Reported in The Kansas City Pitch:

The cheerleaders split up into two groups that line up on either side of the basket. Matthew Pope — the tallest member of the squad as well as the only guy — takes a spot in the back row. The 17-year-old, who choreographs all the routines, is one of the three co-captains of the squad.

There's another thing that makes Matthew stand out. He's openly gay. At Shawnee Mission East, a school that's often stereotyped as conservative and snobby.

Being an Australian, I'm not sure what a homecoming king is but it sounds like a curious combination of the wholesome and the perverse. Be sure to check out the 19 picture slide show of Matthew mincing around with his hags on the squad.

Nice looking kid, though to me, he sort of looks like a young version of a wolf-man.

Damned One, since I was kicked out of high school, and when I attended I never went to any sporting events, I can't rightly explain the whole homecoming king thing.  The only thing I can come up with is like the most popular and best-dressed boy.  Someone else perhaps could better explain it.

I ran for Homecoming Queen in an L.A. Bar once and finished last.  I did win the "Bitch" Category though.   Now, the only Homecoming, I would be elected for is the Old Folks Home  ;D  Have the best day

My highschool didn't have any sports, so no homecoming, no pep rallies, no nothing. My prom didn't have a king and queen either. I led a very depraved (or is that deprived?) childhood.

Mum (who sends all of her billing to Shawnee Mission, KS, but lives in WV.  Not the most efficient way of doing business.)

I suppose I could take a jab at explaining the Homecoming King/Queen concept...

Once each year there is a Homecoming game.  It is marketed to those who have graduated from that school. We had a pep rally with a big bonfire, cheers and a band.

Each grade votes a Homecoming Princess and I think a runner up.  Our school had a parade where all the Princesses and the Queen rode in a parade in convertibles, the high school band, the cheerleaders and the song girls are also in the parade.

Of the Senior class, one of the Senior Princesses gets the most votes and becomes the Homecoming Queen.  She gets the biggest tiara and rides in the most expensive convertible.  It has been nearly 40 years since I was in high school so I may have missed a few points but, there is also a Homecoming Dance and as in most high school dances, I was drunk.

Me thinks it was also a big shame if the team lost the Homecoming Game.  ;D  Have the best day

During my senior year of high school, I was an out-of-control prankster, and impersonated/stole the Homecoming King role during the "parade".  As always, there were thousands of locals in the football field bleachers.  I was in our marching band (Sousaphone!), which was huge (and marched in the Rose Bowl Parade once).

I knew our Homecoming Queen really well (she was in the band's color guard), and the King was the Captain of our football team (of course!).  Since he had to stay with his team in the locker room prior to the start of the game, the Queen was going to be riding alone in the big convertible that drove down the middle of the football field.  Before it started, I pulled a great prank, slipping away from the band, and asked the Queen if I could join her in the car -- she was game.  I put on the crown, and we both waved to the crowd while the band members went nuts once they noticed I was hijacking the event.  I got really chewed out by the principal for that one.

My senior year was filled with moments like this that prepared me well for the ACT UP years.  LOL.
