What type of disability is this????
« on: October 01, 2012, 01:00:52 pm »
So I was granted disablity with a very nice lump sum of back pay. But when I received my award letter it titles, Retirement, Survivors & Disability Insurance. It does not specify anywhere in the letter if it is SSI or SSDI or the type of disability im receiving . It also states I will receive payment each month on or about the fourth Wednesday of each month. Mind you I live in Cali

AFAIK, SSDI submits payments on the third of each month. I think you must have SSI.

I believe if it's the same Wednesday each month, then it's full SSD.  SSI and a combo of SSI/SSD payments don't follow the same schedule.

It's SSDI.  SSI only pays on the first of the month.

But as Ms. P said, SSDI pays on the 3rd of the month.  Just answer this, op: are you going to get Medicare?  Because if you are, then it's SSDI; otherwise it's SSI.

SSA went through some changes with the dates they pay SSDI benefits.  For most people it is on the 3d.  For some it is another date later in the month, but always the same.  SSDI pays the benefit from the previous month, so for April you get the money from March, for instance.
SSI determines eligibility at the beginning of each month (ie does the beneficiary meet income/asset limits), and pays the month in advance.  This is financial eligibility, not medical eligibility, which is determined once (mostly).
So it's a trick of the trade to look at the payment date--pays on the first, or some other date--and determine which program is paying the benefit.  If you use Medicare as the determiner, you'd be waiting a while because it doesn't kick in for 24 months.

I know it takes a while for Medicare to kick in.  I was simply saying that to determine which type of disability it is when there's a question, just answer if you will be eligible for Medicare or not, even if it is in the future (he should know now if he will eventually be eligible). If so, that means a person has SSDI.  If not, then SSI.

(he should know now if he will eventually be eligible).
Not necessarily.  Not everyone who gets on SSDI stays on it.  Most people who return to work do so within the first years, so they may never get Medicare.  So SSA doesn't usually say anything other than a general statement of "You may become eligible for Medicare" but they say the same to everyone on either program.
Your observation is good.  If you get Medicare, you get SSDI (or retirement).  If you automatically got Medicaid, you get SSI.  The problem is, many people get both, or all four.

People who receive only SSI don't get Medicare.  I understand people can get all 4, but people who receive SSDI, who also get SSI, only get SSI because their SSDI isn't enough to get the usual lower level of SSDI and SSI is a supplement.  My friend's son gets both SSDI and SSI, but they're both very low.  He also receives Medicare and Medicaid, but gets Medicare due to being eligible for SSDI.

I'm guessing the op isn't thinking about returning to work at this point.  I've never heard of someone who gets only SSI being told "you may get Medicare."  If the op has been told he will be eligible for Medicare after the waiting period, then whether or not he's going to receive SSI is irrelevant.  The majority of the money will come from SSDI, with SSI supplementing.

Of course I don't know the op's personal situation.  And when I went on disability, almost 20 years ago, Medicare Part A was automatic, and the waiting period for part B was a year.  And of course at that time there was no Part D.

I'm only speaking from years of experience of not only receiving disability benefits, but also dealing directly with SSA, and having several clients, from my recent employment,  on disability.  I also notice the op has not returned to this thread to let us know whether or not he will be eligible for Medicare.
