Not a beta.
You need a free hotmail, ms live or msn email acct for login in.
Or creat a free account if you don't (when prompted).

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/installation-instructions.aspx

I "think" it expires 3/2010.
Guess then you'll have to either buy it from MS, or revert back to your old OS.
I've installed it on a netbook with great results, and a friends pc that was several years old,
with only 512 memory. Worked great on that pc also.

Dual bootable.

Hey Randy, care to share what are the new features to motivate an upgrade from Vista? Thanks. I wonder why are they "giving" it free? That's so unlike Microsoft.  ???

Hmmm, yes, good point. Maybe MS is feeling the Linux (or even Mac) heat? I know quite a few who switched over to Linux and would never go back to MS. I haven't switched, because it befuddles me and believe me, I get enough befuddlement in my life as it is. ;D

I am surprised that you were able to install that with just 512 of memory ! But hey, if it works.

I"m still going to hold off for a while. Befuddled is my middle name lately !  :P      This computer that I am on, was only bought in mid December of 08. I Still have warranty on it. But I am curious about Windows 7. And I am liking Vista. it was just getting used to it !!  :) I still am experiencing a bug when posting on these forums, with IE-8
I have to put it in compatibilty mode, otherwise everything (text) jumps around, quite erratically !
IE- 8, doesn't cause that problem on the XP computer. I Also switch back and forth with Google chrome browser.

Take care-----Ray

I have been using the beta's and find win7 runs so much faster. Basically, speed is the thing here. Vista is so god awful slow. It takes 5 full minutes for my system to come ready with vista. And last to show up is internet connection. Vista is just poorly written and bloated down.

Win7 everything is ready to go as soon as the desktop pops up.
And I have a pretty powerful system quad core with 4 GB mem.

Why is Win7 free?
My theory is the release of vista was a nightmare. Vendors were not ready with drivers, expensive programs like Nero would not run under vista (until they released a new version, naturally costing more $$$), Pinnacle studio would not run under vista, and on and on.

By releasing Win7 and giving it away free (the free DOES expire 3/2010), but by giving it away free, vendors can have plenty of time to prepare, and end users can start the gripe to software vendors with programs that have issues with Win7, or need updated drivers.

So when Win7 is ready for sale, everything should be updated for the user. (my theory)
None of that WHEN ARE UPDATED DRIVERS COMING, like we seen when vista was for sale.
I remember the term VISTA READY. If it wasn’t vista ready, it didn’t work.
With Win7, most all hardware drivers installed automatically from Win7. I've even tried Nero and Pinnacle studio in Win7. They install and run fine, unlike with vista.

If you used media center, or have any HD video stuff (monitor, movies, video files), then Win7 is just the ticket. I have a 1080p video onboard on my MB, and a 20" 1080p monitor, and the Win7 themes and wallpapers look stunning. ATI has already released Win7 drivers... too.

It just seems like MS got their act together with Win7.

Plus... Win7 Media center and media player both support QuickTime as is, and in high def too.
No need to install QuickTime standalone. Very nice for media center to support HD material.

Ps..
I highly recommend trying it "IF" you have a spare pc to install it on, or of you can dual boot it on your main pc on a second hard drive. Since this Win7 release expires, I would not install it as my main OS.
Even though Im not so faint at heart and use it as my main os on my netbook and media center pc.
I can always revert back, but I realize many would not have that option or ability.
And too... ALWAYS back up your good stuff i.e. music, doc's, favorites, pictures, (yea even the porn - wouldnt want to lost THAT), contacts, everything you can not afford to lose if the worst happens.

Yo Randy,

I was almost sold by your spiel until your Ps posting that warned of the word "W7 would expire". Then I took 3 steps back. :D. I dun reckon I'd appreciate the complications that may or may not happen once W7 is sold commercially. Like some"free" software on 30 day trial, once these expire, many features dun work and I wouldn't want to be caught in a trap to "buy" to re-activate.

Good point about why W7 may be free. With Vista being a humbug, charging for W7 now within such a short gap from Vista, would invite bloodshed from those who paid for Vista.

I'll go find one of my "old" latops and play with W7. Hopefully I can cry, "It's Alive!!"  ;D

Thanks for the info Randy. Peace! ;)

Space?
I didnt really look. I think about 20 GB.
Dont quote me.
The download is an .ISO file that needs burning onto a blank DVD.
You can find free burning programs that will burn an iso file contents
onto a dvd, if you dont have burning software. I use nero.

Actually, I then take a 4gb usb flash drive and follow a proceedure
to make a bootable Win7 flash drive, and install from the flash drive, not the dvd.
Install goes a lot faster.

I just looked into the Windows website on W7 and this is what it says;

IMPORTANT:  The RC will expire on June 1, 2010. Starting on March 1, 2010, your PC will begin shutting down every two hours:o
Windows will notify you two weeks before the bi-hourly shutdowns start. To avoid interruption, you'll need to rebuild your test machine using a valid version of Windows before the software expires. You'll need to rebuild your test PC to replace the OS and reinstall all your programs and data. ??? :-\ :P

Way too much hassle for me and I haven't even befuddled yet! ;)

Hey... Its Microsoft. They HAVE to make everything a nightmare somehow.  ;)
That’s why I say to install on something other than your main pc (if you have one handy).
Then you can mess, see how you like it.
Yeah I know most don’t care unless or until they are forced to go to a different operating system.
Like in getting a new pc or notebook down the road.
Myself, its free, so why not. I like to see whats new. If its faster, better.

Hey Ann.. It sounds messy I know. That’s cause I always do things the hard way, probably.
When you DL the Win-7 file from MS, your downloaded file ends in .iso
That’s a compressed file the dvd burning software expands while burning it onto a blank dvd.
The transferring to a usb flash drive is something I do because installing from the dvd takes longer.
But most will install from the dvd they make from burning the .iso file.
With the burning software, use BURN IMAGE option, so it expands the files while burning.
