Skyline..

Not the least bit fancy, but close to the touristy things.  Clean 'enough' and not expensive, book online.

Sae.
Meh.

Check out the Edison.
Nothing fancy about it, but it's affordable, and in midtown (close to everything).
In NYC, all I look for is cheap, clean, and no "shared bath."
Last time I stayed at the Edison it was all of these things, and under $100 per night.

(I'm going to have to shake off the oogies from that Dateline special on the resurgence of bed bugs in NYC hotels before I'll be able to ever go back...)

I have had luck on priceline but it can be hit or miss.

NYC was packed two weeks ago and all hotels were over 200.  But I have paid less than 125 on priceline.

Go to tripadvisor.com and do a search for NYC hotels.  They usually list hotels (ranked by popularity) with their prices.

Try the Best Western on 38th and 10th.  It's close to the convention center, which means it isn't close to most major attractions (Time Square is probably about 6-7 blocks away).  Trip Advisor shows prices around $250 a night, which I think is reasonable (for NYC-Manhattan).
