Welcome to the "Do I Have HIV?" POZ forum.

This special section of the POZ forum is for individuals who have concerns about whether or not they are HIV positive. Individuals are permitted to post up to three questions or responses in this forum.

Ongoing participation in the "Do I Have HIV?" forum (posting more than three questions or responses) requires a paid subscription, with secure payments made via PayPal.

Oral w/swallowing - Bleeding Gums / Definition of an "Unhealthy Mouth"

Within the last couple weeks I have performed unprotected oral with 5 different guys where the guy came in my mouth on three of those occasions.  I do have instances of early gingivitis, and frequently have bleeding gums when I brush my teeth or floss.  This is a relatively new behavior for me, as in the past I have had a boyfriend and always gotten tested together before we did much sexually.

I'm wondering more about the possibility of acquiring HIV through what is considered to be an "unhealthy mouth" in more of a general sense.

I've heard on and on (on this site specifically) that there is no possible way of transmission via oral sex---- period. 

I know there are many other STD's out there (which I get tested for quite regularly) that are much easier transmitted via oral sex, but as far as HIV goes even with my bleeding gums (which could bleed when I suck too), does that mean I should feel confident to suck and swallow away without fear?

I have to question (although I'm not saying I'm anywhere near that point oral health-wise) --at some extreme point someone performing oral sex with horrible teeth and gums there would HAVE to be a risk beyond a certain point, right?. How is an "unhealthy mouth" defined? Keep in mind that I guess I'm envisioning something like Meth Mouth, a mouth where you have lost most of your teeth, or massive amounts of blood flowing out of the mouth at the time of the incident.   

I am again in no way comparing my oral health to this.  I guess I'm just having a problem understanding the difference between bleeding gums (which lead to the bloodstream) that could have been exposed to cum  vs. a huge gaping wound exposed to cum (which also lead to the bloodstream)  Don't they both go to the same place?

I'd never say it's impossible to become infected through giving oral, but the elements would so have to align that it is extremely improbable. As in openly bleeding great pits in the mouth or fresh oral surgery (hardly the circumstances for giving oral of course) and the like.

And not at all what you are describing.

Your saliva has over a dozen elements and proteins which very effectively prevent the transmission of viable.

There's no need for testing nor further concern on your part.

The only confirmed risks for the sexual transmission of HIV are unprotected anal (and vaginal) intercourse.
