One in four AIDS victims in Kentucky is female

One in four AIDS victims in Kentucky is female
ASSOCIATED PRESS
LOUISVILLE - Hundreds of women in Kentucky are living with AIDS, and females account for nearly one-fourth of Kentuckians diagnosed each year with the disease.

Vicki Johnson, an AIDS coordinator for the Kentucky Department for Public Health, said some people still think AIDS is a disease of gay men.

"Well, it's not," she said.

But among women, the disease can be such a strong stigma that they often tell others they have cancer or seek care from out-of-town doctors.

State public health officials said they are just beginning to respond to AIDS among women with initiatives such as a program designed to help black women engage in healthy sexual relationships.

The proportion of new AIDS cases among women rose from none in 1982 to a high of 24 percent in 2003, and was 21 percent in 2004. More than 400 Kentucky women are living with AIDS, and many others are HIV-positive. Black women are hardest-hit, with an AIDS rate 19 times higher than white women.

Critics say not enough has been done in Kentucky to prevent AIDS.

"You look at San Francisco, New York," said Tina Haley, director of HIV prevention and case management services at Volunteers of America of Kentucky. "They have a lot of billboards, a lot of programs. It's very public."

Kentucky has $1 million for HIV prevention, but plans to develop a state media campaign educating women about AIDS fell through, Johnson said.

"We can do much better, and I think we're going to be doing that in the near future." Johnson said. "Unfortunately, it's going to come down to funding."

Among Kentucky women, sexual intercourse with men is by far the most common way the virus is passed. AIDS experts said women who don't know the facts often don't take precautions, such as insisting on use of condoms during sex.

Patty Chinn, of Newport, has lived with the disease for two decades. Chinn, 40, said family members often ignore her pleas to use condoms.

"It amazes me," she said. "I'm staring you in the face, and you're still going out having unprotected sex."

Experts said black women face more risks than white women for several reasons. They are more likely to contract the disease through intravenous drug use or have black, male partners who are more likely than white men to have been in prison, where AIDS rates are high.

Black women are also more likely than white women to be poor and lack access to health care. So it may take longer for them to get tested for HIV. Studies have shown that one-third of people with HIV are in care, one-third know they are positive but are not in care and one-third have never been tested.

"If you don't know you have it, you don't know you're putting others at risk," said Larry Palmer, head of urban health policy at the University of Louisville. "Then it's just passed on."

Welcome to the party. North Carolina's numbers are about the same, as well as the poor education, and too little resources. I live in a fair sized city, and when I began my search for an ASO a couple of years ago I found Rochelle. One person who has a satellite office here in town from the main office in another town 20+ miles away. Things have gotten a smidgen better, but I was gobsmacked(thanks Ann) by the lack of resources, and the fact that the few that were in place, were pretty hard to find.
We now have a pretty nice ASO office that offers more.
But.....we still have the shittiest ADAP program in the country.

Are they lumping in being HIV+ with AIDS?

I was told that, in our area of NC, that the majority of new HIV and syphilis cases are gay men.  I guess it depends on the concentration of gays in any given area.

David

Edited to add... Lisa, my hubby got lucky with ADAP.  He was initially told that there was a waiting list of something like 186 people, but the next thing you know, he's on it, getting bloodwork done regularly and supplied with Atripla.  I've heard bad stories of others in NC and SC especially.  Maybe it just depends on how clued-in the person working with you is.

David......
I didn't have any problems getting ADAP, what I am saying is that the list of meds is one of the most restrictive of any I have witnessed.
HIV drugs, antibiotics, antifungals, phenergan, elavil and maybe one or two minor others PERIOD.
What about all of the people on ADAP suffering from depression (as do I) and cannot afford any other antidepressant meds(as I can't)? I should be on three other meds, but I can't get them, and they aren't on our ADAP list. It just sucks donkey thingys!!
I want to get in on participating as a participant/advisor on the ADAP board for the state. I got invited to sit on the housing board, and that is good, but we need better med coverage, and the state assembly keeps whittling away the ADAP budget every year.

......steps away from the soapbox........

Go for it.  You'd be great at it and many folks in NC would benefit from it.   ;)
