Welcome to the "Do I Have HIV?" POZ forum.

This special section of the POZ forum is for individuals who have concerns about whether or not they are HIV positive. Individuals are permitted to post up to three questions or responses in this forum.

Ongoing participation in the "Do I Have HIV?" forum (posting more than three questions or responses) requires a paid subscription, with secure payments made via PayPal.

A seven-day subscription is $9.99, a 30-day subscription is $14.99 and a 90-day subscription is $24.99.

Anyone who needs to post more than three messages in the "Do I Have HIV?" forum -- including past, present and future POZ Forums members -- will need to subscribe, with secure payments made via PayPal.

Swallowed Blood....Risk???

Hello,
Thank you for taking the time to hear my situation.  I appreciate any responses.  Yesterday I had a meeting with some friends.  I shook everyones hand and walked to my vehicle.  Upon reaching my vehicle I grabbed my car keys and noticed a couple (3-4 drops) on my finger.  Without hesitation or much thought I sucked the blood off and swallowed it.  Thinking that I probably had a cut on my finger... The walk to my vehicle was a quarter mile.  If there was HIV blood on my finger, would it survive that exposure??? 

Needless to say I had zero cuts anywhere.  I have a small cut on the bottom side of my lip (from chewing gum and accidentally bit my cheek. ).

I am just wondering what my risk is?  I swallowed the blood not knowing it wasn't mine.  I don't know if it came into contact with my cheek, it all happened so fast.  I looked online and many sites on yahoo state I had a risk.  If this is a risk, when should I test???  Again, thank you for your time.

If anyone has some information/advice it would be greatly appreciated.  Wondering if I should get tested.  I read the information before posting, could not find information about swallowing blood.  Please help...

Thank you rapidrod for the response.  Could you please elaborate why there was no risk.  I read in your information section that HIV can be tranmittes via blood, I had a cut in my mouth and the blood was not mine...  I just want to make sure I understand why you believe no risk at all.  Thank you again for responding.

Blood exposed to air, ph change and temp change renders HIV inactive.

So essentially the walk to the vehicle with the blood exposed to air killed (HIV) if it was present???  So there was no chance, that it could be active and got into my blood stream through the cut in my mouth?  Clearly you wouldn't test/worry about this?  I don't know how true this is; however, I read tha some people have been infected by blood splashing in their eyes?  How is my situation different, please do not feel I am arguing with you. Clearly you have a great understanding, I'm just trying to understand how my situation is not risky.  I grew knowing that HIV has it's highest concentration in blood, I have ALWAYS practiced safe sex, I truly thought I had a cut in my finger and it really creeped me out to think that i swallowed someone else's blood...  I'm just a little worried.

I understand you feel there was no risk. This situation is just so stressful & confusing. You read one thing that says HIV is transmitted through blood and cuts in the mouth (both of which I had), then you hear that the air makes it inactive.  So there was no way to activate it once inside the mouth???

This isn't about our having "feelings" that there was no risk. Your saliva has over a dozen elements and proteins which very effectively prevent the transmission of viable HIV. That's a fact. Not a feeling.

Thank you sir for responding.  So that's it. No risk. Swallowed blood with small cut in mouth can't transmit.  Is it because the walk outside or because of the stuff in the mouth???  No reason to worry anymore or even test?!?!?!?

Hi there

Andy is right, not only is saliva not infectious, but it also contains over a dozen different proteins and enzymes that damage hiv and render it unable to infect.

When we talk about cut's we are refering to major wounds that allow infected blood to get into the blood stream...you really don't have anything to worry about.

I came across this online:

"Blood in the mouth carries an even lower risk. The lining of the mouth is very protective, so the only way HIV could enter the bloodstream would be if the person had a cut, open sore or area of inflammation somewhere in their mouth or throat (if the blood was swallowed). Even then, the person would have to get a fairly significant quantity of fresh blood (i.e. an amount that can be clearly seen or tasted) directly into the region of the cut or sore for there to be a risk. HIV is diluted by saliva and easily killed by stomach acid once the blood is swallowed."

so I understand that after I swallowed the blood HIV would not be able to infect me; however, I did have 4 drops that I could see and easily tasted.  I know I didn't have a huge wound in my mouth but I did bite my cheek and it was bleeding before.  I don't understand...

Anyone who continues to post excessively, questioning a conclusive negative result or no-risk situation, will be subject to a four week Time Out (a temporary ban from the Forums). If you continue to post excessively after one Time Out, you may be given a second Time Out which will last eight weeks. There is no third Time Out - it is a permanent ban. The purpose of a Time Out is to encourage you to seek the face-to-face help we cannot provide on this forum.
