A Salute to Remember
« on: August 14, 2011, 05:46:17 pm »
Stephen and I attended the Montreal Gay Pride Parade today and experienced something truly magical.  The parade and festivals are promoted by the gay community, but everyone comes to the parade.  Young, old, gay, straight, you name it with about every culture covered.  The parade travels down a large boulevard and there were thousands of people along the two mile parade route.

About half way through the parade, right in the middle of the party floats with the pretty boys and the blaring Gaga music, the entire parade route went silent.  It was as if someone had thrown a switch and all movement and sound stopped.  As soon as the sound stopped, people put starting raising their arms in a fist.  Thousands upon thousands of people thrusting their fists towards the sky.  Why?

To honor all those lost to HIV/AIDS.  It was one of the most powerful things we have ever witnessed.  It gave us goosebumps.  After this powerful moment of silence, the switch was thrown again and the parade resumed never missing a beat.  I wish you all could have been there.

I missed it because of my labirynthitis...but my friends made sure they showed me pictures and I watched some parts of it on tv! I was very proud that the lady who was leading the parade this year is a woman who has fought so hard for gay rights in Africa! I wish I could have been there too!
I always get very emotional at the Montreal gay pride when the group marches in remebrance of those who died of HIV/AIDS

It gave me goosebumps reading it!! I never had any friends that died of HIV/AIDS. I know of someone who is struggling with meds and you guys here! I could only imagine loosing someone from HIV/AIDS unlike some of you here who survived the 80's.  May all who have died of HIV/AIDS rest in peace.

HIV is certainly character-building. It's made me see all of the shallow things we cling to, like ego and vanity. Of course, I'd rather have a few more T-cells and a little less character. Randy Shilts
