The third time's the charm
« on: June 16, 2006, 04:41:19 pm »
I went and had my blood draw today for the LTNP study.  Since I was already there we decided to do the draw for my regular tests instead of me coming back in less than 2 weeks.  So, altogether, they took 14 tubes of blood.   :P

It became very obvious to me that my NP doesn't do venipuncture very often.   ::)   She ended up sticking me three times before she got a good flow going.  The first two only gave her a trickle even though they are good veins.  As she proceeded to do the first she explained to me she normally doesn't like to stick the vein she was doing because of the nerve that lies behind it.  She said you can't tell if you hit it or not but if you do it can make you feel nauseous and faint.  Well, needless to say... she hit it.  I started getting a bit queasy.  Then nauseous.  Then I started getting clammy.  I had to lie down.   :P   She said it was the same nerve as the 'funny bone'.  I didn't find it very humorous.  :-\

She tried a second vein but it didn't want to cooperate so she decided to wait a bit and do her other stuff; poking and prodding and listening to my innards; then she went for the back of the hand.  BINGO!  By then I felt alright again so it was no biggie.  She was afraid it wouldn't last long enough to get all the tubes but it held out.

Now I can only imagine what my poor arm is gonna look like in a day or two.   :-\

That was my adventure for the day.    ;) :D

What a day you've had  :(

I hate when they don't seem to know how to draw blood. My husband will avoid this one nurse every time we go to the lab.

Relax tonight and enjoy your weekend ;D

With allthe track marks you are gonna have, people will think you are dating Kate Moss :)

LOL, Jonathan   :D

Nadine, I was about ready to tell her to go get one of the nurses to do it.  A couple of them are really good at it.  The best is at my PCP's office.  She can stick you and be done and you don't even know it.  :o

Ted...Believe me when I tell you I can relate.  And I've heard the same thing about the nerve but lucky for
me she missed it.  I just did labs last Monday and she stuck me a total of seven times before she finally found
a bleeder in my hand.  Yes...she used a butterfly.  My veins are so bad...so many knots from previous "intraveneous
activities" and of course they roll so bad.  They keep threatening to go into my foot but so far we've always
managed to find one (So Far)  Sorry to hear about your misadventure at the clinic... :P

I can relate...

Having lived in a Title II jurisdiction where good help is hard to find, I had noticed over the years that certain nurses were afraid to draw blood.  One of those aforementioned nurses whose name will be forever confidential exploded one of my veins (or at least it made a very loud pop).  Ordinarily, I would go ballistic but the Case Manager (also a nurse) and one of my close friends happened to be in the room visiting with me at the time so, I pretended it happens all the time.

I did ask an RN about track marks once because I have been a pin cushion at Clinica De Blood for almost 12 years and don't have any marks.  I had made a comparison to a guy I knew who was a Heroin addict and has little volcanoes on his arms.  The answer was simple, frequency of injections.  Have the best day
Michael

My motto is if they miss the first time then I'm outta there!
They have to wait two weeks and I'll find another "vampire" who knows what they are doing .
I aso informed my doc of this and he backs me all the way.
BTW if you go to the hospital to visit your vampire and they miss the veins all you do it notify the sign in desk and you are not charged for their mistakes.

I am not their pin cushion for the day and they are not allowed to practice on me.  >:(

BIG DITTO!

I've only had to ask once, but I wouldn't hesitate to ask again.

I have good veins.  They're easy to see and real "gushers".  If you can't hit it on the first try, you don't get another shot at it.  End of story.

Gee, I've never had a nurse or NP draw blood.  It's always one of the phlebotomists at the lab - and they are very, very good.

Same here.  Some are so good that sometimes I really can't tell they're doing anything.  I had blood taken at the Health Dept once and it was horrible.  I have nice, big, juicy veins and this lady just jabbed that needle in my arm.  It made a pop and felt like she hit something (a nerve?) in there.  I almost hit at her as a reaction/ reflex 'cause it hurt like hell.  My partner was there and was really surprised how she did that.  A large part of my arm was bruised from that lady.
