Condom broke with a prostitute
« on: August 25, 2006, 09:28:53 am »
I had vaginal sex earlier today with a prostitute and the condom broke. She started out by putting a condom on me and preforming 10 minutes or so of protected oral sex, and then a few different sex positions. During the changing of our positions I checked to make sure the condom was in tact - it was. The last position was from behind/doggy style and after I ejaculated, I withdrew only to find that the condom had broken and the head of my penis was totally exposed.

I don't know how long I was exposed. She was very loose and I didn't feel much, so I had no idea that it broke. The exposure time could be between 5 seconds and 4 or 5 minutes I suppose.

The prostitute was very unhappy about this, and was concerned about the money she was going to have to spend on some morning after pills and HIV tests. I tried to find out from her the last time she was tested, but communication was a problem - this happened in Poland.

Is testing advised in this situation? Should I have one done now (I've never been tested) and then another in 6 weeks?

I'm a little freaked ou. Thanks for any information/advice.

Nad,

Ok you've had a risk and you need to test for HIV at 12-13 weeks from the date of this incident. Also you should be screened for other STD's too.

The good news is that HIV is a difficult virus to transmit, particularly from female to male, so the chances that you've contracted HIV from this incident are very low. But very low risk is not the same as no risk. HIV is nothing to guess about so get tested.

Whilst you're here with us at the lovely Club AIDSMEDS, I'd encourage you to read our glossy, full colour Welcome Thread.

Regards,

MtD

nad,

There's not a lot of point in testing now and the earliest you should test is six weeks. The vast majority of people who have actually been infected will seroconvert and test positive by then, but a negative result at six weeks MUST be confirmed at 12-13 weeks.

You'd also be wasting time and money testing for the other STIs at this point. You should wait 10-14 days, unless you develop any unusual discharge in the meantime.

As Matty mentioned, the odds are in your favour but you have had a risk and you do need to test. Do yourself a favour and don't start symptom hunting because the body has a way of obliging your mind with symptoms that you read and worry about. Symptoms or the lack of symptoms means nothing when it comes to hiv infection - only the appropriate test at the appropriate time will reliably inform you of your hiv status.

You say you've never tested before, but anyone who is sexually active should be having a complete sexual health care check up at least once a year and more often if unprotected intercourse takes place. Let your upcoming screenings be the start of a lifelong habit.

You also need to be using condoms all the time, not just with sex workers. You need to be using condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, every time, no exceptions until such time as you are in a securely monogamous relationship where you have both tested for ALL STIs together. To agree to have unprotected intercourse is to consent to the possibility of being infected with a sexually transmitted infection.

Have a look through the condom and lube links in my signature line so you can use condoms with confidence. A correctly used condom rarely breaks. Please have a good read so you can avoid this happening to you again.

Thank you both for your prompt replies.

I suppose I'll wait 6 weeks and have the HIV test done and then another 6 weeks after that.

Did the fact that I ejaculated inside her increase my chances of contracting something? I read in other threads about people feeling the condom break and immediately pulling out - this wasn't the case for me.

nad,

Whether or not you ejaculated is only a concern for the person you ejaculated into. It makes no difference to you where hiv risk is concerned.

If this is the only unprotected intercourse you've ever had with a person of unknown hiv status, I'm fully expecting you to test negative. Hiv is a fragile, difficult to transmit virus and more so from a woman to a man, but you do need to test to be certain. Don't guess or assume, test.

Hello,

It's now been 10 days since my possible exposure. After posting on here last week and getting some helpful feedback, I was able to more or less put the issue out of my mind and go on about my business normally. I looked through the forum and saw plenty of posts from people freaking out over every little symptom, even refusing to believe a negative result. I decided I wasn't going to obsess over something which was already (possibly) done, and would simply wait for 6 weeks to do my first test.

The only problem is that Thursday evening (6 days after my possible exposure) I came home from work and was so completely exhausted that I fell asleep on my couch just minutes after walking in through the door. The next morning I could barely get out of bed - it took me about 1 hour to make breakfast. I kept sitting down and had to rest my head on the table for awhile. I somehow made it through work Friday, but the same thing happened when I got home. I had to sleep for awhile, then got up had some food and went back to bed. I hardly left my apartment this weekend - I was simply too weak. Every time I got out of bed I ended up getting so fatigued so quickly that I would have to climb back into it and sleep for 20 or 30 minutes before having the energy to continue.

I've never felt fatigue like this before in my life. I feel a light buzzy tingly sensation in my limbs. From what I've read these sort of symptoms don't normally begin for a couple of weeks after infection, but I have read that they can begin a matter of days after infection for some people.

I know what everyone is going to say. Symptoms mean nothing when it comes to HIV. Only the proper test at the proper time, etc etc etc.. that doesn't change the fact that I'm bloody scared right now. I'm in reasonably good health and have never had symptoms like these ever before in my life. I need to leave for work soon and I have no idea how I'm going to make it through the day without napping on my desk a few times today.

Can someone please tell me that I'm overreacting and that it's impossible to present ARS/seroconversion symptoms this early? I find myself going back to the incident with the prostitute over and over again. She was bloody angry that the condom broke which I hope is a good sign, but as I stated earlier I don't know when she was tested last.

scared,
N.A.D.

You right, you're going to see it again. Symptoms or the lack of symptoms is in no way a way to diagnosis HIV. Testing at the correct time is the ONLY way you'll know your status. If you are having problems seek the help of your doctor. It can't be done on the Internet.

nad,

Hiv is the least likely explanation for your symptoms. Even healthy people come down with colds, flus and viruses - and hiv is only one of thousands of viruses that a person may be exposed to in the course of interaction with other people. Depression and anxiety can also cause every single thing you are experiencing. If your fatigue problems persist, see your doctor.

Let me remind you that hiv is a fragile, difficult to transmit virus and more so from a woman to a man. My own partner were together for a year and a half, not using condoms, before we discovered my positive hiv status. He's still hiv negative over seven years later - and yes, we do use condoms now. They are very effective when it comes to hiv prevention. Your brief (possible) exposure is not at all likely to result in infection.

Exercise very often has a positive effect on fatigue - even though it might not seem logical. Get out and get some fresh air and exercise - chances are good it will help.

4 weeks today since it happened. I've now got 2 flat fleshy red sores on the area of my penis which was exposed.  A couple of days ago when I ejaculated it came out looking like cottage cheese. Looks like I got herpes and gonorrhea, and I dearly hope those are the least of my problems.

As a side note to add to my mental torture, the prostitute has removed herself from the online listings where I found her. Makes me wonder why.

Nad,

If you are having problems with your penis, why are you posting on the internet instead of seeing a doctor about them?

It is highly unlikely, but not altogether impossible, that you have become infected with hiv. Gonorrhea, herpes and all the other sexually transmitted infections are another story, as they are ALL much more easily transmitted than hiv.

Go see your doctor about your penis NOW, and have an hiv test done at the appropriate time.

Ann,

What makes you assume I haven't already begun this process? It takes 5-10 working days to get in to see a dr under my national health system.

I mainly posted it because I know that HIV+ people also infected with gonorrhea are much more infectious, which gives me cause for concern.
