had a exposure with a undetectable male
« on: September 18, 2013, 03:16:29 pm »
i had a encounter with a male i did not know on the 11th of September. i was the bottom the first time he topped me it lasted about 1 minute the 2nd time which was about 5 mins later he topped me for about a minute or two. we used lube and he did not ejaculate in me but on my chest. i am not sure if i was bleeding or not.  we also rubbed or penis together later i found out trough a online dating site he was hiv + undetectable.  he told me the last time he checked he was undetectable was in may and was due to go back in November and that he takes his meds on time before he goes to bed.  still anyone could be lying so i can not rely on that 100%. i am just really worried and scared . how high was my risk and when can i get tested.  if i get tested after 2 weeks with a rna test and come out as negative how accurate would that be? thank you so much

Hi Latino,

Unprotected anal intercourse is high risk for HIV transmission. It is significantly more risky for the receptive partner. You can test initially at 6 weeks after the risk. If you get a negative result then it is likely you will test negative again at 3 months for a conclusive result.

You need to learn from this experience. You can have as much anal sex as you want to but you need to do it the safer way. That means whenever intercourse is involved the insertive partner is always wearing a condom. No exceptions.

The fact that you had short intervals without ejaculation is in your favor against transmission having occured. But you need to know that you are risking your life and your health when you have unprotected intercourse.

Good luck with your tests and keep us posted.

HIV is hard to transmit relative to other STDs, and there is absolutely NO 100% chance - or even 25% chance you will get it from a single encounter. But like pregnancy, someone gets it the first time.

Wearing a condom for penetrative anal and vaginal sex, however, gives you as close to 100% security as science will allow against HIV infection.

"Many people, especially in the gay community, turn to oral sex as a safer alternative in the age of AIDS. And with HIV rates rising, people need to remember that oral sex is safer sex. It's a reasonable alternative."

Ok so I got tested after the 2 weeks and a state city std clinic. I was part of this study where they used this new test that was recently approved by the FDA that detects antigens of hiv in 2 weeks with just a poke and a blood sample it came back negative. How accurate is that test? Also they did 3 rapids test a antibodies blood draw and a RNA test which I should get the results in a week. If my rna comes back negative are my chances good on being negative?

I would have to know the specific name of the test before I comment on the effectiveness but all the new test are highly sensitive and can be relied upon .

As far as I can tell from the information you provided the results will need to be confirmed at 3 months . It a very good sign your rapid test are negative .

JK or Andy will weigh in and possibly give you more details if they have some to provide .
