The Coroner in the Wizard of Oz died...

http://www.baynews9.com/content/36/2010/4/10/605828.html?title=%27Wizard+of+Oz%27+munchkin+actor+dies+at+94+in+Florida

ORANGE PARK, FLA. (AP) -- Meinhardt Raabe, who played the munchkin coroner in "The Wizard of Oz," has died.

His caregiver, Cindy Bosnyak, said Raabe died Friday morning at a hospital in Orange Park, Fla. He was 94 and was one of the few surviving munchkins from the 1939 film.

Bosnyak said he complained of a sore throat at his retirement community before collapsing.

Raabe was a veteran "midget" performer, as little people were then known, when the film was made. He was the official who pronounces the wicked witch "really most sincerely dead."

In a 1988 Associated Press interview, he said he had no idea the movie would become a classic, because at the time of its release, it was overshadowed by "Gone With the Wind."

The Coroner in the Wizard of Oz died...
...

Although I haven't seen the movie since (well before the end of) the last millennium & am not a great fan his small part is one I remember fondly.  I can't remember his lines verbatim but think they ended "She is most completely dead..." or similar.   I always had somewhat morbid interests as a child so the singing munchkin coroner (and the E/W witches, of course, but not that bubble-witch of the North) naturally made an impression.

" As coroner, I must aver, I've thoroughly examined her.
And is not just merely dead, she's really most sincerely dead!"

(Now putting away my ruby slippers)

For the longest time I didn't know what the second line was (I must aver.) I actually saw the line on story about his death. Anyone know if any Munchkins are still around?

RIP, Coroner of Munchkinland.

I now have the movie on Blu-Ray....I am seeing details I have never seen before, it is fabulous.
Also, you can turn on a feature that shows the words to all the songs, so you can clearly understand what the munchkins and winkies and others are saying....

Yes, some of the other munchkins are still alive and making appearances.
