AIRCRAFT ACCIDENT IN MADRID TODAY
« on: August 20, 2008, 06:48:45 pm »
Today an accident happened at Madrid Barajas Airport. The plane was an MD-82 from SPANAIR, a company that had never had an accident before owned by Scandivanian Air System (SAS).
As you might know I belong to an Air Cabin Crew Union www.stavla.com. We have 5 representatives at Spanair. They were at meeting at Spanair headquartes in Palma de Mallorca when the accident took place. At the beggining the news were confusing. The captain had been killed. He was 43 years old and had 3 little daugthers. Then we knew that the brunnete F/A sitting at the rear appeared dead on the ground. With that descrioption we knew who she was. Finally the tragedy reached a new dimension. The entire crew had been killed (5) members. The copilot was a young mother of 3 children. There were other 4 crew memebers flying as passengers to position them at Gran Canaria Airport. They were also killed.
In total 157 people killed (more tha a dozen children between 2 and 12 years of age) and 19 people severely injured.
The flight had been delayed due to a problem. During take off one of the engines exploded and teared the tail appart. The plane fell on the ground in a ball of fire.
The meeting at Spanair headquarters was to discuss the loss of 1.200 employments. 105 were going to be fires and 250 F/A. The fleet of MD was going to stop operatin the 15th of september. A pilot friend of mine says the maintanance of that fleet had been non existant for the last 2 months.
Here is a video of the tragedy.

Its heartbreaking, and scary.

I googled spanair yesterday and that was before the big headlines and when it just happened and I got some small economic headline that spanair pilots were threatening strike that very day, b/c SAS the owner were cutting so much budget from spanair that was losing them money, and ibreria and others didnt want to buy it.

Dunno if there's any relation but that will take weeks if not years to uncover (or cover)

I'm sorry to hear of this tragedy.  As much as I love flying, I do get butterflies in my stomach flying just after a major accident.  I hope their ordeal didn't last too long (my biggest fear).

Take care of yourself mister.

It is so heartbreaking and so sad to hear stories like this one, especially as an airline employee.

My heart just sink every time. Especially from an airline partner of our Star Alliance.

There is so much struggles financially for the so called legacy carriers, one can only wonder how the smaller one are going by to their daily operations.

Hopefully with out speculations, we will find out what the causes are of this dreadful accident, so that it does not happen again.

RIP to everyone on board and to their family alike.

 :(
