Hospital ward notes
« on: July 23, 2014, 09:54:39 am »
First time on a non HIV ward at the Chelsea & Westminster . The ward covers all things digestive ,broken bones & very ill people who have. God knows what . Single rooms one side bays off six the other although the ward is both sexes the bays are male , female.

Pain distorts everything and the first six days where aw fall.I could not get the bone setters to contact my pain control Docs,so fed

ever increasing doses off morphine until one Doc noticed I had had enough to floor an elephant and finally contacted pain team

Two hours after a dose off Pregabelin or something that sounds like that and I was fine. More on this later.

Fast forward to now I propel myself around in a padded seat wheel chair with my good foot often offered help which 99% off the time I say thanks but I am fine.

In fact I am cutting quite a dash as I gain confidence and enjoyed a coffee in the Sun this morning.

Decided to be out about HIV buy just saying it when it fitted , range off non verbal reactions from ward fellows but my ward bf after getting his mouth to close , being rather quite for the rest off the day and I suspect some discussion with lovely family in Portuguese has been fine and I suspect rather proud at how modern he is being.

As for those who have blanked me, fuck em. Clarity is going so ta ta for now more later ,afraid or sad to say..

Anna a lovely nurse just bought round ice for all.

We all had to listen to a gentleman being told there's no hope he is 88 and bore the news with great dignity. Hospital curtains are crap as sound insulation.

Have no worries Zack when it's needed I can be atomic

It's a rare quite period drama queen next door has gone out to smoke whatever the brat has scored today if he makes as much fuss tonight as last night it's the old bailey for me.

They are saying one more week till I can go home so I guess I will be sleeping in my own bed in 10to14 days days from now.

hospital radio just asked for requests I gave Iggy,s Lust for life

So nice to see you back ZenM! My head has been lost in the clouds of late and I didn't catch this thread until now.

I see you have retained your sense of humor. lol.

I'll bet Miss Mia Sophia can't wait for your arrival even though she has most likely been spoiled these past few weeks.

Greg, I am not a censoring kind of man so yes you use anything that takes your fancy.

Zack it's not a hellhole in many ways it's very beautiful , the food is at best good canteen food with fresh fruit , basic sandwiches , fruit juice , good soups , halal, kosher, ,West Indian alternatives. It tries. On occasion it all goes wrong but that is due to the serving and length off time from cooking to eating then it can be awful.

It is stretched , minimum wage serving workers doing long hours , lots off new to Britain workers some happier with there situation than others. There are problems ,how could there not be some off the cleaning serving staff are learning English on the job ,but that reflects the patients also .I have witnessed cleaning staff subbing as interpreters with patients. It clearly has the trust off the various Muslin communities and earns money through the private part and non Brit patients receiving the services.

I cannot wait to leave.

Later news about my new consultant , deliberate ignorance by me and how to frighten physical therapists.

Added.   I do take coffee and sunshine by commandeering Patient wheel chairs which I mostly propel backwards with my un cast foot .

I get three meals a day tea coffee on reasonable requests depending how busy nurses are tea coffee cart comes 3 times a day.three food supplement shakes a day cake in the afternoon fresh fruit and sandwiches on request. free. And yes sometimes I complain about the standard too. There is no wine list.

Sadly when I go out the Starbucks I bloody well have to pay don,t they know this is a socialist medical country .
The nerve.
,
When in an hours time I hobble rattle and roll in a unsuitable wheel chair or walking frame into Carluggios,s with miss Chrissy and hubby spend 2to3hours sampling Italian yum yummies again yes I will have to pay and yes again the nerve. tomorrow my Big Brother takes me out to lunch I might let him treat me , we will see, So Jeff dear you now have some idea as to the dreadful privations I have to suffer in this stinking hotbed off socialist infiltration .

Forgot to add fresh bread roll and real butter or that awful spread stuff depending on taste and two side salads with vinaigrette to the free stuff.

I rather like a cafeteria meal now and then ... Saint Vincents hospital in downtown Bham is very busy for breakfast lunch and dinner and the food is awesome ... its owned and prepared by capitalist pigs so naturally its excellent .

saw you going on and on about "Pregabelin" making you high in another thread -- seriously darling? That's just Lyrica here in the US. Did nothing for me except make my cock unfunctionable during masturbation.

Anyway, glad to see you are progressing slowly but so sorry this happened to you.

At least you're allowed to smoke.  It's strictly forbidden on the entire grounds of our hospital.  On one of my broken bones hospital stays, I managed to get down to the ground level and sneaked outside for a refreshing smoke.  Little did I know the doors had already been locked for the evening.  I had to hobble clear around to the main entrance and explain myself.  I was watched pretty closely after that.

So glad this horrible journey is about over ZenM.  :)

Starbucks!  Well, it IS an advanced civilization!!  I don't know why but for whatever reason I thought that Starbucks was a particularly 'stateside' endeavor. I never even thought of it being in other countries.  Of course, when there is one on every street corner and, in every grocery store around here it shouldn't surprise me.

Theyer,

I'm so glad to hear how upbeat you are.Hang on in there, you will soon be home.
How are you coping with the heat?It hit 29 c here yesterday...but I know London has been scorching for days.

I love how your friends come and take you out.I can almost imagine them smuggling in a carry out for you!!!!Just food though for now.

You always cope well with whatever life throws at you.Always..with great humour.
OMG...did you see the Opening Ceremony  for the Commonwealth games on TV, while you have been in hospital?!!!!I think that I hid behind a cushion for the first 15 mins.......lol!!!!!Thought that you might have liked the wee Scottie dogs leading out the countries and flags......especially the ones that refused to walk!!!!

Take care and hope you are home soon.

Well the high has settled down though there was a couple off days when I was happy indeed . I still Marvel at its pain reducing effect .

Not just on the shattered foot but on the PN as well and the Toxic bone feeling .So as a Pain killer added to the fentalin patches and the Venlefaxine it works better than anything I have had before. Maybe the high was the relief off not having the pain off the foot. Who knows..

As I have said I have been referred to the neurological team had two verbal and sensory tests with the consultants juniors one meeting with the Man himself . There are many tests to come some have to wait until my cast comes off. However I have notice that the visiting HIV Docs are already referring to my Autonomic neuropathy which was suspected in 2004 after the last chemo ,now being talked about as certain. Read up on AN the comforting content under outcomes is Death due to sudden Heart failure. Which after three weeks on a ward dealing with awful awfal stomach digestive issues as well as bones requiring surgery (me) is weirdly comforting.

Today included a four hour lunch with MissChrissy and Mr J which flew by

I am more than ready to leave and as soon as the furniture in the flat has been moved around and the safety plans for the bathroom are at least set in motion then I am away .Social Worker saying Thursday but I have been here before And will be gob smacked if the deadline is met without a delaying cock up.

If the Pregabelin continues to have this pain control effect I will have a tee shirt proclaiming it.
However all yes all 16 drugs I am on are up for review so who knows what the coming months will bring.

Need to get out more.  Dano my friend.

Are the Commonwealth games on ? And my brother is still visiting me tomorrow ,please nobody tell me it's a rest day tomorrow for then let a one functioning legged man keep his realities.

Brit if you had seen me "requesting"that the bone folk speak to the pain folk on day 5calm would never come to mind more like a very very put out fury at the very end off his tether, time needs to pass before the whole story can be told due to the sensitivities off others.

Well I am on the last lap , dealing with SW and OT to get out off here.

It's time

One off the reasons is this Hospital life is getting too comfortable ,  company , off to the coffee shop on the street outside when I want too , a ciggie when I want it mostly( no lectures I always start smoking when admitted to Hospital how does one meet the rebels other wise) meals made bought to me , restaurant eating when family and friends visit , drugs counted out , now with my mini iPad I am in reach off all NO. I must get out ASAP.

Michael, so, almost out?  I know you're looking forward to it, seeing your doggy again.  No lectures here about smoking, I smoke also, even while not in the hospital lol.  Difficult habit to break, the most difficult I believe.

I'm wishing you the speediest recovery, and much love from across the ocean. :-*

Time  to end the thread now I have been home for 3 days.

Leaving on Friday was typical UK  NHS , full of extremes . The decision to discharge had been around but now I realise in retrospect all medical staff where waiting the return off Bone God , who judging by his tan had good Sun on holiday and knows how to moisterise .

So he arrives after 2weeks away with 2 baby bone Docs and a very Senior nurse at 8.30 am. He is charming 60 + who holds his authority with the ease off someone who would have to think awhile to remember the last time it was seriously challenged.

Greets me warmly, holds out his hand for the baby doc to pass my file and all of us fall silent as he is READS it.  I want to know where he got that tan.

He asks a few ? off his entourage then asks me how I am.

While I reply he is examining my toes and cast. My reply is up beat and I add that although I,d off wished for a different script the event has bought an end to a very  differcult 18months, I am relieved The HIV team referred me to the Neurology team , there plan to investigate how much damage the Autonomic Neauropy has done and then prescribe interventions I agree with. As this is not directly about Bones he is managing inpatient iritation so when I pause he jumps straight in and sais I can leave today and what's more use the leg to weight bare , using pain as my guide and to be cautious at all times.

Senior Nurse suddenly is very attentive adding " well we can start the process off leaving I,d have to check all is in place at home......"

This side off care/ medicine concerns him like Paris Hilton concerns me , he is already turning to leave when the full implications off what he has said hitme.

The last 3.5 weeks have been NO weight baring, physios , OT,s , SW,s home care staff,s work has all been about weight baring on cast is big NO NO.

All I can think off is now I can wear big Velcro rubber soled sandal and have balance hugely increased MUST GET SANDAL NOW NO LEAVE WITHOUT SANDAL.

I say , interrupting his leaving , a calmer version off what I am feeling. Again that manner off Star Treck commander saying "make it so" he tells the nurse to contact all that needs to be contacted, She fights to keep her eyebrows still and makes a noise in the back off her throat meaning I will get on with it ,looks at me sais "it might not be today" I reply I understand and off she goes to catch up the others.I get to a wheel chair head outside to Starbuckles for a ciggie and plan my priorities , telling all I pass the news.

Priorities are ,in order off importance Foot sandal, pee bottle , washing chair . Something around toilet , Months supply of drugs..
Head back to ward and very soon Physio Guy turns up controlling felt pressure as my discharge has without any warning landed on him. So I get a boot thing , have to repeat a number off movement tests , fail crutches. OT arrives agrees with my shopping list and a couple off hours later turns up with chair etc. Then I settle down to wait for the drugs experience has taught me no delay is too long when it comes to drugs at 7.30 pm they turn up.

So me 2 nurses Mizz Deedot and Iwillgotobagdad
Transport all the above , hail a Taxi the driver loads the cab and I go home.

I left the Ward with a good view off it , hard working committed Staff who keep on doing it week in week out many going home to babies children after it . They have to put up with understaffing , agency workers who have never worked on the ward , Patients and Families all near or at the end off there tether , Days when the place could not be madder . I now have two wards at Chealse & Westminster that I feel safe and looked after on.

I loved the Taxi ride back home.
