Tsumami warnings now in effect...

The live footage of the tsunami going over Japan is horrific.

Man.. by sheer coincident I was in a Japanese restaurant having a working lunch when it happened. Then we all heard one of the Japanese chefs talking very loud over the phone and looking really shaken. I do have several friends in Japan but no one lives near the epic center, but lets hope that they're OK.

It looks like the tsunami will be hitting Taiwan just about now.. and from what we hear in Hong Kong those in Taiwan should be OK as they have plenty of time to get moving.

I have Los Angeles set in my phones weather app and I got warning message of tsunami warnings for west coast.  I knew something big must have happened, because you don't see those everyday.  Watching news now and saw video of water pulling away from beach like happened a few years ago.  Seeing first waves to hit Hawaii at 8am.  I hope the death toll is minimal.  8.9!  This is going to be awful.

10-11am EST estimated time tsunami could hit west coast.  I would think it would lose its punch across the Pacific.  Watching video of Japan parliament when quake hit.  Japan saying nuclear power plants were not damaged.

Edited to add more info

After reading some new reports I am getting more worried about my friends and some former colleagues in Tokyo.. :-\

Hawaii was also just hit by a 4.6 quakes.

Somehow my thoughts just link it to all those recent massive fish death, the most recent one in LA. I also wonder if our planet is entering an active earthquakes period.

Sigh...

Unrelated darling -- stick with the eruption of Mount Karangetang hours after the Japanese earthquake. :)  Ring of Fire and all that.  And it's amazing that this is the strongest earthquake in recorded history in a country that is so widely associated with earthquakes.

edit: 2-300 bodies were just found on a beach near Sendai

According to electric power companies, 4.4 million households in northeastern Japan are without power. Nearly 4-million more households are also under a blackout in the Tokyo Metropolitan area.

The Meteorological Agency is warning of more possible tsunami and aftershocks. It says people in areas where major tsunami warnings are in effect should evacuate to safer ground.

I just saw video of skyscrapers swaying back and forth.  Wow!  I know they are designed to do that, but that is scary.  I know our skyscrapers sway, but you don't see or notice it.  I'm trying to find some video on the internet to post.  I also just heard, what I had thought, that after an earthquake over 8.0, we see an increase in earthquakes around the world.

And, hearing the planned nuclear gas release at the nuclear plant has caused radiation outside to be 8 times higher than normal--possibly higher.  I'm hearing experts say Japan has prepared for a big event, but has not prepared for the worst case senerio when it comes to protecting the nuclear power plants.  I'm surprised they don't have more redundant systems.  They have lost control of 2 reactors and this could lead to a melt-down.

This is severely freaky...  The live coverage of the tsunami was .. quite frankly scary, it was hard to grasp the scale of the wave, until you see saw it pick up a house...

Did they say how far it went inland at all?

It does seem like the severity and regularity of natural disasters is changing of late... makes you wonder whats going to happen next!

My heart goes out to all the people affected by this disaster.

Regarding the nuclear power plants - I am amazed the Japanese government ever allowed them, given Japan's history of frequent earthquakes. Fair enough, they're usually much more mild, but a big one like this was always a possibility. And the threat of earthquakes, coupled with their first-hand experience of what nukes can do, both immediately and in the future.... well, it just boggles my mind that they ever went with the nuclear power option. "Clean" power? Potentially deadly, potentially maiming power more like.

I heard a report on BBC news (about an hour ago) that major damage to the reactor where there has been an explosion was "unlikely", but it was also admitted that very little is actually known about what happened and they don't (yet) know exactly what type of explosion it was.

The combined damage of the earthquakes, aftershocks and tsunami is bad enough, I just hope a meltdown isn't added to the fray.

Ann, it's interesting to note that the structures suffered no damage from the quakes, the problems have come from the massive tsunami's that flooded the generators and have made cooling them impossible. It sounds weird and almost illogical that a power plant could be flooded out of power but that's what's happened.

BREAKING NEWS FROM JAPAN TV:

Japan quake magnitude raised to 9.0

Japan's Meteorological Agency says the magnitude of Friday's earthquake that hit the Pacific coast of northeastern Japan was 9.0 instead of 8.8 as earlier announced.

The agency made the correction on Sunday morning after analyzing seismic waves and other data. The magnitude is equivalent to that of the 2004 earthquake off Sumatra, Indonesia, which triggered massive tsunamis in the Indian Ocean.

The agency says the focal zone of Friday's quake was about 500-kilometers long and 200-kilometers wide. Destructive movement along the fault continued for more than 5 minutes.

The Meteorological Agency says only 4 other quakes in the world have recorded magnitudes of 9 or over.

It is amazing what earthquakes can do.  News reports say the island of Japan moved 8 feet, or 2.4 meters, east.  It also affected the Earth's axis.  The nuclear issue is scary.  That video of the explosion from Saturday was amazing.  They say that was due to a build up of hydrogen.  Experts are saying if the core container was breached, it would have been devasting.  They are now pumping in sea water in an effort to cool the reactor.

Yep, I'm fully aware that it was the tsunamis that caused the problem. However, tsunamis and earthquakes go hand in hand - earthquakes are what create tsunamis. I still can't shake the idea that it's a bit crazy for Japan to have nuclear power. It just makes no sense to me.

the  sunday paper " Dallas Morning News "   had a great very explicit graphic  showing the steps  as it went from quake to flood  to overheat to "explosion"  and sea water cooling
( actual explosion was hydrogen gas created  from overheating of the fuel rods)
with explanations of each step/ occurrence...    the specific cause of overheat was the flood that killed the Backup generators  which shut down the pumps  then the battery  backups  weren't enough to run all the pumps....... a real classic case of waterfall  disaster scenario.
(  how many backups  do you put in place?)

There is a sense of irony in the fact that the United States dropped two hydrogen bombs on Japan to end the second world war and now Japan faces a "nuclear disaster" because of this quake/tsunami. Didn't they learn from the horrors of WWII? I can only pray that they come through this, it's hard to fathom that I am watching, probably, the greatest natural disaster of my lifetime.

Well, its clean if theres no leaks!

Australia has enough desert to put a few reactors in the middle of, and we're geologically stable (unlike japan)... admittedly, cooling a reactor in the desert might suck a bit though, lol

BREAKING NEWS---

There has been a new blast at the nuclear plant.  Officials are saying there has been some damage to containment structure.  They are saying half of the control rods were exposed at No. 2 Reactor and that radiation levels increased to levels that can impact human health.  They are saying anyone within 30 kilometers (19 miles) to stay indoors and there is a very high risk of further release of radioactive material.  They are pulling back employees and telling the media to stay away.  Something more serious has obviously happened than happened before.

If the winds blow to the south, then Tokyo will be affected.  This does not sound good.

My heart does go out for all those people who are living in Japan.  Especially the ones who pretty much lost everything they own and now have to deal with a radically different world to live in.  The whole radiation thing scares the shit out of me.  There is a nuclear plan less than 30 miles away from where I live today and just in the last year alone there have been two shutdowns due to minor safety issues.  That makes me a little nervous to say the least.

Nobody knows what the outcome will be from the damaged power plants in Japan.  Folks on the west coast of the USA are stocking up on iodine tablets in case radiation heads this way.  Officials try to downplay this but the public should still be prepared for the worst.

Just a point of clarification.

Iodine tablets (like the kind used for water purification), aren't the right stuff.  It has to be Potassium Iodide, which from what I can find, is a strictly controlled substance.

Like Hope and everyone else, I can't even fathom the enormity of what the people in Japan have/are experiencing.
The earthquake led to the tsunami, the tsunami led to the nuclear disaster, this series of events is something I can't even get my mind around.

The media, not content with a horrible natural disaster, has to make a bigger story about a fucking partial meltdown, whatever that actually entails.  10,000 plus may have perished and everytime I turn on the news they're on about whether there's a fire in reactor no 2 or whether explosion no 3 partially exposed the core in reactor no 4; the main impact of this reporting seems to be turning everyone on the planet into armchair nuclear scientists.

ABC News gives a reality check on radiation.  According to them--Each year, all of us are exposed to about 3.5 Millisieverts (whatever that means) of radiation.  That is about 67 chest x-rays or 134 cross-country plane trips.  In order to get radiation sickness, you need to be exposed to 1,000 millisieverts at once.  A fatal dose is 5,000 millisieverts.  I was surprised we are exposed to the equivalant of 67 chest x-rays, because everyone acts like it is a big deal to have more than a couple per year.  I had a few when sick and everyone acted like I was going to get lung cancer.  Granite has been another hot topic lately with some saying it can cause illness--especially certain types of granite.  After hearing all that, I began wondering if we should have gone with laminate instead.  When the reporter puts the Geiger Counter up to a granite statue, it went off big-time.  But, he said it was perfectly safe.

9.0 EARTHQUAKE DEVASTATES JAPAN...FIFTH LARGEST SINCE 1900...STRONGEST EVER TO STRIKE JAPAN

The jokes about Japan are not funny when people are still trying to find their loved ones. Poor taste is one thing but trashiness is another. On a side-note, Japan suffered another 3 earthquakes yesterday at 6.0 or above on the Richter scale and as of this posting, 12:41AM CDT, have had another one at 6.0. Yesterday and today they have had 52 aftershocks and earthquakes. The situation there is grave to say the least.

I spent some time in Japan while I was in the Air Force and they are a marvelous people and show incredible strength at times like this but they are hurting really bad. There is good reason to be concerned about the nuke plants. The Japanese HATE having to ask anyone for anything so the fact that they have asked for help with their reactors is beyond significant.

Can only hope that the best and brightest of their scientists can defuse the situation with their reactors, so they can start to rebuild the soooo many shattered lives

sadly, i think that death toll is going to go up quite a bit :-(

They have an indomitable spirit. They are very honor bound as well, evidenced in the lack of looting and the patient waiting in lines for food, water. They also revere their elderly, I heard that food rations were going first to the elderly and children and then if there was any left it would go to the others. I can guarantee you things would be totally different if this would have occured in the US (and not in a good way).

Quite a nice people, and an amazingly beautiful country. My heart continues to go out to them.\

Japan earthquake: Britons told to consider Tokyo exit

The Foreign Office has advised Britons to consider leaving Tokyo and north-east Japan following Friday's quake, tsunami and subsequent radiation fears.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-12765593 (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-12765593)

MOSCOW, March 16 (Itar-Tass) -- Russia is evacuating the families of its employees in Japan, the Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday, March 16.

“Due to the current situation in Japan, the decision has been made for the families of employees of Russian institutions in Japan, including the Embassy in Tokyo, the consulates general and the trade mission, to leave the country temporarily, tentatively on March 18,” the ministry said.

“No evacuation of the employees of our diplomatic missions, and employees of other Russian governmental institutions in Japan is being considered at the moment,” the ministry said.

He she may have had no choice. May have been trapped there and just took the highest most stable building as refuge. Since we have the video we can assume he she survived, thank god. How terrifying.
