Guilty Musical Pleasures...
« on: February 13, 2007, 01:46:07 am »
We're all friends here.  I'm curious to know what bands or singers everyone listens to that aren't deemed "cool" by pretentious people.  You know... the "dance around your house when no one is around music."  The music you're embarrassed to admit that you like.

Mine are as follows.

The Fifth Dimension (I'm listening to "Up, Up, and Away" right now, and it's probably one of the coolest songs ever written.)
ABBA
The Carpenters (Shut up!  Shut up!  All of you!)
Stevie Wonder
and... I can't believe I'm admitting this... Justin Timberlake.

Don't listen to those people!

I just admitted to liking Karen Carpenter.  And yet... I still be a rock god.   ;D

I like your taste in music.  I  have a very nice instrumental version of  "Up, Up and Away" done by Laurindo Almeida.  I also like Percy Faith, and a few other obscure orchestra leaders.

The concept of a "guilty pleasure" is oh so wrong to me.

Cyrenaic hedonism. Mmm, nice words.

I am too tired to type any more. Good night.

Jay
Her finely-touched spirit had still its fine issues, though they were not widely visible. Her full nature, like that river of which Cyrus broke the strength, spent itself in channels which had no great name on the earth. But the effect of her being on those around her was incalculably diffusive: for the growing good of the world is partly dependent on unhistoric acts; and that things are not so ill with you and me as they might have been, is half owing to the number who lived faithfully a hidden life, and rest in unvisited tombs.

I like listening to some Barry White or Marvin Gaye every now and again. But I don't neccessarily get embarrassed by playing it full blast in my car. When some comments, I simply tell them that because I drive a classic car, (anything 20 yrs or more is considered a classic)so that entitles me to play it.

There are quite a few CDs that I like that other people would not appreciate:

Dead or Alive, Evolution: The Hits, It's gayest music ever... and I mean that in the best possible way.

Missing Persons, Remixed Hits, The songs went from kitsch to kickin'

William Shatner, Has Been, I thought this was a joke but with artists like Ben Folds, Aimee Mann and Joe Jackson on board it's surprisingly good.

Tom Jones, Reloaded, Ridiculously fun songs. I can't listen to "It's Not Unusual" without unbuttoning my shirt and bobbing back and forth.

:o  :D  :D I wanna see you karaoke to that!!! Too cute!!!!

I'll have to say REO Speedwagon!!  :D  :D (They were ahead of their time I say)

Edited to add 70s stuff:

LOL - Cat Stevens. Thanks Lwood. He's the one that sings "Oo baby baby it's a wild world" la la la

and I like that song that goes "Our house is a very very fine house, with 2 cats in the yard, life used to be so hard, now everything is easy 'cos of youuuu" (The word Cat reminded me)

Olivia Newton John, KC & The Sunshine Band, The Bee Gee's

And tons of 80s stuff: like T'Pau ("Heart & Soul" LOL!)

Johnny Cash...  the original Goth if you ask me.

Cat Stevens,  even though he's on the No Fly list.

Emenim, homophobic maybe but he raps pretty well for a white boy just like

Kid Rock,  Bawitababa bang de bang.. indeed

which reminds me of a cute little CD I just compiled called " the Otomatopia Collection" ( from LTunes  :))

  • Surfin Bird ( Trashmen
    Bawitababa ( kid Rock)
    Atomic Dog
Jesus built my Hotrod ( Ministry)
Mmmmmmm Hmmmmm  ( Crash Test Dummies)
Hooked on a Feelin' ( Blue Swede)
Eeep Opp Orp AH AH, from the Jetsons ( Saturday Mornings Greatest Hits )

Pretty damn immature, but I cant make it through the disc without cracking up.
"Fortunately, I Keep My T Cells Numbered For Just Such An Emergency"

I am embarrassed to say this but

I sing along to Jennifer lopez

I know I know, I should be ashamed of myself but I can't help it.

Her "I'm Real" and "Get Right" songs are just too catchy for me.

I guess I beat most of you for weirdness. The only "modern" music I listen to is the Grateful Dead.

I mainly listen to the kind of music I play: obscure Appalachian fiddle music from the '20s and '30s.

The Carpenters (Shut up!  Shut up!  All of you!)...

The Carpenters?  You can drop any pretense of being cool immediately.   You might as well have said Pat Boone...

My biggest guilty pleasure is Bananarama even though I haven't heard one of their songs in years (since this obsession occurred in the time of LPs I have no replacement CDs and I hate playing LPs now [one side lasts 20 minutes and you have to get up and flip the bugger over...]).

I used to exercise with Bananarama playing because the tunes all had good tempos for keeping on the move.  Also, most of the songs are in the 3 minute range so I could time my reps and move to another exercise with each song.   Or the B52s, which usually made me dance too much between sets, but they're certainly not a guilty pleasure.  They are gods.

The only other guilty pleasure I have is a Pat Benatar CD I bought to replace an LP.  "My clone sleeps alone" is one of my favorite songs.

I love the Anthology of American Folk Music!

The old, weird America!   ;D

"First night that I got home
drunk as I could be
There's another mule in the stable
Where my mule oughta be.

Come here, honey!

Explain this thing to me.
How come another mule in the stable
Where my mule oughta be?

Oh crazy, oh silly!
Can't you plainly see?
Nothin' but a milk cow
Where your mule oughta be.

I've traveled this world over
Million times or more
Saddle on a milk cow's back
I've never seen before."

Christine

How dare you include My Fair Lady as a guilty pleasure!!??  It's the only musical I ever liked (besides Bye, Bye, Birdie) until I was well into my 20s and found Stephen Sondheim.

"Attend the tale of Sweeney Todd.
His skin was pale and his eye was odd.
He shaved the faces of gentlemen
who never thereafter were heard of again.
He trod a path that few have trod
did Sweeney Todd
the demon barber of Fleet street."

Well, lets see......no particlular artist for dancing around the house........I just tune in (via internet) to cajun music out of local radio stations in Lafayette, LA.......but the dogs get really worked up and start biting at my pant legs which makes it even more fun.
Also Vince Gill and love to listen to Dead Can Dance now and again.

Oh, how I wish I'd remembered to get my late mother's copy of Mrs. Miller's hits when we were going through her possessions (my mother's possessions, not Mrs. Miller's).

Jeromy,

TODD: (spoken) These are desperate times,
Mrs. Lovett, and desperate measures are called for!
LOVETT: Here we are, now! Hot out of the oven!
TODD: What is that?

LOVETT:
It's priest. Have a little priest.
TODD:
Is it really good?
LOVETT:
Sir, it's too good, at least!
Then again, they don't commit sins of the flesh,
So it's pretty fresh.
TODD:
Awful lot of fat.
LOVETT:
Only where it sat.
TODD:
Haven't you got poet, or something like that?
LOVETT:
No, y'see, the trouble with poet is
'Ow do you know it's deceased?
Try the priest!

TODD: (spoken) Heavenly!
Not as hearty as bishop, perhaps,
but then again, not as bland as curate, either!

LOVETT:
And good for business, too -- always leaves you wantin' more!
Trouble is, we only get it on Sundays!

Lawyer's rather nice.
TODD:
If it's for a price.
LOVETT:
Order something else, though, to follow,
Since no one should swallow it twice!
TODD:
Anything that's lean.
LOVETT:
Well, then, if you're British and loyal,
You might enjoy Royal Marine!
Anyway, it's clean.
Though of course, it tastes of wherever it's been!
TODD:
Is that squire,
On the fire?
LOVETT:
Mercy no, sir, look closer,
You'll notice it's grocer!
TODD:
Looks thicker,
More like vicar!
LOVETT:
No, it has to be grocer --
It's green!

Angela Lansbury is one of the most amazing actors ever.  Just watching the Manchurian Candidate should convince anyone!!

Boo,

Nothings gonna harm you, not while I'm around, nothing's gonna harm you, no sir, not while I'm around! Demons are prowling, every where, nowadays...nothings gonna harm you...not while I'm around!

Not to worry, not to worry, I may not be smart, but I aint dumb! Being close and being clever, aint like being true, I won't need to, I won't never, hide a thing from you...like some! Nothings gonna harm you, not while I'm around, nothing's gonna harm you...not to worry mum!

Do you promise?  Yumm!!

"City on fire!!  City on fire!!
Lunatics yelling at the wind!
It's the end of the world!
City on fire!"

I really enjoy most of the country and western songs...not so  much the "new" hard rock types but the "classics like Dolly, Waylon , Willie, and the boys....also high on the listen  list is Tina Turner.....wow what a singer and a great tour show...ABBA can be good for a short while..great for falling asleep after a long day.....

I miss my 8track player and my "new cassettes"   I have transfered or bought new versions of my favorites to a CD......haven't progressed to MP3 player yet...what happened to Anne Murray?

Falling asleep to ABBA?  How could you?

My 1994 Nissan pickup has a cassette player so I grabbed my ghetto blaster and recorded several tapes from CDs.  I'd forgotten what a pain in the arse tapes are.  Luckily my parents were too cheap to buy an 8 track player or, for that matter, BetaMax or VHS players, a CD player, and certainly never a DVD player, so my major music investment was LPs and cassette tapes.  My first CD player was 1996 so I held out a long time.

But I digress off-topic... excuse me.

NICKY
Well, okay, but just so you know --

(sung)

If you were gay
that'd be okay.
I mean 'cause, hey,
I'd like you anyway.

Because you see,
if it were me,
I would feel free
to say that I was gay
but I'm not gay.

ROD
Nicky, please! I am trying to read...
What?!

NICKY
If you were queer
I'd still be here,
year after year
because you're dear
to me.
And I know that you
would accept me too,
if I told you today
"Hey! Guess what,
I'm gay!"
But I'm not gay.

I'm happy
just being with you.
So what should it
matter to me
what you do in bed
with guys?

ROD
Nicky, that's GROSS!

NICKY
No, it's not!
If you were gay
I'd shout hooray!
And here I'd stay,
But I wouldn't get
in your way.
You can count on me
to always be
beside you every day,
to tell you it's okay,
you were just born
that way,
and, as they say,
it's in your DNA,
you're gay!

ROD
But I'm not gay!

NICKY
If you WERE gay.

ROD
Argh!

Hadn't thought about this one in years. Thanks for the smile! I needed it tonight.

If I was them, swinging from a rafter.  They would have to be pretty shameless to show their faces in public again, after that assault on pop music.

Can I buy a clue. I'm sure this incident happened awhile ago, but what happened? And whatever happened to Lisa Stansfield?
