What happened to the ignore functionality ?
« on: March 31, 2011, 08:05:00 pm »
I was reading some threads and saw some posts of an individual I had put on my ignore list years ago.
Then I noticed the ignore button was no longer available.
What happened ?

It's the newer, gentler, kum-ba-ya'y verion of AIDSMeds. Instead of ignoring each other we are to embrace each other's differences.

Why is this posted in the Living forum? This should be in off topic as it has nothing to do with living with HIV. If experienced users can't post in the right forum, how can we expect new folks to understand the rules?

I honestly wasn't sure what forum to post it in. Most online forums have a forum specifically for forum issues. Oddly, this one doesn't.

I have only one person on ignore. Reading his posts was at best slightly annoying and at worst downright offensive. I have not been on that much so I didn't notice that I would now have to face the music and actually read his dreary, irrelevant rants. Oh well.

Madbrain is someone I'd miss, though. He's so smart and talented and level-headed and ballsy. How many people do you know who would fight for the right to have  a license plate saying HIVPOZ?

I'm curious to know who Madbrain was ignoring. I think the person I'm ignoring has the most ignores of anyone on the site so I'm not alone.

I have never ignored anyone on this forum, not even in the PM's ...I just don't have the heart to, and that's not the way I roll  ;) you all just have to have lived in California to understand what it's like to have HIV/AIDS, it's a little different and a lot of FUN.... 'Mad, I do hope you don't stop posting in this forum, it just wouldn't be the same without you  ;)

Why let someone else's posts control your ability to interact on these forums?  There are people I detest here but for the most part I disregard the things they say.  Out of curiosity I would love to have known who the people were who had me on ignore and I will admit that the only person I had on ignore was Etay because I got exhausted trying to convince him to change his mind.

I've never used the ignore button on anybody.  If I did, how would I know when they're talking about me?  Just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean they're not after me.

::SIGH::

Another thread about ignoring, un-ignoring, and the delicate sensitivities of a certain and selected group of people around here.  This pansy attitude of some members never seems to change... So... fucking... tedious.

Nobody forces anyone to read what somebody else has written, all that it takes is a fucking scroll of a mouse or a goddamned click on the  browser's back button.

And I for sure will not be missing the individual who claims that he won't be coming by these forums just because the ignore function was disabled.

I honestly wasn't sure what forum to post it in. Most online forums have a forum specifically for forum issues. Oddly, this one doesn't.

We actually have a couple of threads, to report various system issues in the off topic form and if you had bothered to look, I'm sure you would have found them.

Well said, Rev.

I mean really...we ALL have stuff that we have to put up with in this forum, whether it's whiner threads like this one, endless pompous entries from the priviledged and self indulgent...or simply a series of rather dubious tales of sexual exploits from someone who, if I recall correctly, is about as attractive as Phyllis Diller's twat with a personality that's about as appealing as a fart in a bath tub.

And yet we all manage to carry on.

The funny thing is...we all know that none of these people REALLY ignore the people they are complaining about.  By their own admission, they find them so compelling that they cannot resist reading everything they say.

Yeesh.

AIDS isn't for sissies.

Really, I mean really, all you have to do is skip over posts that you don't want to expose your overly sensitive self too.  I just wonder when we had the ignore feature if those that used it frequently were into "group think" in a big way and when someone dissented they were ignored.

lol Skeebo your funny  ;D

on the discussion I have to agree, I think the ignore function was not needed.  I never put anyone on ignore though, I like to read what everyone has to say.  Everyones opinion is unique, and brings a new perspective too the conversation.

I've been ignored once, and all I can say to that person is if u dont like what I have to say then just scroll past me, or ignore any threads I start.  Or if u have a problem with me, just pm me and we can work it out.

Who the fuck needs a ignore button to ignore someone , you should practice ignoring without a mechanical device in case you ever need to ignore someone in real life . They will only laugh at you if you are punching an imaginary button and screaming I cant hear you ... so will the folks here when they know you are reading post of people you have on ignore .

I remember doing that to my brother on road trips.  Mom and dad would just ignore us both and let us work it out the best we could.

Just think, that stupid ignore function probably started in a brainstorming meeting in software development then became a mandatory requirement for other groups when it hit production.  Somebody got paid big bucks to bring it to forums like the one we are on now.

Oh I see how it works now ... for an ignore function to be affective people must be actively able to see or hear that you are ignoring them . That must be why people are always telling other people on here they are ignoring them , interesting  ;D

Maybe.  But if you ignore someone, by simply not reading their posts, are you "really" ignoring them.  Is a requirement of officially "ignoring" someone, predicated on the use of a forum function?  Could you do it manually instead and if so, is it an "official" ignore?

Sorta like, does an ignore in your mind, make a noise in the forums?

The most interesting thing here is that a lot of people that use the ignore button still can't stay away from the ones they're ignoring. How many times have we seen someone say they're ignoring someone else, only to start screaming about something the ignored person posted? ::)

Another thread about ignoring, un-ignoring, and the delicate sensitivities of a certain and selected group of people around here.  This pansy attitude of some members never seems to change... So... fucking... tedious.

I feel the word "tedious" is a direct remark against me--a way to describe being like Ted.  Where is the ignore button..lol.

Seriously, I have never ignored anyone on purpose.  I did have one member on ignore somehow by accident.  I don't even know how it happened.  Did the ignore button use to be right next to the person's username in threads?  I must have clicked ignore by accident or something.  I took them off ignore as soon as I realize it.  Mad may have had a really bad experience with a member (not just a small spat, but something very personal), so I could understand that.  But, I agree that for normal spats, you can just skip what they said.  I've gotten angry with some things people said to the point where I could feel my blood pressure rising--that feeling where you can feel your heart beat in your ears and they get all red.  But, I have not been so upset with someone that I wouldn't be friendly with them in a few days.  I guess I'm use to having big fights with family and then all is better in a few days.

I think it's a shame the 'ignore user' function is no longer available. This is one of the few forums I use where it proved to be extremely useful.

I thought the ignore functon was only temporarily disabled.   Is that not correct?

I had never used it myself,  but apparently others miss it.

I believe that's correct.

I think this was Tim's last comment on the issue..

Nowhere did I say that I was permanently pulling the plug on the ignore function

The difference between ignore in the real world and here is that in the real world you can choose to not be near someone, here you're stuck in small rooms with chatter going on around you.

When I think about it I actually have an ignore list in real life. There are a few people who I refuse to be near. To the point of not going to an event if I know they will be there because I don't want to get stuck listening to their dribble. Now if you could get a mute button in real life and be able to use it on selected people I'd be all for that.

There is no scroll wheel in real life... no comparison.  I use it all of the time here to avoid moronic drivel posts.

I'm curious if anybody really does have an issue with members using the 'ignore' button?  I don't use it, but why would I care if somebody else did / does?  It kinda seems like some don't like others being able to ignore.

I don't care if someone uses it -- you must have missed it, but the conflama was about forum members who used the ignore button and then felt the need to announce it over and over in various threads in the most astounding example of internet passive aggressive behavior.

Now tell me, which is the most offensive -- offensive commentary or offensive passive aggressive behavior?

There are some folks who have me on "ignore", which is actually pretty funny when you think about it.  For those who know me, can you imagine someone feeling the need to "ignore" me?  As if I am that threatening or intimidating...LOL
