What a job,..What a mess !

Yesterday I decided to remove all my window film, from my car. The car is a 2001, and 6 years of Florida sun and heat, was really destroying the film. It was getting all bubbly, hard to see through.

I decided the best way to try this, was to remove the glass from the car. So,,,, one door at a time, ( I have a four door) I removed the glass. Took about 20 minutes per door. I brought the glass upstairs and placed it in the bathtub, ran some very hot water over it, and with no problem at all the sheet of film came off each glass section very easily with very little residue to clean up.


So far I am happy.



Now the back windshield. This is quite another story. Since I can't remove it, I decided to get inside the car all scrunched up, and started razor blading the hell out of the film.( The back window was the worse, I had a difficult time seeing out that one)

Well, It's a lot easier to remove, when the glass is out, because now it's so bad, I can't see out of it at all.

And the bad part is, I was trying to be carefull, but I cut through a couple of the rear window defroster lines, while in the process.   :P  :o


Monday, I think I am going to have to call an auto- glass place, see how much it is to have a new ( used) glass installed in the rear. There's a place I see advertised, where they come to your house and install it.

 UPDATED: As of April, 2nd 2024,Viral load Undetectable.

Lymphocytes,total-3305 (within range)

cd4/cd8 ratio -0.31

You know Ray if some of those kids in the neighborhood should happen to break your windshield while playing ball.....

You can buy little bottles of metallic paint to fix the heater elements on the rear window. They look like bottles of nail polish and you just paint it on to make good the damaged bits.

Ray sorry to hear about the poor result on the rear window...I live in Texas and ahve had several windows  de-fi;med over the years...just a few months ago I had the glass shop clear two windows...they charge $10 ea   and the job was done in an hour......fixing the defroster grid is a different story...not as easy as it sounds on those do-it yourself kits......

I haven't got a clue as to what is being talked about, but I suppose that's because I live up North in Indiana.  But, after reading all that, I'm glad I don't have to get that done!

 ;)  The thought had crossed my mind, but I'm too honest.  I'm going to procede with the job tomorrow. I removed the rear deck today, so I have more access to the glass. I also bought some film adhesive remover. See how well that cleans everything up. And then, I will have to take a continuity check, to see, just exactly where the breaks are in the wires, and see if there repairable as Vokz mentioned.

Thats window film ( or window tinting) it's installed on the inside of the car, on the glass, helps to keep the sunlight out and the car a little bit cooler !!

Well Ray, if you were to destroy anything, I think the defroster foils would be the least of your concerns where you live....  ;)

Eric beat me to this but I was wondering why you need a rear window defroster in Florida. If you do need it and yours can not be fixed I think there are some you can buy and plug into the cigarette lighter or something like that. You are not the first person to have a rear window defroster fail and not everyone replaces the glass when it happens.

Hello Eric,

Even in Florida you need that rear window defroster, Helps in the summer time also, when the humidity gets high, right after the summer showers, and you have the AC blowing full blast. Helps to clear the foggyness.

theback window will steam up, and you will have to run the defroster, to clear it up. I have had ice a few times through the years, doesn't happen that often though :) so, unfortunately it is a neccessity.


Anyway, calling the glass place in a few minutes to get an estimate...

I totally forgot about that ugly word "humidity"...  Never thought you could have steam shower in the car...  ;D
