Used Olive Oil with condom and broke; what are the risk ??
« on: April 26, 2013, 11:17:05 am »
Recently, I encountered sex with a broken condom.

I had sex with an escort girl (white, between 20-25). I did oral (unprotected on her). Then she put a condom and protected oral sex. Then vaginal sex for about 5 mins. Then she grabbed her oil (olive oil) and use it. Within a minute or so, condom broke. I was checking from time to time that condition of the condom during that time. I was not sure if I penetrated with the broken condom. Even if I did, it was like less than 10 seconds.
After the first condom broke, she put the second condom and put the oil. I ejaculated within the condom and checked that it was not broke.
I learned that the oil can quickly weaken the latex condom (which we used). I found articles on the internet that the oil can weaken the barrier. Also, I found a thread on this site saying it is not true. Latex condom are either broke or not. It does not make holes or leak. Is that true.

What are my risks of attracting HIV? I am uncircumcised.

Because I got like a sore throat the next day after the exposure. And some coughing. Then followed by a oral mucus and nasal discharge. Doc gave me a promethazine. I took for a week and stopped because it gave me more anxiety. I had some chill in the evening on some day ( and then went away). Rapid test on the 5day exposure( negative but useless because it was too early). Then I had stomach cramps. Doc gave me cipro (for 5 days). I was not able to sleep very well and my body is ached. No fever (but I can feel my body is a little warm in the evening than in the morning or day).  I have some light night sweat on the neck and face. No rash. But the dry cough has been almost 2 weeks (since the next day after the exposure). I already got the early test (took the blood on the 10 days of exposure) and will get the result in 2 weeks from the testing date. I think the symptoms I am having is not due to the HIV as it will be too early. But I just want to understand my risks.

Hi Worried , The risk for the insertive partner is significantly lower than it is for the receptive partner. And we are talking about a single incident of relatively short duration. All of those are factors which make for relatively low risk for you.

BUT lower risk is not the same as no risk . It would be unlikely for you to test positive over this incident , as a matter of fact I have never seen a person turn up positive over a broken condom .

Since you did have a low risk incident you can test 6 weeks past the possible exposure and again at 3 months to confirm the result . I would expect a negative result .

Condoms are designed to fail catastrophically , meaning they do not get tiny leaks you cant see . You should only use lube that is approved for latex condoms and NEVER an oil based lube . You can check out the links at the bottom of my page to find more information on condoms and lube .

As for you low risk condom break incident , anyone who is sexually active should be having a full sexual health care checkup, including but not limited to HIV testing, at least once a year and more often if unprotected intercourse occurs.

If you aren't already having regular, routine checkups, now is the time to start. As long as you make sure condoms are being used for intercourse, you can fully expect your routine HIV tests to return with negative results.

Don't forget to always get checked for all the other sexually transmitted infections as well, because they are MUCH easier to transmit than HIV. Some of the other STIs can be present with no obvious symptoms, so the only way to know for sure is to test.

Use condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, correctly and consistently, and you will avoid HIV infection. It really is that simple!

Thanks for the reply. Is that mean that I have only risk during the time when the condom was tore? There is no risk of attracting HIV when the condom was lubed with olive oil but not tear up or broken or fall out?

That is correct the only risk is when you fail to use condoms or they break , this time because the wrong lube was used . The oil itself is only a factor in the condom breaking and not a factor of increasing or decreasing the risk of acquiring HIV during sex .

Can you evaluate the low risk? Is it 1/1000 or 1/100?
I am having anxiety and relating symptoms I have with the ARS. How soon the ARS appear (any at all) and how long the ARS usually last? Can you suggest how to cope anxiety? Appreciate it.

Nope, we can't. Statistics are pretty much useless when dealing with situations as unique as sexual acts. Not only are many of the studies that assign statistics fatally flawed, but they are meant to apply to the macro, not the micro. Meaning, they are only of general use for researchers tracking large populations. They were never meant to apply to individual situations. It's like asking "how long is a piece of string?"

The specifics of your own physiology, that of your partner, the type of sex, the length of the act, the comparative gentleness/roughness (which is by itself a subjective determination,) the presence of HIV and viral load on the partner, the presence of any other STDs in the partner, ovulation, inflammation, and probably a hundred other factors weigh in.

Not only can I give you no firm answers/numbers, but those numbers, even if you would answer ALL the questions above, would be different the very next time you had sex.

What I CAN say is that in ten years I have been doing risk assessment on this forum, I have never seen an insertive partner test positive over a condom break.

Your risk was low enough so that I have every confidence you will come out OK, but you do need to test. If you find your anxiety is getting the better of you, perhaps your physician can prescribe anti-anxiety medication. Or you could consider seeing a counselor to discuss your feelings regarding this event.

In the meantime, keep busy and, assuming all comes out well, please take this as an education regarding proper condom and lube useage. After all, SOMETHING good should come out of all this, right?

"Many people, especially in the gay community, turn to oral sex as a safer alternative in the age of AIDS. And with HIV rates rising, people need to remember that oral sex is safer sex. It's a reasonable alternative."
