I think it's for the best, personally.  Not working right now, but when I am I don't like to have any outside friends, lovers or family there.  I prefer it to be my space and my thing totally.  I don't mind making friendships from work, but they generally remain in the "office friends" catagory

I like to leave the work away from home and the home away from work.  It helps to make each one an oasis from the other, if needed.

I agree.  For me, ideally work friends are work friends.  For instance I would not want work friends to be my friends on facebook and such.  My last boss wanted to befriend me on facebook.  I thought he was kidding.  I am a private person like that though.  Now this last situation with the interview was unexpected.  But we both acted appropriately and I think we would have had they offered and I accepted the job.  There was no emotion involved of course.  But again a fun story to tell in the future to friends.

It all depends on the personalities involved and the work setting.
I think co-workers can become friends.
And I also think co-workers can fall in love. Happens all the time.
