Welcome to the "Do I Have HIV?" POZ forum.

This special section of the POZ forum is for individuals who have concerns about whether or not they are HIV positive. Individuals are permitted to post up to three questions or responses in this forum.

Ongoing participation in the "Do I Have HIV?" forum (posting more than three questions or responses) requires a paid subscription, with secure payments made via PayPal.

A seven-day subscription is $9.99, a 30-day subscription is $14.99 and a 90-day subscription is $24.99.

Anyone who needs to post more than three messages in the "Do I Have HIV?" forum -- including past, present and future POZ Forums members -- will need to subscribe, with secure payments made via PayPal.

Q: Post exposure prophylaxis (PEP)

Hi everyone, I'm very new to this so please bear with me. As yet I've not had a positive test, but I have had a possible exposure to the the virus.

I've acted quickly and my doctor prescribed post exposure prophylaxis medication, which I've been taking for 48 hours.

The meds I've been to combat the infection are...

1. Emtricitabine (200mg) & Tenofovir (245mg) (Truvada) combined
2. Kaletra tablets (no stated mg)

And to combat nausea and diarrhoea...

1. Metroclopramide (10mg)
2. Loperamide (2mg)

So far I'm feeling ok, stomach's a bit dicky but that's it but my question is about the side effects, has anyone on this forum had experience of these medications? Obviously I'm going to take them, I have a 28 day course and hopefully I'll be clear, I can take an unexpected 28 days, but there are so many 'common' side effects listed, I know the meds must need to be really heavy duty to stop hiv taking a hold, but I'm terrified of what's going to come, could anyone give me an idea what to expect?

And of course, does PEP actually work to stop the initial infection taking hold?

As someone who has not been diagnosed with hiv, you should NOT be posting in any forum other than here in the Am I Infected forum. Therefore, I removed your thread from the Treatment forum and placed it where it belongs. Make sure you read the posting guidelines found in our Welcome Thread. Thank you for your cooperation.



What was your "possible exposure"? You may be worrying over nothing and you wouldn't be the first person to be prescribed PEP needlessly.

If you did have an actual risk, your chances are very good of coming out of this ok due to taking PEP.

The main side-effect you'll probably have to worry about is the nausea and diarrhea that can accompany Kaletra. Use the meds the doc gave you for these side effects and you should be fine. It's only for 28 days.

Truvada is pretty well tolerated with most people, not many side effects usually. Kaletra can sometimes cause GI problems (diarrhea, upset stomach, especially when someone is first taking it).

With PEP it's the sooner the better so within 48 hours is still good. There are too many variables to consider as far as knowing if it will work or not but this is a good solid potent cocktail so at least you don't have to worry about that.

Just bite the bullet, in the big scheme of things it's not that big of a deal if you were to get some diarrhea or nausea or whatever (and maybe you won't, not everyone does).  Consider yourself fortunate to have caught this early and to have access to PEP.
