down in the fron row laughed. Just her. Then the young man next to me laughed which prompted me to laugh and that in turn caused me to let out this bodacious fart. Lots more laughter! Good thing it was dark in there as I know I must have been red.

The theater was packed and this film is now showing on two screens there to big audiences. I recommend it but it isn't really a shocking type of film, though it is very well put together.

I rented Sunshine last night. The only good thing I can say about this film is that Cillian Murphy is in it. That us one HOT man. I suppose science fiction fans will like it but it had to many holes in the plot for me to enjoy it  ::)

I was just reminded today about a wonderful movie that I can't believe I forgot to mention: Shawshank Redemption.  A wonderfully made and acted movie.  "You either get busy living, or you get busy dying."

September Dawn (the movie I mentioned in my last post) was really, really good.  The special features included commentary by the decendents of the 12 babies / children who werent' killed.  Out of 140 men, women, and children, only those 12 lived.  It's about the Mountain Meadows Massacre that occured on September 11, 1857.  We've done some research since watching the move...very interesting stuff.

We'll watch "Eastern Promises" tonight and I'll let you know.
