Blaming it on HIV.....
« on: May 21, 2010, 02:07:20 am »
Not too long ago I posted a question related to a sinus infection....

Being newly diagnosed I tend to blame everything on HIV..... Someone said they had gotten a paper cut... asked if I thought it was due to HIV....

I thought that was hilarious!

WELL NOW I can finally say I have received a cut and due to HIV!!!  The foil covering the Reyataz pill bottle it's sharp!!!  I opened it, rounded off the edges with my thumb!!! Kaboom!!!!! I cut myself!!!  It's due to HIV and you can't tell me otherwise!!!!!

On to another venting episode.......

I developed Shingles!!!  OMG are they painful!!!  Thank God they have cleared 90 % after being on Valtrex for 10 days....It's still sensitive to touch and sometimes I still experience back pain.....

The progress on my numbers have been as follow:

Dec 2009 CD4 172 VL 35,127
March 2010 CD4 192 VL 1900
May 2010 CD4 248 VL 965

I believe that's the correct info... I get mixed up sometimes.... With Ryan White I have to wait 3-4 weeks to get my VL count but TCell counts come back within a week.....  Haven't posted in long time and thought I would stop by and say hello and hope everyone is doing great!!

Sorry about the cut, but glad your numbers are going in the right direction.  I've hurt myself trying to pop the cap off the Tylenol.

Sorry to hear about the shingles, too.  That sucks.  I've heard that is extremely painful.  I started worrying recently about it, because I was having pain on both sides about 6" down from my armpit.  It felt like a burning pain--like I had been sunburned.  I was so glad it was obviously something else.  I hope you feel better soon.  Sound like you're already seeing relief.

I hear you man, and feel your pain! My nose broke due to HIV.  It happened one day when I was at my friend's house  using his computer to come on AIDSmeds.  He has a shelf above his computer and when I stood up I smacked it with my nose.  I even posted about it right after it happened, telling everyone I was shooting blood everywhere!  So AIDS can break your nose, be careful.

I've heard shingles can be extremely painful, so I am glad it's getting better.

  Take care!

Shingles....Wow...the most terrible thing.  That is definitely of HIV.  I had it, but thanks to Valtrax.  It went off within three weeks leaving a pockmark on my forehead.   :P

A few weeks ago I dropped my pills as I was about to take them, scrambled for them under my desk, and strained a muscle in my lower back.  So I guess that could be HIV-related, or stupidity-related, since I should have just gotten out of my chair instead of twisting and reaching over and down.

Shingles suck.  I just finished a lovely 4-week bout.  While I was lucky that I had just a few blisters on my back and butt, it was painful as hell.  Famvir is what my doc prescribed for me.  I wish he had prescribed a pain killer too.

Regards,

Henry

I just thought it would be a bit of humor since I wanted to blame everything on HIV to actually post something I could technically blame HIV for, something as simple as cutting myself when opening the Reyataz bottle :)

ADAP would only cover 7 days worth of Valtrex so the remaining 3 days was Acyclovir another form of Valtrex I guess....  I still have some blemishes under my nipple area and on my back :( but I guess there are worse things

On another note.... I would highly encourage everyone that has a community pharmacy that deals a lot with HIV meds to change their prescriptions there instead of the big chains.... I had problems with ADAP wanting to verify it and they took a while but the pharmacy crew kept advancing the meds 2 days at a time until they heard back from ADAP on the 6th day!!!  RITE AID my previous pharmacy would have never done that!!! :)  Im so pleased with the Hillcrest Pharmacy!!!

I had intense pain for 3 weeks on my back even after it had been 90% healed but now it's just sensitive on the front... when I take off or put on a shirt.....

Really sorry to hear about the shingles 1228guy.  I know it's a bitch, from personal experience.  The funny thing is, I had shingles 19 years ago when I was 30 years old, 15 years before I became positive, and my partner, who was (and still is) negative, had shingles a few months later than I did at the age of 37.  We were both otherwise healthy at the time.  So shingles doesn't necessarily strike as a result of HIV.

There's now a vaccine for shingles, but it's not yet approved for HIV-positive people, even though we're the ones who need it the most!  Argh!  I know that I keep pestering my doctor to give me the vaccine on an off-label basis, but I haven't persuaded him quite yet.  But, trust me, I'll be first in line to get my shot as soon as it is approved for us pozzies.

Hope your recuperation proceeds well...

This is so the story of my life. My fianc? blames EVERYTHING on HIV. I could never understand how HIV is so devestating to his body even though he's UD. Now I just agree with him.

For about a year I've been getting these mosquito-bite-like red dots sporadically all over my body - not many, but they come and go.   My doctor said it was just hair follicle flared up... until last February when I noticed these ugly, painful, watery rashes: one on the back of my right shoulder, one on my right chest, and one under my right armpit - they're nasty and painful - not forgetting this excruciating internal pain like coming from the inside of my upper right chest - Then the doctor told me it was Shingles and probably because I have a low-immune system.   That same day I found out I'm HIV+  :'(

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis.... It sounds like you are on track and monitoring your health....  I found out Dec 29 2009 so still very new to all of this as well.... The shingles is a negative (GOOD SIGN).... from what was explained to me approx. 20% of people starting HAART will experience shingles within the first 2-3 months of starting.....it's a negative-positive sign that your immune system is rebuilding  OR in some cases your situation is how several people find out they are HIV+, through a diagnosis of shingles followed by an HIV test....

How are you feeling/doing nowadays??

Sorry to hear about your shingles outbreak.  Next to having kidney stones, i think they have to be the most painful ordeal.  I'm glad you are seeing relief.

Also,23 years into being HIV, diagnosed with AIDS in 1999, lately I feel like such a klutz.  Dropping things out of my hands, paper cuts, stuff like that.  I'm thinking about getting a neuro work up.

I like your candor and humor about it all.

I wish you luck, and let us know how we can help!

@1228guy:

I was suspicious of those little red-dots - but I was too scared to find out the truth!  So the Shingles (actually) were the reason I dared myself and took the test.  The diagnosis was very devastating indeed.

I live in Thailand - although Thailand (a developing country) is way ahead of it's neighboring countries when it comes to HIV/AIDS - it is still NOT the USA or Europe where the latest information, support, and meds are more readily available.   I didn't know where to go in the beginning - but by some miracle I found a French doctor who dedicated his life to working with HIV/AIDS patients here in Thailand whose office is just a stone throw away from where I live.

To answer your question: Yes I believe I'm on the right track.   On June 10th I will go for a complete blood test (CD4, %, Liver and kidney functions, etc) and I'm a bit nervous.  I am grateful that I'm alive and hopeful for the future.

I'll let you know my result of course.

Cheers
j

I was prone to sinus infections or should I say I had a continuous infection that went away once I started treatment and I haven't had one since. I had bad allergies too and had to take lots on Benedryl and Claritin but soon dropped those and returning to health now if I could just gain the 15 pounds I lost.
